'Black Swan,' Natalie Portman Nab Independent Spirit Awards

James Franco wins Best Actor for '127 Hours.'
By Shawn Adler

The day might have started out mildly overcast, but as the film community watched in anticipation, the Santa Monica beach quickly went from partly cloudy to completely black, as "Black Swan" swept the major honors on its way to dominating the Independent Spirit Awards on Saturday (February 26).

A schizophrenic thriller about a ballerina's inner demons made manifest, "Black Swan" danced away with four awards, winning Best Feature, Best Director for Darren Aronofsky, Best Actress for Natalie Portman and Best Cinematography for Matthew Libatique. The flick is nominated in the same four categories at Sunday's Academy Awards.

Among other winners, the rural drama "Winter's Bone" nabbed two awards: Best Supporting Male for John Hawkes and Best Supporting Female for Dale Dickey. Presumptive Oscar Best Picture favorite "The King's Speech," meanwhile, won Best Foreign Film.

James Franco, who played a man who literally had to give up an arm to be here today, finally got his due, winning Best Actor for his performance in Danny Boyle's "127 Hours." The 32-year-old, who is in nearly every moment of the film as the camera focuses on his character's struggle to make a nearly unthinkable sacrifice, will be front and center as co-host of the Academy Awards.

Other winners included "The Kids are All Right" for Best Screenplay, "Get Low" for Best First Feature and "Exit Through the Gift Shop" for Best Documentary. Thierry Guetta, aka "Mr. Brainwash," accepted the award for "Exit" on behalf of the film's reclusive director, Banksy.

Hosted by Joel McHale, the show honored independent and original filmmaking throughout 2010, moving from last year's venue, the downtown L.A. Live complex, back to the beach in Santa Monica.

Will it be a regal evening for "The King's Speech"? Can "The Social Network" dial up Oscar gold? Don't miss MTV News' "2011 Oscars Live" at 6 p.m. Sunday, February 27, when we'll be chatting with your favorite Hollywood stars live from the red carpet on MTVNews.com, and stick with us all Oscar night for winners, interviews, photos and more!

Oscar Preview: Can 'King's Speech' Be Dethroned?

The period drama seems poised to take the Best Picture crown once promised to 'The Social Network.'
By Eric Ditzian

Colin Firth in "The King's Speech"
Photo: Weinstein Company

If the 83rd Academy Awards had been held a month ago, shortly after the critics groups had doled out their prizes and the final glasses of champagne had been drained at the Golden Globes, "The Social Network" would almost certainly have nabbed Oscar's Best Picture statue. After all, David Fincher's film about the salacious founding of Facebook hardly encountered a critics group it didn't woo and win over, before going on to earn four Globes, including Best Motion Picture - Drama. What could possibly stand between "Social Network" and the Academy's top honor?

As it turns out, another month. And another biopic, this one telling a story that begins some 80 years ago and resembling a far more traditional Oscar film than Fincher's exploration of youth and digital beauty. "The King's Speech" bounced back from its Globe defeats (it nabbed just one of seven nominations, with Colin Firth taking top dramatic actor) and secured important wins from the Producers Guild of America, the Directors Guild of America and the Screen Actors Guild.

So much for creating a big tent with the inclusion of 10 Best Picture nominees. Like last year, we find ourselves watching a two-horse race that, at this point, might not be all that close. Kudos to "Toy Story 3," "Winter's Bone" and "Inception," but their nominations are kind of the equivalent of pity invites to a kid's birthday party: Sure, the birthday boy was forced to request the pleasure of your company, but he's not going to pretend you're anything more than a seat-filler. Our man Oscar holds the most exclusive birthday party in Hollywood, and its voters like it that way.

What's interesting this year is the nature of the two-horse race. In 2010, it came down to a decision between a populist fave in "Avatar" that made a gazillion dollars at the box office and a critics' darling in "The Hurt Locker" that maybe six people saw in the theater. Both "Social Network" and "King's Speech," meanwhile, have almost identical box-office grosses and high-90s ratings at the Rotten Tomatoes review aggregator. The difference between the two is that "King's Speech" is the kind of film that could have been an Oscar nominee a decade ago — or a half-century ago — whereas "Social Network," in everything from story line to subtext to soundtrack, is directly plugged into 2011.

That's not to suggest "King's Speech" is some musty relic of yesteryear, nor that contemporary relevancy is a requirement for Oscar glory. The key, rather, is that the best film should win. And if you ask us, the finest film of the year is "Social Network." But as in so many years past — from how "Gladiator" bested "Traffic" to the way "Shakespeare in Love" beat out, well, geez, take your pick! — the best film of the year doesn't always receive that Oscar honor.

We can talk about momentum, we can indentify vital precursor wins, we can cite all manner of historical facts and we can lament fuddy-duddy voters. None of it seems to matter. On Sunday night, it appears, a very good film but hardly the year's best will win Best Picture. Let's offer our early congratulations to "The King's Speech."

Which Oscar contender should take Best Picture? Share your pick in the comments!

Will it be a regal evening for "The King's Speech"? Can "The Social Network" dial up Oscar gold? Rachel Zevita Gets Second Chance In 'American Idol' Top 24

While she couldn't get past Hollywood Week in season six, she sailed all the way to the live shows this year.
By Kara Warner

After weeks of audition rounds and an always grueling and drama-filled Hollywood Week, the field of 327 "American Idol" contestants was narrowed to 24 on Wednesday and Thursday (February 24). Although many fans are still reeling from the unexpected ouster of presumed front-runner Chris Medina, many of the early fan favorites received the happy news that they made it through to the coveted top 24.

One of the lucky 2 dozen is "Idol" repeat hopeful Rachel Zevita, a 21-year-old New Yorker who first made her mark in the show's colorful history books back in season six. Zevita started her season 10 journey during the audition rounds with a performance of Leonard Cohen's "Hallelujah," which didn't exactly wow the judges, but with support from Jennifer Lopez -- who told Zevita that she believed she could do better -- the young opera singer made it through to Hollywood once again and fought her way into the top 24 with impressive performances during Hollywood Week, including her version of the Beatles' "Eleanor Rigby."

Joining Zevita to receive her big news were her mother and 83-year-old grandmother, who flew in all the way from New York. Naturally, Ryan Seacrest couldn't resist flirting a bit with dear old grandma, possibly trying to ease the tension surrounding her granddaughter's big will-she-or-won't-she-make-it moment.

Zevita met the judges dressed in a slightly quirky ensemble of almost all black, complete with a tiny silver tie and feathers on her shoes, which prompted Steven Tyler to ask if she could fly.

"I hope so," Zevita answered nervously.

The judges then spent a few nerve-racking minutes addressing a few things Zevita needs to work on, including finding herself, wanting to see her true spark, etc. Finally, Zevita heard the good news that she was in. Her reaction was total disbelief.

"I can't thank you enough. I can't believe it!" she said, with tears starting to pool in her eyes. "I did it!" she exclaimed as she walked out of the room to greet her family.

"They want all of me!" she told them, and everyone enjoyed a warm group hug.

Get your "Idol" fix on MTV News' "American Idol" page, where you'll find all the latest news, interviews and opinions.

Justin Bieber 'Real Hairstyle' Dolls Keep Swoop Alive

We hit a New York toy fair for scoop on the latest dolls, including a first look at an mp3-equipped, purple Bieber tour bus.
By Aly Semigran, with reporting by Brian Jacks

Photo: MTV News

If you're still mourning the loss of Justin Bieber's luscious locks, there's some news that could very well perk you up (and, no, it hasn't grown back yet). Just days before the "Never Say Never" star chopped off his trademark coif, toy company Bridge Direct debuted Justin Bieber "Real Hairstyle" dolls at the American International Toy Fair in New York.

MTV News caught up with George Vorkas of Bridge Direct, who give us the rundown on everything fans can expect from the doll, whose retail price is set at $17.99 and is slated to hit shelves this August.

After the company received complaints about their first Bieber model, which featured plastic hair, Vorkas and his associates gave the 2011 model "real" hair.

"This year, we have Justin with hair. Every girl at home can now play with his hair and style it the way they want," Vorkas explained.

In addition to styling their toy Biebs — like the original, it "sings," only this time newer hits like "U Smile" and "Never Say Never" have been added — fans can also put him on the road. The company has created a purple (naturally) Bieber tour bus, complete with a functioning mp3 player dock and a stage setup that includes guitar, drums, keyboard and the heart-shaped cage he featured on his most recent tour.

"As Justin does new things with his stage sets, we'll be coming out with matching toys," Vorkas assured us. (The stage sets and tour bus will go for a whopping $79.99.)

And that's not the only way the company plans to evolve with the ever-changing pop phenom. While the 2011 doll features a variety of Bieber-inspired accessories and outfits, collectors and/or purse string-opening parents can also expect ever-changing fashions from the "Baby" singer. As Vorkas told MTV News, "When Justin changes into a new outfit, we'll also be coming out with that outfit."

Will you buy the "real hairstyle" Justin Bieber doll? Tell us in the comments!

Justin Bieber's Haircut: Fans Weigh In!

While many Beliebers are gushing over his 'sexy,' 'older' cut, others tell MTV News they miss his signature 'swoop.'
By Jocelyn Vena

Justin Bieber
Photo: George Pimentel/ WireImage

This week Justin Bieber made headlines thanks to a new haircut. The Biebs had his famous swooping bangs cut into a shorter, cropped look, and he told talk-show host Ellen DeGeneres he doesn't "really care" what people have to say about his 'do.

But his fans have been weighing in on the new hairstyle anyway, and many of them approve of the haircut.

"I really like it and it actually makes him look older!!!! And for all u down there hating on Bieber well if it was Angelina Jolie I'm sure you'd have something to say so don't hate 'cause he's sexy and he ain't even legal yet," Amanda wrote on MTV.com.

Lilia added, "AAh, he looks better with the new hair! Suits him!"

Beliebers have been debating the star's latest look since he debuted it earlier this week. Coote noted on our site that Bieber is much more than a head of hair. "I think he [looks] sexy ... i don't love him for his hair... i love him because he is sweet, cute and perfect," Coote wrote.

MTV News also took to the streets of New York City to see whether people preferred the "Never Say Never" star's old look or the new one.

"I like it, I think it looks good on him," Catherine said of Bieber's longtime haircut. She added about the brand-new cut: "I like it better than the other one, but I think that a lot of his fans liked the [old] one. ... Everyone loves him for his hair and now he doesn't have it anymore."

Meanwhile, Tiffany loved the original but was blown away by the new version. "I think it's very Bieberish, I like that long swoop. It definitely works for him," Tiffany said before we showed her the updated look. "Oh my god! It's such a transformation! I just love it! He looks so much older!"

"It's just beautiful," Christina explained of the old 'do. "I liked him with his longer hair better. That's just who he was discovered as."

"He looks a little geeky," Sofia said of his famous original hairdo. "It's much better," she said of the cropped cut. "He doesn't look like my brother anymore. He looks five years older. He's so cute."

Which do you prefer: Bieber's long locks or his cropped cut? Tell us in the comments!

Kobe Bryant Talks Recruiting Kanye West For Nike Film

'He's the first person I thought of,' NBA All-Star MVP tells MTV News of tapping 'Ye for 'Black Mamba' ad.
By Alvin Blanco

Kobe Bryant in "The Black Mamba"
Photo: Nike

NBA legend-in-the-making Kobe Bryant's nickname is the Black Mamba, so a movie based on that tag was probably inevitable. Bryant, Nike and director Robert Rodriguez created a short film titled "The Black Mamba" that serves as an ad for his latest signature shoe, the Nike Zoom Kobe VI. The four-time NBA All-Star MVP spoke to MTV News about the spot and getting Kanye West onboard.

"Well, it was just us talking," Bryant told us of recruiting 'Ye, during All-Star weekend. "We've known each other for quite some time, so when the idea came up to do a spot like this, he's the first person I thought of."

Besides Bryant and West, actors Bruce Willis and Danny Trejo also make appearances in the six-minute spot. Nike previewed the short film at NBA All-Star Weekend festivities on Friday night at the W Hotel in Hollywood before officially debuting it online the next day. After the film was shown at the W, West hit the stage and performed his verse from "H.A.M." (from his upcoming Watch the Throne project with Jay-Z) to a crowd that included LeBron James and Amar'e Stoudemire.

"It was incredible," Bryant said of Yeezy's performance. "It just put a cap on the whole night. We aired the spot and then brought him out to perform and it kind of just took it over the top."

Bryant and West were in the same building again on Sunday afternoon for the NBA All-Star Game at the Staples Center, where Kobe went off in front of his hometown crowd for 37 points and 14 rebounds, earning him his fourth All-Star Game MVP trophy. Meanwhile, West hit the stage at halftime, closing out Rihanna's set with a performance of "All of the Lights" from his platinum My Beautiful Dark Twisted Fantasy.

Later that evening, the LA Lakers guard added to his trophy case as he accepted a "He Got Game" statue at the Cartoon Network Hall of Game Awards. Bryant was recently seen reminiscing about his pre-NBA years on an episode of MTV's "When I Was 17" that aired earlier this month.

Preview Avril Lavigne's Goodbye Lullaby Album - Snippets Of All Tracks

We are still two weeks away from Avril Lavigne's fourth studio album Goodbye Lullaby hitting stores. However, you can now hear preview snippets from all of the songs on the new collection. As would fit Avril Lavigne's comment that it is a more personal album, many of the songs are reflective and somewhat downbeat. However, the hooks are not absent, and songs like "Smile" and "Stop Standing There" leave us eager to hear more. It is also great fun to hear Avril Lavigne rocking out on a cover of Joan Jett's classic "Bad Reputation." All three of Avril Lavigne's previous studio albums have been certified platinum, and the last two reached #1 on the album chart. In addition she has nine top 40 pop hit singles to her credit. Goodbye Lullaby hits stores in the US March 8, 2011.

Jay-Z, LeBron James Attend 'Two Kings' Charity Event In L.A.

The stars were on hand for the unveiling of a new gym at the Boys & Girls Club of Los Angeles on Saturday.
By Steven Roberts, with reporting by Rahman Dukes

LOS ANGELES — On Saturday afternoon, many of the kids at the Boys & Girls Club of Los Angeles had the opportunity to meet and greet Jay-Z and NBA superstar LeBron James. More importantly, however, those same children will now be able to enjoy a completely renovated gym featuring a mural by esteemed artist and L.A. native Mr. Cartoon — and, hopefully, received some added inspiration to achieve their dreams — thanks to Jay and LeBron's Two Kings charity and its co-sponsor, the Coca-Cola Company's Sprite brand.

The renovation was the first under Coca-Cola's Sprite Spark Parks Project, which plans to completely renovate more than 100 neighborhood spaces, including parks, fields and basketball courts.

MTV News caught up with the rap icon and the basketball superstar at the gym's unveiling, which was held in conjunction with the NBA All-Star Weekend. Jay said he and James continue to give back because they were once just like those children in the room.

"We are those kids that didn't have those opportunities, and luckily lightning struck for us," explained Jay. "We happened to be in the right place at the right time, with God-given talent. ... Some other people need help and opportunity, so it's empathy. I am you. I've been in the same place that these kids have been."

Jay said the Two Kings charity started out because he and James wanted to utilize the financial clout of some of the people with whom they were doing business. They wanted to be more than paid endorsers smiling with a soft-drink can. They wanted to use their opportunities to achieve something positive.

"We wanted to take this relationship and do some good," maintained Jay. "Take all these people and put them in a room. Take their power and influence and use them, but use them in a good way to effect good all over."

This is the third consecutive year that Jay-Z and James' charity has hosted such an event during NBA All-Star Weekend. Britney Spears' 'Hold It Against Me' Video: A Pop-Culture Cheat Sheet

From Greek mythology to mid-'90s Tool albums, Brit's latest is full of blink-and-you'll-miss-it moments.
By James Montgomery

Britney Spears fights herself in "Hold It Against Me"
Photo: Jive

On Thursday night, after weeks of teasing, Britney Spears finally revealed her video for "Hold It Against Me," a whirling, swirling dance explosion that features plenty of sass, swagger and exactly one flowing white gown.

The Jonas Åkerlund-directed clip also features plenty of nods to pop music's past — not to mention several blink-and-you'd-miss-it odes to film, TV and, of course, Greek mythology. As is the case with all massive videos, there's a whole lot to keep track of, so, much like we did for equally big clips like Lady Gaga's "Telephone" and My Chemical Romance's "Na Na Na," we've put "Hold It Against Me" through the wringer and compiled a pop-culture cheat sheet that's alphabetized and cross-referenced for your convenience. Believe us, this took way longer than you could imagine, but it was worth it. (Oh, and despite our best efforts, we're sure there's something we missed, which is why we need your help: Let us know what you spot in the comments below.)

Photos of the references in Britney's "Hold It Against Me."

The Graeae: In Greek mythology, they were the three sisters who shared a single eye. In Britney's video, they're hoodie-wearing dudes with serious dance moves (and no eyes at all). Same thing, really.

Iamamiwhoami: Icky, sticky viral-video enigma whose early clips featured plenty of lying around in the fetal position (and amniotic fluids). In "HIAM," Britney, covered in similarly sticky liquid, curls up on the floor, striking a pose that would make Iamami proud.

Kanye West, "Runaway": Over-the-top 35-minute mini-movie/allegory starring West as a man who cares for a phoenix who has fallen to Earth. The meteor that crashes to Earth at the beginning of "HIAM" reminds us a lot of the phoenix's fiery entrance in 'Ye's film. And, if you look hard enough, you can also see the song's lyrics printed out in the top left corner of the shot.

Madonna, "Bedtime Stories": Ultra-artistic 1995 video, directed by Mark Romanek, that cost a reported $5 million to make. From the futuristic set and the special effects to Brit's long, flowing gown and whirling dancers, it appears to be a direct influence on pretty much everything in "HIAM." Though we're willing to bet Brit didn't spend nearly as much to make her version.

Madonna, "Die Another Day": Big-budget 2002 Madonna video from the equally big-budget James Bond film of the same name. It featured a memorable fight scene that pitted Madge against her alter ego (Mariah Carey did the same thing in her "Heartbreaker" video, BTW). In "HIAM," Britney battles her alter ego in a (very fashionable) kung fu fight.

"The Matrix": Wachowski brothers franchise that featured plenty of TV screens and a whole lot of marauding machinery, just like "HIAM." Like Keanu said, "Whoa."

"Mortal Kombat": Totally awesome (and violent) fighting game that featured, among its cast of characters, a blue-garbed assassin named Sub-Zero. In "HIAM," Britney's dancers don outfits similar to him, only they don't shoot ice out of their hands. Unless that part's in the director's cut.

Robyn, "Indestructible": Sexy 2010 video from Sweden's sexiest pop export, it featured Robyn writhing on a table while wearing a dress made entirely of clear plastic tubes (courtesy of Australian artist Lucy McRae), sort of like the ones Britney uses to spray colored liquid all over the "HIAM" set.

"The Rocky Horror Picture Show": Cult 1975 film adapted from a British play, its iconic poster featured a pair of bright-red lips, which seem to have also made their way into "HIAM."

Tool, Ænema: Totally excellent 1996 album that featured several covers, one of which was a creepy, double-irised eyeball, courtesy of artist Cam de Leon. If you blink (get it?!?), you might miss a similar eyeball that pops up in "HIAM."

What did we miss? Share the pop-culture inspirations you spotted in the comments below!

Liam Neeson As Hollywood's Newest Badass: 'Unknown' Co-Stars Explain

Diane Kruger and January Jones say actor's 'body of work and gravitas as an actor' add a new layer to action films.
By Shawn Adler, with reporting by Kara Warner

Diane Kruger and January Jones
Photo: MTV News

He may have broken in with roles in sword-and-sorcery flicks like "Excalibur" and "Krull," but how in the world did the Oscar-nominated man best known for his quiet, dramatic work in films like "Schindler's List," "Nell" and "Kinsey" suddenly become film's most believable, in-demand 60-year-old badass?

It's precisely because of his previous work, "Unknown" co-stars Diane Kruger and January Jones insisted to MTV News.

"I wanted to be in this movie because of Liam really," Kruger said. "Especially this kind of film. ... I think because of his age and because of his body of work and his gravitas as an actor, I think it brings a whole other layer of depth to this kind of film. It feels fresh. It feels like, yes, it's entertaining and it's light, but there's a whole other layer of emotions and character work going on."

Two years after Neeson rocked audiences as a super-talented assassin out to save his daughter in "Taken," the Irish thesp is back to kick butt and take names in "Unknown," a neo-Hitchcockian thriller about a man bereft of an identity after a car accident leaves him unsure of who he really is. While unquestionably dangerous and capable, here Neeson also has to play fragile and flustered.

It's a dichotomy that doesn't just show up in his film roles, January Jones argued, but in the man himself.

"He's such a perfect casting choice for this movie, because you could be intimidated by him physically because he is fit and could cause you harm," the future Emma Frost told MTV News. "But at the same time there's something so vulnerable about him in certain things he says and certain things he does that makes you want to take care of him, there's both sides of that. You could believe that he could be a bad guy, but you could also want him to succeed."

Check out everything we've got on "Unknown."

Christina Aguilera, Jennifer Hudson Top Grammy Performer Poll

Fans can't wait for their Aretha Franklin tribute, with Lady Gaga and Eminem's performances the next most anticipated.
By Kyle Anderson

The 53rd annual Grammy Awards are almost here, and while the hardware tends to be the main event, the roster of performers is one of the most star-studded and high-profile in the show's history. Eminem, Dr. Dre, Cee Lo Green, Lady Gaga, Rihanna, Drake, Arcade Fire, Justin Bieber, Christina Aguilera, Jennifer Hudson, Katy Perry, Muse, B.o.B, Usher, Bob Dylan and Bruno Mars are among the heavy hitters who will be taking the stage Sunday at the Staples Center in Los Angeles.

But which performance is creating the most buzz among fans tuning in to watch the show? Earlier this week, the MTV Newsroom blog posed just such a question, and the results are now in.

As soon as voting began, the competition became a war of attrition between supporters of Lady Gaga and hard-core devotees of Eminem. But once the producers announced that there would be a tribute to Aretha Franklin led by Christina Aguilera and Jennifer Hudson, the competition suddenly morphed into a three-way dance.

After hundreds of thousands of votes were cast, the Aretha Franklin tribute (also featuring Florence Welch, Martina McBride and Yolanda Adams) finished in first place with 45 percent of the total vote. It's a pretty impressive finish, especially considering that the performance wasn't announced until after voting began.

Lady Gaga ended up in second place with 23 percent, with Eminem just behind her with 20 percent. Perhaps fueled by the buzz over the release of "Never Say Never," Justin Bieber made a late run and managed to cobble together 9 percent. Katy Perry was the only other Grammy performer to pick up more than a single percentage point, and poor Miranda Lambert ended up bringing up the rear.

All of Sunday night's Grammy performances promise to be electric, but fans can barely contain themselves for Christina Aguilera, Lady Gaga and Eminem.

Don't miss "Snooki & Sway: Live From the Grammys," a red-carpet live stream kicking off Sunday at 6 p.m. ET on MTV.com. And stick with us all Grammy night for coverage of the red carpet, the show, the afterparties and beyond!

Egyptian Activist Asks American Youth To 'Share This Moment Of Glory'

Student expresses happiness to MTV's Act blog but also concern about what's next after President Hosni Mubarak's ouster.
By Mawuse Ziegbe, with reporting by Alexandria Bradshaw

After 18 days of protests and violent clashes, controversial Egyptian president Hosni Mubarak stepped down on Friday (February 11) and handed over power to the military amid citizens' headline-making calls for his departure. Protesters are now celebrating in the streets following the end of a three-decade tenure that has been criticized as widely corrupt, and many Egyptians are looking forward to swapping out the dictatorship for democratic rule.

MTV's politically oriented blog Act checked in with an activist on the ground, Ahmed Zidan, a 23-year-old medical student at Cairo University and editor of the website Mideast Youth, who conceded that while the change is exhilarating, he's concerned about what lies ahead for the North African nation.

"Well I'm worried a little bit. This moment is much far bigger than to judge it now. I mean, we should wait until the next days, maybe months, to see what will go on. It's a little bit early to comment. But I have my worries. I'm worried about the Peace Treaty with Israel, because it's not very popular in Egypt, and this might cause a lot of troubles to us, and to Israel too. I support peace, and I'm looking forward to continue this treaty," he explained. In addition to fearing continued looting and vandalism among the country's 80 million people, Zidan added that he's concerned about the influence of a popular Islamist political organization. "I'm worried too about the Muslim Brotherhood lure. They're [looking] for any frontline posts in the country, and a group with a terrorist past can do a lot of harm too," he added.

The uprising picked up momentum over two weeks ago as a series of longstanding factors including widespread poverty and unemployment and catalysts such as the recent revolt in nearby Tunisia prompted unrest in the Arab nation. The revolution has been especially notable as it was driven by young, technologically savvy Egyptians — 30-year-old Google executive Wael Ghonim who mobilized protesters via Facebook has been credited in part for galvanizing the young supporters — and Zidan added that the country's youthful Web community has long been a significant outlet for political expression.

"Facebook is very popular here. Pre-Facebook, we have blogs, post-Facebook, there's Twitter," Zidan said. "Along these years, Egyptian Netizens were expressing all their aspirations on the Internet because the political arena was limited to the ruling party and other fragile parties ratified by the ruling party. So, generally, the political life was very dull and limited. They decide for you everything: from your president to your frame of 'freedom.' So this parental state, here in Egypt and all over the region, has created a turmoil on the Internet life. Cyber-dissidents are [working] a lot, writing, sharing news, and expressing their opinions freely, increasing awareness of the mainstream from the Internet users. But I'm talking about the roots of these protests. It's an awareness over the Internet: opinion articles, open free media, and crowd participation. They were doing online what they actually lack in their daily lives."

Zidan mused that "Wael Ghonim's page is just a co-factor [in the revolt]. It was the sperm, among millions, which penetrated the ovum of the revolution," adding that the rhetoric of opposition leader Mohammad Elbaradei and the beating death of 28-year-old Khaled Said by police also helped electrify demonstrators. While the revolt has played out in city squares and Web forums, Zidan said Egypt's laws must be overhauled as the Arab country heads into its next phase.

"We should have a powerful constitution, a secular and powerful one. At this moment, when we have a powerful constitution and law, it'll be up for the people, because the presidential terms would be limited to two," he said. "The emergency state will be lifted, the SSI — State Security Intelligence — would cease to exist, and SSI have a terrible past," he said. "The freedom of speech, freedom of Internet, freedom of expression, freedom of protest, freedom of access will be guaranteed by the new constitution. I'll not be scared if all these changes are guaranteed. I'll not be scared about whoever rules because rule of law will be the reference — not the regime, or the police, or the president."

As Egypt navigates this critical period of transition, Zidan said that young Stateside supporters can help out as well by engaging their Middle Eastern counterparts via the Web — the same medium that helped kick off the swift revolution.

"You can circulate our articles, visit our websites, react with us! I mean, the youthful spirit is very important. The Internet spirit, this solidarity. I've received e-mails and tweets from all over the world in the past four hours congratulating me. I mean, let's share this moment of glory," he said, adding, "But you should pressure your regime too."

What do you think about the uprising in Egypt? Let us know in the comments.

Thor's Day Picks at SignMeTo

Each week it's my job to pick the features at SignMeTo on Thursday. This week we've got a fantastic alternative band out of Norway, a prog entry from the UK, and we throw a question out to the community in our forums.

Enjoy!

Jeremy Rosen
Director, Digital Platforms & Web Sites

Jeremy's Thor's Day Pick: Fairmount
With an unusually high A&R rating in line with the rating of the public at large, you can bet there's something good to hear in this Norwegian quartet. As I stated in my own review, it's not that I'm looking for shorter, punchy songs, but this band really delivers.

What can we do to attract more indie bands?
We threw this question out to the community a few weeks ago and want to republicize it. Obviously Roadrunner is a bastion of metal and hard rock, but we are always looking to expand our horizons in curating and popularizing quality music. SignMeTo is a good way to do this, but the indie community there is still rather small.

Skin the Pig
With some killer artwork and a strong song entry on the site, this band are worth a listen. Originally from Northern Ireland, the sextet currently make their home in Manchester, England.

'Prometheus' Has 'Definite Connection' To 'Alien,' Michael Fassbender Says

'It's definitely in keeping with the old ones,' movie's star says about confusion over the Ridley Scott film.
By Eric Ditzian, with reporting by Josh Horowitz

Michael Fassbender
Photo: MTV News

Ever since a Deadline New York report last month, there has been a lot of confusion about Ridley Scott's newest "Alien" film, which marks the director's return to the franchise more than 30 years after he brought the first "Alien" movie to the big screen.

After word of the project first broke in the summer of 2009, the new report suggested the film was in fact not an "Alien" prequel but rather a film born of "Alien DNA" that is "unique, large and provocative." Yet at the same time, contrary to this new spin, we were hearing that the film — titled "Prometheus" — was in fact a prequel to the franchise. Now, this all might be a matter of semantics (not to mention movie marketing), but there's no doubt that confusion has surrounded the exact nature of the production.

So when we had the chance to speak with one of the stars of the new film, Michael Fassbender, while he was promoting "Jane Eyre," we asked him to shed some light on these conflicting judgments. And as he told us, "Prometheus" is most definitely an "Alien" movie.

"Absolutely," he said. "There's a definite connecting vein. You realize you're part of something else. But it's definitely in keeping with the old ones."

What's more, Fassbender said the new film is more closely related to the slow-burning "Alien," which Scott directed, than James Cameron's more action-oriented follow-up, "Aliens."

"It is more sort of the original one," Fassbender explained. "There's things happening and building, and the intelligence of the first two-thirds of the film gets you ready for the action ... it's creeping, it's sinister, things are happening and building, all the different intrigues and politics going on between the different relationships onboard."

That's not to say Damon Lindelof, who worked on the script with Scott, was blowing smoke when he said things to Deadline like, "In a world flooded with prequels, sequels and reboots, I was incredibly struck by just how original Ridley's vision was for this movie."

Fassbender told us that while "Prometheus" fits squarely within "Alien" mythology, the film delivers "a whole new revelation."

Emma Watson Confirmed For 'Perks Of Being A Wallflower' Film

Actress will star opposite Logan Lerman in her first post-'Harry Potter' leading role.
By Terri Schwartz

Emma Watson

It's been nine months since Variety first announced that Emma Watson might be starring in the upcoming adaptation of Stephen Chbosky's "The Perks of Being a Wallflower," and now Watson's first post-"Harry Potter" leading role has been confirmed. Both she and Logan Lerman will headline the adaptation that Summit Entertainment recently picked up.

Watson confirmed the casting on her Facebook page, saying, "Hi everyone, I just wanted to let you know that the rumours are true - I'm going to be playing Sam in 'The Perks of Being a Wallflower' opposite Logan Lerman. Love Em xx."

Chbosky will both write and direct the film, with John Malkovich executive-producing it. "The Perks of Being a Wallflower" follows 15-year-old wallflower Charlie (Lerman) who writes a series of letters to an unknown person about his life, including his love for a girl named Sam (Watson), the suicide of his best friend and his struggle to find a group of friends in which he belongs. It is considered to be one of the best interpretations of adolescence in the 1990s out there.

"The Perks of Being a Wallflower" isn't the only film on Watson's slate. She's filmed a small but important role in the upcoming Michelle Williams-starring film "My Week With Marilyn" and is also a top contender to star opposite Taylor Lautner in the adaptation of the young-adult novel "Incarceron." There's also the last "Harry Potter" film, "Deathly Hallows: Part 2," which is scheduled to hit theaters July 15.
