Ron Howard Says 'Dilemma' 'Gay' Joke Will Remain In Film

'I believe in sensitivity but not censorship,' director tells Los Angeles Times.
By Mawuse Ziegbe

Despite the controversy stirred up by a "gay" joke in the trailer for the upcoming movie "The Dilemma," director Ron Howard has insisted the quip will stay in the film.

The drama began a few weeks ago when the flick's original preview, which features Vince Vaughn's character dubbing electric cars "gay" during a pitch meeting, landed on the Web and in theaters. The joke popped up around the same time a wave of suicides by teens who had been subjected to anti-gay harassment made headlines, and the line was later excised from the trailer.

While Howard said he understands why the joke was removed from the preview, he recently told the Los Angeles Times that the wisecrack will remain in the film.

" 'The Dilemma' is a comedy for grown-ups, not kids. It's true that the moment took on extra significance in light of some events that surrounded the release of the trailer and the studio made the decision to remove it from advertising, which I think was appropriate. I believe in sensitivity but not censorship," Howard wrote in a letter to the Times. "It is a slight moment in 'The Dilemma' meant to demonstrate an aspect of our lead character's personality, and we never expected it to represent our intentions or the point of view of the movie or those of us who made it."

Howard also explained that an aspect of Vaughn's character is his affinity for courting controversy and pushing boundaries.

"Our lead character of Ronny Valentine has a mouth that sometimes gets him into trouble and he definitely flirts with the line of what's okay to say," he said. "He tries to do what's right but sometimes falls short. Who can't relate to that? I am drawn to films that have a variety of characters with different points of view who clash, conflict and learn to live with each other. 'The Dilemma' is a story full of flawed characters whose lives are complicated by the things they say to and hide from each other. Ronny is far from perfect and he does and says some outrageous things along the way."

Vaughn has also defended the film's content in the wake of the teen suicides and subsequent public outcry.

"Let me add my voice of support to the people outraged by the bullying and persecution of people for their differences, whatever those differences may be," the actor said in a statement to E! News earlier this month. "Comedy and joking about our differences breaks tension and brings us together. Drawing divided lines over what we can and cannot joke about does exactly that; it divides us."

Rihanna Teases 'Saturday Night Live' Skit

'I'm excited to perform, but definitely excited to do another digital short,' she tells MTV News.

Last December, Rihanna appeared in an Emmy-nominated "Saturday Night Live" sketch. This week, the Loud singer will return to the "SNL" stage as the night's performer, and she promised that she will appear in another digital short.

"I'm excited, of course. We're gonna do a [sketch], definitely," she told MTV News on Thursday. "I was most looking forward to that, 'cause I really enjoyed it last time. I really enjoyed, like, the whole 'SNL' experience, so I'm excited to perform, but definitely excited to do another digital short."

For those not familiar with the sketch, Rihanna visited the school of Shy Ronnie (played by Andy Samberg) and sang the hook on Ronnie's rap song. She occasionally had to tell him, in song, to "speak up" or "I'll take it from here," because Ronnie barely gets above a whisper when he raps.

The video was just a glimpse into Rihanna's acting skills, which she will certainly display on the big screen in the upcoming "Battleship" movie. She told MTV News that her recent on-set experience has made her a better actor, which she hopes to show off Saturday night, live or in a pre-taped short.

"Acting classes as well as learning from the experience of acting and filming definitely will help, because that's all acting in those skits," she said. "So, definitely, it comes in handy."

Are you looking forward to seeing Rihanna's newfound acting skills on "SNL"? Let us know in the comments!

Diddy Says 'Young Gun' Drake Gave Him Valuable Advice

Toronto MC 'went above and beyond,' Diddy says of MC jumping on Diddy-Dirty Money track 'Loving You No More.'
By Jayson Rodriguez, with reporting by Ricky Louis

Kalenna Harper, Diddy and Dawn Richard
Photo: MTV News

According to Diddy, he had a specific plan when he mapped out Last Train to Paris.

"I wanted to be smart enough to go to the newest generation, the flyest, young gun of MCs and writers and humbly ask them for help," he told MTV News. "To be honest, a lot of cats were busy. I can respect that. But Drake took the time to stop what he was doing and he was the hottest one in the game. He came to my house for two days, we went to Canada for three days."

The result was "Loving You No More," the latest single from Diddy's Dirty Money project, Last Train. Diddy and Drake shot the video in Miami with Gil Green, and the Bad Boy Records head explained that "Loving You No More" is about losing yourself by trying to please someone else.

"[The video] is really about me being in a relationship with a young lady and you're constantly loving this person," he said. "And hoping that this day comes where they change and they love you back."

The long-delayed Last Train to Paris is set for a December 14 release and Diddy credits Drake, among others, with helping to push the project along.

"[Drake] gave me advice for records when I needed somebody else, a fresh ear and he went above and beyond," Diddy said. "I appreciate him for that. This is a big record for us because of that and because of the way he treated me and we didn't really know each other. He treated me with so much respect, so much love. And he's one of my favorite MCs, period, so working with him was dope."

What do you think of Diddy-Dirty Money's new video featuring Drake? Tell us in the comments!

Willow Smith, Kings Of Leon, More Reveal Halloween Costume Plans

Kings' Caleb and Jared Followill say they're going as Taylor Swift and Kanye West.
By MTV News staff

Willow Smith
Photo: Getty Images

Halloween is right around the corner, and since you're probably spending the last precious hours before Candy O'Clock furiously stitching flank steaks together for your Lady Gaga costume (or getting your Snooki poof just right), we figured you'd like to know that you are not alone. Some of the biggest names in music and pop culture are also working overtime to get their costumes just right ... because there truly is no night more important than Halloween.

In order to inspire you to go for greatness on Sunday night, we asked some of your favorite artists (and one mega-rich multimedia conglomerate) to tell us what they'll be dressing as for Halloween. It turns out there's not going to be a Gaga among them, but we can't help but wonder: What will Gaga be going as?

Willow Smith "I'm going to be myself, and I'm going to go around the neighborhood saying, 'Do you like Willow Smith?' And then I'm going to be like, 'Ta-daa, it's me!' "

The Kings of Leon "I'm going as Taylor Swift this year," frontman Caleb Followill laughed. "And he's going to be crying, and I'm going as Kanye West, like, running behind him yelling at him," his brother (and Kings bassist) Jared Followill added.

Jesse McCartney "[We're going as] the BBM emoticons ... the BlackBerry faces, we're all going to wear white shirts with yellow faces. It seemed like a fun idea."

Matt and Kim "This Halloween we're playing a show, we're in Albany, and we're trying to think of what we're going to be ... like, duos throughout time," Matt Johnson explained. "Last Halloween, we were opening for Weezer at [New York's] Hammerstein Ballroom, and I was Andy Warhol and she was Edie Sedgwick and, Kim, basically, her outfit consisted of her not wearing pants ... and just three songs into it, I had, like, the white wig on, and it was so hot that I took it off, and then I saw pictures afterwards, and I was just some jerk wearing a black turtleneck onstage. So we need to come up with something to top that."

Stephanie Pratt "The easiest is just to put on fake blood. And put on some fangs and be something dead. You can be a dead schoolgirl, a dead cop, anything."

Martha Stewart "Well, I have several costumes. ... I like to just do my makeup myself, I like to put in cracked-ice contact lenses, so your eyes have cracks in them. So you have white eyes with black cracks, and a little red, and then I like to draw scars on my face. We went out last year on Halloween with a friend, and a man sitting at the bar said, 'You're all dressed up for Halloween!' And I said, 'What are you talking about? I was in a terrible car accident!' "

Don't Miss Your Last Chance to Catch Dommin on Tour in 2010...

“One can hear nods to Depeche Mode, Roxy Music's Bryan Ferry, even the Doors and Elvis Presley in bits and pieces of Dommin's brooding intense rock music” – AOL Noisecreep

Los Angeles-based quartet Dommin are set to hit the road yet again, this time with likeminded hard rockers The Birthday Massacre, Black Veil Brides, and Aural Vampire.

Outburn called the album “trimmed with synth pop tinkerings” while Ultimate Guitar said “There's certainly a The Crow-like darkness to Dommin, but it’s more inviting and welcoming than it is dangerous and distant.”

Kristen Stewart's 'Welcome To The Rileys' Cheat Sheet

We tell you everything you need to know about the 'Twilight' star's gritty turn as a 16-year-old stripper in this indie flick.
By Eric Ditzian

James Gandolfini and Kristen Stewart in "Welcome to the Rileys"
Photo: Samuel Goldwyn Films

You can go with the conventional wisdom that Kristen Stewart truly arrived as a Hollywood player when "Twilight" whipped up a $70 million opening in the fall of 2008. She's gone on to star in subsequent Twi-flicks as well as mature roles in films like "The Runaways" and the upcoming "On the Road."

Or you could take something of a contrarian stance and argue Stewart began her ascent as an A-list star before "Twilight" hit theaters, when the then-18-year-old threw herself into the role of an emotionally scarred stripper in "Welcome to the Rileys," proving, to herself and others, that she had the chops, maturity and creativity to accomplish anything she wanted onscreen.

Fans and critics, however, didn't get to check out her "Rileys" work until the Sundance Film Festival this past January. Now audiences in select cities will get to take in her work, in which she plays a 16-year-old (real name Allison, working-girl name Mallory) who flees to a New Orleans strip club and meets a man (James Gandolfini) who becomes her father figure and attempts to help her pick up the pieces of her broken life.

Whether you're lucky enough to have a theater near you showing the movie or simply want to know everything there is to know about it, MTV News has got you covered with our "Welcome to the Rileys" cheat sheet.

Wait, Bella's Playing a Stripper?
The fact that Stewart was playing a stripper/prostitute flew mostly under the radar — aside from a few quotes she dropped here and there — until the first photos popped up online in late 2009. One photo showed Stewart in a string bikini top, another the actress as she cowered next to a bed

Sundance arrived the next month, and Stewart made clear audiences shouldn't characterize the film as simply one about a stripper. "[The shocking thing is] maybe that it's not, like, shocking," Stewart told us. "It's really not a stripper movie at all."

Instead, she explained, "Rileys" is best understood as a story of a girl trying to make it on her own — and lacking the skills to pull it off. KStew called it the most personal role of her career.

"It's about understanding who you're playing and you have a responsibility because you feel like you can't let them down," she told us. "[My character] really became a part of me. I haven't felt so personally involved in something."

Stewart Grows Up
Months passed without much "Rileys" news. Then in July the trailer hit the Web, showing the world a very un-Bella-like character. We then brought you a slew of new photos. As Stewart explained to us, she dove into research for the role — and almost ended up with a new job.

"One shocking thing was to find how easy it is [to flaunt your sexuality]," she explained. "Like, I went to a strip club with the director and the costume designer and it being an odd grouping of people going into a strip club in the middle of the afternoon, I was, like, straight-up offered a job."

We're glad she didn't take them up on the offer. Stewart was coming into her own, and she looked and sounded as confident as we've ever seen her when she hit the "Rileys" red carpet earlier this month.

"She's grown up. She's a woman now," "Welcome to the Rileys" director Jake Scott told us, adding that she possessed the seeds of that maturity in October '08 when production on the movie kicked off. "It was an act of courage on her part, especially when you consider she was just 18."

Check out everything we've got on "Welcome to the Rileys."

Katy Perry's 'Firework' Video Sends Empowering Message

Clip for Teenage Dream song dedicated to 'It Gets Better' campaign.
By Jocelyn Vena

Katy Perry in "Firework"
Photo: Capitol Records

Katy Perry wanted her video for "Firework" to inspire people and she even dedicated it to the "It Gets Better" campaign. On Thursday, the newly married singer debuted the inspiring clip.

The video, posted on KatyPerry.com, opens with the camera panning a European city before Perry emerges in a lavender gown, standing on a balcony singing. But this isn't just some glamorous music video. Perry is sending a message: empower yourself and embrace your inner firework.

Soon, the video is intercut with stories of people who need to find their inner firework. One story is about a boy who is upset to see his parents fighting. Another follows a young woman at a party where everyone is in their underwear, and she doesn't feel comfortable. The third story follows a cancer-stricken youth who dreamily watches television.

By the time the chorus comes in, Perry's own inner firework is erupting from her chest, and with that, everyone else begins to also find theirs. The video's first protagonist pushes his father away from his mother to protect her. We are also introduced to another set of characters: two gay youths.

Perry then walks through the city, as the girl at the party decides to join in on the fun, and another guy is bullied in an alleyway for being a magician. The two gay youths embrace their feelings for one another and kiss, the magician dazzles the bullies with his skills, and the sick kid finds solace in the night.

Soon, a party erupts, with Perry in the center of the action, belting out the song's inspiring message as fireworks explode around them all.

What did you think of the "Firework" video? Give us your review in the comments below!

'Breaking Dawn' Cast: Meet The New Faces

After the Twi-verse adds eight new castmembers, we introduce you to the relative unknowns.
By Eric Ditzian

Olga Fonda
Photo: Frazer Harrison/Getty Images

After Summit Entertainment announced eight new supporting castmembers for "Breaking Dawn," fans reacted with a collective, "Um, who?"

Yes, folks like Olga Fonda and Masami Kosaka don't exactly have the name recognition of a Kristen Stewart or a Taylor Lautner, but each new castmember comes to the Twi-verse with previous acting credits and some online video. We gathered a handy guide for Twi-hards.

Olga Fonda
This Russian model and actress has quietly been building her Hollywood résumé in recent years, with brief appearances in shows like "How I Met Your Mother" and "Entourage." This past summer she was cast in Hugh Jackman's upcoming futuristic boxing drama, "Real Steel."

"Living in Los Angeles has given me an opportunity to pursue my dreams and has been able to open the doors to unlimited possibilities," Fonda told Maine's Kennebec Journal last year.

A 2007 YouTube video showcases Fonda at Los Angeles Fashion Week: her easy smile, her accented English and her sultry moves on the runway.

"So many girls trying to be models, like, 'Oh my god, I want to be a model!' Nobody really knows the reality of it," she said. "It's a lot of hard work, but at the same time it's a lot of fun."

Amadou Ly
Born in Senegal, Ly and his personal story became well-known in 2006 when a New York Times article reported how he had been abandoned by his mother and could not board a plane to Atlanta after his East Harlem robotics team won a spot in a national competition. The exposure attracted the attention of politicians and Hollywood, and he now has a foreign student visa. He's also building his acting résumé with theater work, a small role in "Law & Order" and several short films.

Masami Kosaka
Kosaka has already shared screen time with two "Twilight" stars, thanks to one scene in "The Runaways" in which he played a Japanese journalist interviewing Stewart and Dakota Fanning's characters. The actor has uploaded his reel to YouTube, showing off not only that "Runaways" scene, but his work in "FlashForward," "What About Brian" and a low-budget action flick called "The Legend of Samurai."

Wendell Pierce
Pierce has been part of the HBO family since 2002, first starring in "The Wire" and currently in "Treme," set in New Orleans where he also lives and which he never sees accurately portrayed in movies or TV.

"Hollywood hasn't been helpful with that; if I see another movie where everyone has Cajun accents and some guy in a jester hat is dancing behind a window, I'll go crazy," he told MTV News earlier this year. "People come here and ... then they're pleasantly surprised to see how Mardi Gras is a family affair. ... [It's] not just 'Girls Gone Wild.' It's also the biggest block party in the world, where people get to meet their neighbors and celebrate with their neighbors ... on an annual basis."

Sebastiao Lemos
The floppy-haired, goateed Brazilian native has appeared in the TV series "Força-Tarefa," which literally translates to "Task Force," and a 2008 Portuguese-language short film titled "Cara e Coroa," which can be found on YouTube.

According to a Brazilian "Twilight" fan site, in the short, Lemos plays a cop with ties to organized crime.

Janelle Froehlich
Froehlich appeared in the short-lived, syndicated, bilingual drama series "Hacienda Heights," which aired on a local Los Angeles TV channel. This summer she uploaded an audition video to YouTube for an unspecified project in which she appears to play a young journalist.

Ty Olsson
Olsson has been working steadily on the big and small screen for more than a decade, and as you might expect, his mug is all over YouTube: from interview segments on local news channels to spots on TV shows like "Men in Trees." He played a real-life 9/11 victim in "Flight 93" and was last seen on the big screen in "2012."

What do you think of all these new castmembers? Who is your early favorite? Let us know in the comments!

Review: "Nickelback Get Dirty Live, And That's What Makes Their Shows So Classically 'Rock 'n' Roll"

When Nickelback brought their explosive live show to Anaheim, CA this past weekend, ARTISTdirect.com was on hand to see what was in store. From pyrotechnics to sing-alongs, the site sums up the Dark Horse World Tour saying, “Throughout their fantastic set at The Honda Center in Anaheim this past Friday, Canada's finest rock band got asses shaking across the packed arena."

Running through standouts in the set list, Artist Direct continues, "That tune about the good old days, 'Photograph', allowed Chad to take a step back and showcase just why Nickelback are the modern rock phenomenon that they are. The man can write an undeniable hit, but these songs enter bona fide timeless status live as fans chant along… Chad and Co. lit up the speakers with 'Shakin' Hands,' a stripper pole-ready anthem that immediately got the easy-on-the-eyes crowd of primarily real 'California Gurls' dancing. Katy Perry ain't got shit on Nickelback …Ultimately, Nickelback know how to put on a show with the right mix of songs, sex and swagger.”

Lloyd Banks Isn't Complaining About Not Making Hottest MCs List

' Just put me at 10 1/2,' says G-Unit member, who very nearly made the top 10.
By Hillary Crosley

Lloyd Banks
Photo: GettyImages

While MTV News' 2010 Hottest MCs in the Game list was announced last week, MCs like Lloyd Banks, who made a strong run for this year's top 10, are still weighing in.

The "Beamer, Benz or Bentley" rapper stopped by radio station Power 98 in Charlotte, North Carolina, and shared his thoughts on the ultimate decision by MTV's Hip-Hop Brain Trust.

"Just put me at 10 1/2," Banks said when asked what he'd change on the list. "What is an honorable mention? It's a lot of different things. Wayne did a terrific job of flooding the market before he went in, B.o.B is a dope artist. ... It's hard. I'm not going to complain, just put me 10 1/2."

While Banks didn't make the cut, Atlanta's Waka Flocka Flame did, and there was quite a bit of blowback from fans across the Internet regarding whether Gucci Mane's protégé deserved his spot at #8.

"I think that overall impact, he does [deserve it]," said Banks of Waka Flocka's Hottest MCs ranking. "It depends on what you're judging it on: Is it the hottest MCs or the hottest rappers? Or just hot overall [or] influence, because if you going on influence, I mean, I haven't seen any other artist out the South that's had an impact like him. His record comes on in the club and you have to go to the wall if you're not with it, so that's undeniable. The last record he had, the 'No Hands' joint, I was in the studio and I was like, 'That joint is gonna be it.'

Banks went on to draw a comparison between Flockaveli and another MC that held the mic with an intense hand.

"It's kinda like DMX, like the closest thing we have to DMX," Banks said. "That much energy and when you do that crossover record to the females, it impacts so much. I haven't seen a flaw yet."

While Lloyd Banks didn't make our top 10 Hottest MCs list, there was a serious discussion of his candidacy.

"The dudes in G-Unit have always been catching flack for 'riding 50's coattails,' and we know what 50's been going through these last two years, so for anyone to come from out that group and have any sign of success, that's a factor," MTV News' Rahman Dukes argued during the roundtable discussion. " 'Beamer, Benz or Bentley'? Let's not even talk about how much noise that caused. That was one of the records to come out of New York and spread to other regions, [including] Atlanta, Houston and Chicago. It went gold and it brought back a sense of unity to New York."

What do you think of Banks being left of the 2010 Hottest MCs list? Sound off in the comments!

DevilDriver Announce New Album Title & 2011 Release Date

DevilDriver announced today the release of their forthcoming fifth album, Beast. Beast was produced by Mark Lewis (All That Remains, Trivium, The Black Dahlia Murder) and will hit retail via longtime label Roadrunner Records on February 22, 2011.

While many bands in the modern era are already withering away by their second album and have shriveled up and died by their third, DevilDriver have proven to mutate, growing stronger, deadlier and more immortal with each successive release. Beast, which follows 2009's Pray For Villains, finds the band refusing to compromise in their mission to deliver music that will make you feel as though you were slapped upside the head with a baseball bat. The band recorded 14 songs during the Beast sessions, with 11 or 12 tracks expected to make the final cut. Some song titles are as follows: "Dead to Rights," "Hardened," "Bring The Fight (To the Floor)," "Shitlist," "Talons Out (Teeth Sharpened)," "Blur," "You Make Me Sick (Sacred Secrets)," "The Blame Game," "Coldblooded, "Crowns Of Creation" and "Lend Myself to the Night."

Frontman Dez Fafara himself dubbed the record their most "extreme" to date and even compared Beast to "driving a Buick Skylark 200 miles an hour straight to Vegas" in an exclusive studio report in this month's Revolver.

Here's what the press had to say about DevilDriver in recent months:

"DevilDriver don't have anything to prove-we can either bang out heads on their terms, or simply eat their dust." --Revolver

"These five Southern California cowboys from Hell have their six guns drawn and aimed right at the competition. They blow absolutely everyone away too." --Artist Direct

"Here, Fafara and the DevilDriver crew gut-punch the listener with a storming title track and follow with a dozen more songs that rival Slipknot and Machine Head in the groove-metal echelon." --Alternative Press

"But it's their fourth offering, Pray for Villains, that really consolidates the musicians' strengths into a cohesive, street-lethal hybrid of punishing rhythms, incisive guitar licks and penetrating melodies." --Guitar World

Methods of Mayhem Mainman: "It's Always Interesting To Me That We All Hear Music Differently"

In a recent two-part interview with Music Radar, Methods of Mayhem mainman Tommy Lee discussed the making of his band's sophomore album A Public Disservice Announcement. Lee, known for his role as Motley Crue's drummer, not only discusses collaborating with the world on this endeavor, but goes over who played drums for him as he stepped out front and strapped on a guitar. Read an excerpt of the Q&A below and go right here to read the full feature.

A Public Disservice Announcement is out now. Get your copy of the eclectic album at this location.

Do you think other bands will go down the worldwide collaboration route?

"I think so. I see other bands doing it and that's so cool because they'll get the same experience out of it that I had. I learnt a lot of things, one of them is that there's a lot of talented people out there. And as well, what a thing to give back. I can't tell you the enormous amount of emails I've had and they all said thank you for the most insane opportunity. I didn't realise until I got feedback that I gave somebody this experience. To me that feels good."

How about drumming duties on the album, where they shared?"[Black Label Society drummer] Will Hunt played on 'Fight Song'. I played on all of the other songs. If there's other drum bits they're mostly percussion parts. It's funny that when it came to drummers sending in parts I think a lot of drummers were intimidated and didn't jump on. There's way more guitar players that were jumping on board. There's one French guy who submitted some really cool drum stuff, but for the most part drummers shied away from it and thought, 'Does Tommy really need more drum parts?'"

And are you any closer to realising your dream of a rollercoaster drum riser?

"You know what, I'd like to do it with Mötley and I'm going to figure out a way to do it. I might do it with Methods. I think I've figured out a way to do it where you wouldn't have to drag a rollercoaster around the world at every show. That could be insane first of all and crazy expensive as well. I might shoot a performance video where I set the band up beneath a humongous rollercoaster and have that be part of the stage. So that's kinda of my plan and I'm going to see if I can pull that off for everybody."

Kanye West Reveals My Beautiful Dark Twisted Fantasy Details

'We got a few bonus tracks, like 'See Me Now,' 'Mama's Boy' and some bonus tracks after that,' Kanye says of forthcoming album.

Kanye West has a warning to all bootleggers, hackers and any fans who think they know what 'Ye has in store for his next LP just because of the tentative My Beautiful Dark Twisted Fantasy track list that hit the Web. West said the songs that have leaked online don't sound anything like the versions that will actually be released on the album.

When asked on Saturday which track is his favorite, West replied, "I can't say right this instant, because we're still mixing them. And we got a few bonus tracks, like 'See Me Now,' 'Mama's Boy' and some bonus tracks after that. There's like 13 or 14 songs ... maybe 'Chain Heavy' will be on there. We have to make a decision by tomorrow. So there's maybe 13 or 14 tracks, but they're way produced. Far from any bootleg, far from any hacker. A hacker, man, can't give you what I can give you once it's the whole product."'

So far, Kanye has only officially released "Power" and "Runaway," although numbers like "Monster" and "Devil in a New Dress" have seen the light of day as a part of his G.O.O.D. Friday series. "Lost in the World," however, leaked without his permission and he threatened to temporarily cancel the weekly music series as a result.

In the past, the rapper has tweaked his tracks endlessly up until the last minute before he had to turn the songs over to be pressed for distribution. For "Stronger," he reworked the drums over and over, even after a video was released featuring the track. He eventually brought in Timbaland to assist with the programming.

In 2007, T-Pain talked to MTV News about West's process and was amazed at how the producer brought material like "Good Life" to, well, life.

"All I recorded for that song was hooks," T-Pain explained. "We did five different versions [of the chorus]. And when you hear that 'And my grandmamma ain't the only [girl] calling me baby,' that was a hook. Kanye put all them hooks together and created that song. When I heard the finished version, I was like, 'This dude is a genius.' "

Which G.O.O.D. Friday tracks are you hoping to see on Fantasy? Let us know in the comments!

'Paranormal Activity 2': Five Burning Questions Answered

Director Tod Williams reveals the secrets behind the sequel's major twists.
By Eric Ditzian

Tod Williams
Photo: MTV News

On Friday, as "Paranormal Activity 2" kicked off its scream-inducing run to the #1 spot at the weekend box office, we revealed five secrets from the film's production: everything from how the plot developed to how they pulled off special effects.

But there were a few secrets that were simply too spoilery to spill then. Now, though, with "Paranormal Activity 2" having reeled in an estimated $41.5 million, we're moving ahead and answering some of the film's most burning questions (needless to say, major spoilers exist below).

How They Got the Prequel/Sequel Idea

As "Paranormal Activity 2" begins, it's very refreshing — not to mention super-freaking cool — to realize that it's taking place two months before the events of the first "PA." And, wow, it's a mind-frak to realize that the final scenes take place after the plot of the first "PA." The result is sort of a prequel/sequel hybrid.

How the heck did filmmakers come up with such an original idea? Director Tod Williams told MTV News that the prequel was always part of the plan but the sequel idea popped up during production of the film.

"There was an idea to do a prequel right away. Like everybody, I thought there's no way to make a sequel to this movie," he said. "And when I read Michael Perry's initial idea of how to approach the movie, I got really excited because that's exactly the way you have to do it. And then in terms of how it evolved to wrap around [the first movie], that came in the making. We got really excited when he discovered it, because I don't think any other movie has that structure. I'm unaware of it. There's no word for it."

Any suggestions?

"Simul-quel, maybe," Williams said.

Why They Introduce Katie That Way

Katie (Katie Featherston), of course, was one of the two main characters in "PA." Let's just say that things don't end well for her. In "PA 2," you've just started to process the idea that the story is a prequel when who arrives at the family's door? It's Katie, sister of Kristi, one of the new movie's main characters. It's a satisfying reveal and has drawn gasps from audiences, but it wasn't the filmmakers' original idea.

Rather, they had an idea to cut to a shot of Katie holding Kristi's baby, leaving audiences perplexed. Ultimately, though, they felt that reveal wouldn't be true to the spirit of the first film.

"We toyed with the idea of her coming into the nursery and tending to the baby," Williams said. "We were going to save her reveal for then and play that as, 'Is that her? That's creepy. What's going on?' And then we decided to go with this version, which is get it out right out front. ['PA' creator] Oren [Peli] has an idea that you have to be honest and straightforward with an audience, and we tried to stick to that idea."

Why They Cast Sprague Grayden as Katie's Sister

The identity of the "PA 2" cast was kept strictly under wraps in the run-up to the film's release. Only when midnight screenings began last week did we learn that Sprague Grayden ("Jericho," "24") was cast as Kristi. The role was the hardest for filmmakers to cast, and they only settled on Grayden at the last minute.

"We spent a lot of time and saw hundreds of people in L.A. We realized we had to go beyond L.A. We got actors from New York and Chicago," Williams said. "The one that was the hardest was Kristi because of everything we set up in the first film and the person had to be able to work in this kind of [improvisatory] environment and look like Katie. It really was a hard one. [Sprague] came in right when we needed her to. It was a lucky thing that happened for us."

How They Built the Scares

"PA 2" begins like something of a romantic comedy: A new family moves into a house, filming their new surroundings with a camcorder and joking around at all times. The horror elements start from next to nothing — a creepily turning mobile above the baby's crib — until they build to jump-out-of-your-seat moments.

Some viewers have argued that the scares simply don't come quickly enough, but Williams has an entirely different philosophy when it comes to frightening an audience that fell in love with the original film.

"Following up on a movie like 'Paranormal Activity,' where the expectations are very high, is tricky," he said. "Oren Peli's film was so perfectly modulated. We knew that if we went and tried to scare the pants off you in the first minute, your guard is up. We've got to get you past the point where you think you're prepared and just when you forget it's coming, that's when we come. Knowing that these movies are all about doing a lot with a little, we had to do everything very, very subtly."

Why the Movie Ends the Way It Does

In the final scenes, a now demonically possessed Katie returns to Kristi's house and kills her sister and brother-in-law. Frightening and unexpected, to say the least. Exactly how Katie committed those murders, however, changed during production. Williams said he shot a very bloody version of the murders but decided that such gore did not fit within the larger framework of the film.

"Normally you spend two years writing a screenplay and auditioning all these ideas," he explained. "We didn't have that time. But we did have a production environment that was exceedingly easy to run and operate. Every idea was auditioned in the doing of it."

Check out everything we've got on "Paranormal Activity 2."

Drake Returns To Hottest MCs In The Game List At #4!

Drizzy delivered on his debut and was a staple on radio in 2010.
By Paul Cantor

In 2009, Drake dropped the instant-classic mixtape So Far Gone (which sold upward of 70,000 units its first week when it was released as an EP last September) and appeared on songs with Jay-Z, Fabolous and Mary J. Blige, among others. He was the industry's new "it" guy, nominated for two Grammys after only a mixtape. His clout was reflected on last year's Hottest MCs in the Game list, with the MTV News Hip-Hop Brain Trust ranking him #3. What more did Aubrey Graham really have to do?

Well, for one, he needed to drop an actual album to prove he was more than just a fly-by-night sensation. He also needed to hit the road and show he was a dynamic performing artist who could fill an arena. And, finally, he needed to make up for some past flubs like the poorly received "Best I Ever Had" video. He did all that and more this year, which led the Brain Trust to vote him the #4 Hottest MC in the Game of 2010.

Drake was a staple on radio all year, whether it was "Bedrock" with Young Money, "Money to Blow" with Baby and Lil Wayne, "Forever" with Kanye West, Lil Wayne and Eminem, or any one of the songs from So Far Gone that stayed in rotation.

"He's been on the radio all year," RapFix editor Hillary Crosley said during the Hottest MCs roundtable. "Like, I can't get away from him. It's impossible."

"Different artists, they may have a hot regional presence or be hot on the East Coast or Down South around Atlanta or whatever," added MTV News supervising producer Sean Lee, "but this dude — everywhere, man."

Sure, there are artists who might be big on the radio, but few do it as whimsically as Drake does. To wit, his Thank Me Later singles were all creative stretches. "Find Your Love" was an R&B single that found Mr. Graham not rapping, but crooning over a rich piano line and lo-fi electro blips. "Over" saw him spitting feverishly against staccato drums and questioning his newfound fame. And "Fancy" was a gentlemanly nod of female appreciation — not something rappers are typically wont to do. Reception to these songs was overwhelmingly positive, leading Thank Me Later to move 447,000 units its first week, and it's closing in on platinum status.

But Drake also made his presence felt perhaps in the most important arena of the modern music business: performing. Aside from staging the October's Very Own festival in Toronto this past August (where Rick Ross, Young Jeezy, Eminem and Jay-Z made appearances), but he also hit the road for his Light Dreams & Nightmares Tour. And what's more, he was the guy Eminem and Jay-Z brought out at their Home and Home concert series this past September. Yeah, the big dogs really get down with Drake like that.

"You got the biggest-selling artist of the past 10 years, Eminem, who brings out Drake to hype up the crowd at the Home and Home Tour," Sway said, acknowledging just how powerful of a statement that move was.

That said, the roundtable wasn't in agreement that Drake really had the performance component of his career down just yet. In fact, during the taping, Drake was actually voted #3 on the Hottest MCs list but was then demoted by Kanye West, who the Brain Trust felt brought more to the table as an artist.

"You know what Kanye does that Drake doesn't? He reminds you of what a full package is," MTV Jams' Sheila Grullon said.

MTV News senior producer Rahman Dukes replied: "What's missing from the Drake package?"

"He's missing charisma," MTV Jams' Tuma Basa said. "He's missing drama."

MTV News senior writer Jayson Rodriguez put the battle between the two in context of what type of attention each artist gets. "Kanye is attracting the world's attention," he said. "Whereas Drake isn't there yet. He's building that up."

In a vote, Kanye beat out Drake for the #3 slot. But still, give credit where it's due: Drake won an ASCAP Award for Rap Song of the Year ("Forever"), a BMI Award for Most Performed Urban Song of the Year ("Best I Ever Had"), Best Male Hip-Hop Artist at the BET Awards and New Artist of the Year at the Juno Awards. He also graced the covers of XXL, Vibe, Complex and Billboard and even had his very own MTV documentary, "Better Than Good Enough." He's come a long way since "Degrassi."

The 2010 Hottest MCs in the Game rollout is now complete! As in 2008 and 2009, the criteria is based on a combination of rhyme skill, flow, buzz, commercial success, business ventures, Web presence and cultural influence. Upload your comments, reactions, arguments and/or your own list to Your.MTV.com or send tweets with the hashtag #hottestmcs — the best responses could be on TV or our hip-hop blog, RapFix! Kanye West Breaks Down Opening Line Of 'Runaway'

West said line about not trusting media reports is 'poignant.'
By Mawuse Ziegbe, with reporting by Sway Calloway

Kanye West at his "Runaway" interview on Saturday
Photo: MTV News

Kanye West's film debut, "Runaway," is short on dialogue but the film's few verbal exchanges make an impact.

The first line appears minutes into the movie when West advises the newly arrived phoenix — played by Selita Ebanks — to be wary of the information dished out by the media. West shuts off a televised report that has captivated the phoenix, saying, "First rule in this world, baby, don't pay attention to anything you see in the news." West explained in an interview with MTV News directly after the film's premiere that he kicked off the dialogue with the concise declaration because of his personal experience with published hearsay.

"I just thought that was so funny," he revealed. "When me and Hype [Williams] sat and wrote the entire script we had a lot more dialogue and I just thought that was a poignant thing. I thought of it just on set ... for the first thing for you to hear me actually say on my first film. 'Cause everyday on the news there's some new bullsh-- about me ... or about everything going on. Once you're on this side of the camera you're like, 'Aw man, none of this stuff is actually real.' "

West added that he had specific ideas for the delivery of the film's spare script.

"I wanted to hit all the lines just kinda cheeky, really heavy-handed, on some [Quentin] Tarantino-like [style] 'Anything you say in the news,' " West said, playfully affecting a thuggish accent."So it almost has a cadence of rap."

'Ye added that the film's lack of verbally-articulated lines makes the project difficult to characterize.

"But just the fact that [there's] only three points of dialogue through it you can't classify what type of film this is either," he said.

As far as his acting skills, 'Ye said he feels he's on par with other filmmakers who occasionally jump in front of the camera.

"I think I'm around a level of like, Tarantino or Spike Lee or something like that" he said. "I'm no Daniel Day-Lewis ... but I created the whole thing so it doesn't really matter [as long as] you get the point."

'Ye's first foray into film clocks in about 35 minutes, but while the artist maintained that he'd like to see "Runaway" in movie theaters, he said he's not sure if he would make a feature-length production. West said he's largely indifferent to the running time of his projects and that it's all about putting out a game-changing piece of art.

"The idea of full-length is not my main concern," he said. "It's just that people enjoy themselves and ... they have to put their hands over their ears because what they see just blew their brains out."

What did you think of the dialogue in Kanye West's "Runaway" short? Tell us in the comments!

Stone Sour Bassist on 'Audio Secrecy': "We Out-did Ourselves With This One"

Stone Sour released their brand new album and third studio effort Audio Secrecy at the beginning of September, and the response has been amazing. Boasting the catchy single "Say You'll Haunt Me" and pummeling "Mission Statement," publications and radio stations everywhere have Stone Sour on their radar. And amongst them is Sound Sphere Magazine, who caught up with bassist Shawn Economaki to discuss the writing and recording of the new record. Check out an excerpt of the chat below and go right here to read the full feature.

Audio Secrecy is out now. Get your copy of the stunning new album at this location.

S] 'Audio Secrecy' represents hidden tones in music – do you feel like you have surprised yourselves with what you achieved on this record?

SE] When we set out to write and record this, we actually had no expectation of it, as with our previous albums - it’s always just been if we write the song and we like the song, we do it. We do feel though that we out-did ourselves with this one.

S] Do you think it’s your best record so far then?

SE] Absolutely. We were able to spend a little bit more time than we did on the previous record, and I think that shines through quite a bit. We spent two months on the production, and that was the first time the band has ever had that opportunity, so I think that helped tremendously.

S] You all wrote songs together and separately on this record – can you tell us how this approach makes life easier for you during the recording process?

SE] Well what happens is, while Jim [Root, rhythm guitar] and Corey [Taylor, vocals] are off doing Slipknot, Josh [Rand, guitar], Roy [Mayorga, drums] and myself would be in a different state. So, Josh, Roy and I had got together a few times and worked on some stuff and Corey and Jim did the same whilst they were touring. Then, when they got back from that last Slipknot album, we all put our collective ideas together and said ‘I like that one.’ We just worked on this, and everyone taught each other the parts that they’d done on their own, and just added their own layer to it. That's how we ended up with the songs that we have recorded.
