Eminem's Proof Tribute 'Difficult' Leaks Online

Shady remembers late best friend in somber track.

Eminem has always maintained that the death of his best friend and D12 member Proof was one of the most devastating moments of his life, and four years after his passing, Eminem is still upholding the late MC's legacy in his music.

On Thursday (December 30), the Em track "Difficult" surfaced on the Web, in which the Detroit lyricist devotes several bars to his relationship with his fallen homey -- who was gunned down in a Motor City nightclub in 2006 -- and how the memory of his trusted friend still lingers.

"Doody, most of my life it's just been me and you there/ I continuously stare at pictures of you/ I never got to say 'I love you' as much as I wanted to, but I do/ Yeah, I say it now when you can't hear me/ What the f--- good does that do me now?/ But somehow I know you're near me," Em rhymes in the first verse. On "Difficult," a solemn, hook-free record powered by somber chords and a glacially slow beat, Eminem speaks on the enduring impact the loss of Proof has had on his life and the lives of their mutual friends.

"Everyone else is just trying to pick up the pieces/ Man, how could you touch so many f---ing lives and just leave us?" he spits. "They say grievance has its way of affecting everyone different/ If it's true, how the f--- I'm supposed to get over you?"

Em also opens up about the duo's bond as childhood buddies who remained close friends for much of their lives until Proof, born DeShaun Holton, was killed at age 32.

"Doody, that's what we called each other/ I don't know where it came from, but it just stuck with us, we was always brothers/ Never thought about each other's skin colors," Em rhymes. The Recovery star also speaks candidly about cherishing an article of clothing Proof wore during a special moment in Em's life.

"And this may sound a little strange, but I'mma tell it/ I found a jacket that you left at my wedding, I picked it up to smell it/ I wrapped it up in plastic until I put it in glass and hang it up in the hallway so I can always look at it," he raps.

Em also hints at the controversy surrounding Proof's violent death. The D12 rapper allegedly shot a fellow clubgoer at the Detroit haunt CCC and was shot and killed by a bouncer who was related to Proof's shooting victim. A local prosecutor later ruled that the bouncer was acting in his cousin's defense and did not face murder charges. In "Difficult," Em paints a portrait of Proof as a peaceful person who wouldn't have resorted to violence unnecessarily.

"You were the peacemaker, Doody/ I know sometimes you were moody, but you hated confrontation and truly hated the feuding/ But you was down for yours whenever it came to scrappin'/ If it had to happen, it had to happen," he spits.

The leaked track isn't the first time Shady has turned to music to eulogize his late friend. Em said earlier this year that "You're Never Over," from his chart-topping seventh album, Recovery, "finally did Proof some kind of justice by being able to put that together and dump my heart on the record."

What do you think of Eminem's "Difficult" track? Let us know in the comments.

Justin Bieber's Early Drummer Days Featured In 'Never Say Never'

Friends and family talk about Bieber's evolution as a drummer in new clip from upcoming 3-D film.

The February 11 release of John Chu's 3-D doc "Justin Bieber: Never Say Never" is fast approaching, and in addition to the Biebs' many tweets about the flick, we now have another glimpse at what it has in store for eager fans. A new clip from the film shows how Bieber's talent for drums surfaced at a young age. It's also full of more cute Bieber baby videos.

"He never had any lessons or anything. I just never thought of it being anything other than for fun," Bieber's mother, Pattie Malette, says in the clip.

Bieber's drum collection quickly expanded from a handheld drum to a mini drum kit, and eventually, his family friends held a benefit concert and raised enough money to buy the young prodigy his own set of Pearl drums.

The 16-year-old pop star made waves at the 2010 VMAs when he rocked out on the drums during his amplified set. He also showed off his skills on the skins at the 2009 Jingle Ball in Sacramento, where he played an impressive drum solo during Cobra Starship's performance. Starship frontman Gabe Saporta, who had been trying to challenge Bieber to a dance off, tweeted after the fact, "Justin Bieber smoked me hard tonight. He couldn't win the dance off. But he shredded a gnarly drum solo. I back this kid on the real. Legit."

Bieber wouldn't be the first artist to start out behind the kit before his vocal capabilities propelled him to the spotlight. He joins the powerful ranks of drummers-turned-singers such as Dave Grohl, Phil Collins, Karen Carpenter, Ringo Starr and Tommy Lee.

Kanye West Turned Defiance Into Victory In 2010

Via Twitter, G.O.O.D. Fridays and My Beautiful Dark Twisted Fantasy 'Ye came out on top this year.
By Jayson Rodriguez, with reporting by Steven Roberts

Kanye West performs at the 2010 Video Music Awards

So, this Kanye West fella, you might have heard of him. He basically Swift-boated his career at the 2009 VMAs, went into a self-imposed exile and then triumphantly returned nearly a year later with what many have called the best album of 2010. Huh?

In just over 12 months, West baffled critics by going from zero to hero, while still lashing out at the media and, with stunts like his #kanyeshrug hashtag, essentially proving he's the same guy he always was.

"I think the thing with Kanye, he really just stuck to the same script, which is basically, Iove me or hate me but the music is gonna be so great you have to deal with me," Complex editor-in-chief Noah Callahan-Bever told MTV News. "And that's been the story of his career since the beginning. I think this year, he happened to be loved or hated in such extremes at the end of 2009, going on a self-imposed exile in Hawaii, he really created a currency in the intrigue with what he was doing."

What he was doing was assembling a barrage of hip-hop's best producers — including Q-Tip, the RZA, Pete Rock and more — and a diverse range of collaborators to help put together his artistic denouement: My Beautiful Dark Twisted Fantasy. The collection was bombastic musically and browbeating lyrically.

The first shot, "Power," was a sonic middle finger to his detractors. 'Ye looked at his life and career and took stock of his place in the pop-culture ranks. It was a manifesto, of sorts, in which West declared that he was aware of his flaws and mistakes but everyone else can take them or leave them.

"He really figured that great music will change things," RapRadar and RESPECT. magazine's Elliot Wilson explained.

It wasn't just the music, though, that helped Kanye come back into people's good graces once again. He took to Twitter to voice this thoughts, sometimes in amusing non sequiturs, sometimes in revealing bunches of dispatches came in bunches, like when he addressed, once and for all, the Taylor Swift incident.

In words that he couldn't seem to put to melody or properly convey to a talk-show host, West simply took responsibility, apologized and moved on to the next track. And then he proceeded to change the subject with his string of G.O.O.D. Friday releases online.

"He did select press but he made a lot of noise online," New York Times music critic Jon Caramanica said. "I think he understood quickly how to make the best use of that medium."

But what the critics and everyone who catches themselves constantly humming songs from Fantasy agree on is that "he really brought it all back to the music," as Callahan-Bever put it. "At the end of the day no Taylor Swift incident or 'Today' show appearance can take away from [that]."

30 Years of Roadrunner: Mikael Akerfeldt

2010 marks the 30th anniversary of Roadrunner Records, and as we close out the year in celebration, we're looking back on the last three decades with a little help from our friends.

Following on from Soulfly/Cavalera Conspiracy's Max CavaleraMachine Head guitarist Phil Demmel, SlipknotMurderdolls drummer Joey Jordison, and Killswitch Engage bassist Mike D'Antonio, we're turning it over to Opeth frontman Mikael Akerfeldt to help us recount the past by answering some quick questions survey-style.

See what he had to say below, and stay tuned for the next Roadrunner artist checking in Monday.

In 30 years you will be…

I'll be 66 years old. Probably too old to be pumping out Bloodbath songs, but possibly still playing to equally old fans from the past and owning a record store. Massively successful of course!

Best music moment of the last 30 years.

Since 1980? Wow, there's quite a few right? All Maiden, Priest, Accept, Scorpions, Yngwie records that were released in the 80's.  Perfect Strangers with Deep Purple....I mean, come the fuck on! Death Metal scene, Morbid Angel being the only band that really lasted for me. I can revisit their Vincent records and they're still top class. Can't say that about many of their peers at the time.

Highlight of your career thus far?

Has to be playing the Royal Albert Hall in March during the 20th Anniversary mini-tour. I mean, bands like us simply don't get that chance, but we did and it was magical. It was a big step up the ladder for us. Separated us from the rest of the pack, he he!

Crappiest moment in music in the last 30 years.

Numerous! 2002-2003 were bad years for Opeth. Not in terms of success, but personal matters. Contemporary music is an odd phenomenon to me. It's increasingly more difficult to find interesting stuff and on top of that, all the record stores are gone. The music scene is really flourishing but in secrecy so to speak. There are probably phenomenal bands out there that no one will hear ‘cause people stopped buying records. I don't care what kids say, the record sales is a platform you need to get out there, and unless you're a fucking entrepreneur you're fucked more or less.

Album from your generation that will be legendary in 30 years.

Opeth catalogue, perhaps it's obvious!!?? Well if I have to pick records done during my time as a professional musician, it's more difficult, ‘cause I'm stuck with my old vinyl. However, In The Nightside Eclipse with Emperor will live on, same with the De Mysteriis... by Mayhem. I don't really like Mayhem's music, but I can acknowledge it's a classic and a super influential Black Metal record. There are albums I personally love but who failed to make that impact that the above mentioned records did. They were released unto the scene, and it was like "Boom"!

Roadrunner classic album.

Pestilence Consuming Impulse, all the King Diamond and Mercyful Fate records. The guitar records of the 80's with fucking Joey Tafolla haha! I'd have to say Them by King Diamond. What a monster of an album! What makes them classic? I wouldn't be able to be friends with a metalhead who didn't own and worship Them. I mean, it's obligatory and unless you're a fucking wimp you own that records and you know every lyric and every drumfill! haha!

Opeth are currently working on their tenth studio album due for release on Roadrunner Records in 2011. To celebrate their 20th anniversary, the band has just released

'Spider-Man' Lead Actress To Depart Broadway Show

Natalie Mendoza leaving 'Turn Off the Dark,' New York Times reports.
By Terri Schwartz

While one "Spider-Man: Turn Off the Dark" actor is desperate to return to Broadway's most-expensive musical once he recovers from his injury, another is headed out the door. The New York Times reports Natalie Mendoza, the lead actress who suffered a concussion after she was struck on the head with a rope, has been negotiating an exit agreement for days.

Mendoza seemed to confirm her exit with the tweet, "Can feel a trip to India coming on & visiting my magic little orphanage Ramana's Garden in Rishikesh. Raising funds as we speak. Be the change."

The Times learned of her departure from two people who work on the show and who spoke on the condition of anonymity. A spokesperson for "Turn Off the Dark" could not confirm to the paper that Mendoza is leaving, and a spokesperson for the actress declined to comment.

The actress, best known for her role in "The Descent," suffered a concussion November 28, and though she returned to the production three days later, she took another two weeks off after experiencing nausea and headaches.

Mendoza played Arachne, the spider-villainess who becomes obsessed with Spider-Man. Director Julie Taymor created the character specifically for the mythology of the musical. The role required that the actress perform flying sequences while upside down, something she wasn't able to handle after she was injured.

Mendoza is expected to be replaced by her understudy, America Olivo. Mendoza wrote on her Facebook page Sunday that she was "almost back to normal" and had reduced her medicine intake to two nausea tablets and four painkillers a day.

After a fourth accident December 20 sent stunt double and aerialist Christopher Tierney to the emergency room, the production instituted a series of new safety measures. Taymor released a statement saying, "Nothing is more important than the safety of our 'Spider-Man' family and we'll continue to do everything in our power to protect the cast and crew."

Preview performances continue at the Foxwoods Theater in Times Square, and the musical's official Broadway opening date is February 7.

Check out everything we've got on "Spider-Man: Turn Off the Dark."

Lauryn Hill Announces 17 Tour Dates

Outing kicks off Monday in New York.
By James Dinh

After a string of festival appearances, Lauryn Hill has announced that she'll embark on an intimate North American tour starting next week. The 17-date outing, which begins at New York City's Highline Ballroom on Monday, will venture throughout the East Coast and Canada before wrapping up in New Jersey in February.

In a statement, Hill said she "may never play venues of this size again." According to a press release, the rapper/singer will be accompanied by a live band and will perform a set list of the many hits from her celebrated 1998 solo album, The Miseducation of Lauryn Hill.

For those fans who are hoping to hear something new from Hill, they can expect to see some of her biggest hits "reworked yet faithful to the rigor, soulfulness and power of the original music." Initial news of the reclusive singer hitting the road for a series of East Coast shows broke a few weeks ago.

When MTV News caught up with the iconic artist in August, she kept mum on when the hungry public could expect a new album, saying, "We're getting closer. That's all I can say."

While the singer takes her time with new music, she revealed that she enjoys the versatility of today's artists. "I have respect for what people do," Hill said. "I also like to hear the eclectics, I like to hear the mixture. There's a lot of different creative energies out there right now. I respect the different sounds that I'm hearing. It's been such a long time since I've gotten my voice and my ideas [out]. In terms of collaborations, that's not even something I've been thinking about per se. I'm happy that people are still making music. That we still have a platform with which to make music. It's gonna be interesting to see what the future holds."

Lauryn Hill's tour dates, according to a press release:

» 12/27 - New York, NY @ Highline Ballroom
» 12/28 - Brooklyn, NY @ Music Hall of Williamsburg
» 1/1 - New York, NY @ Bowery Ballroom
» 1/3 - New York, NY @ The Blue Note

Diddy Thanks Fans, Twitter For Last Train To Paris' Top 10 Debut

'Y'all made this project a success,' he tells Dirty Money supporters.
By James Dinh

In his latest video blog, Diddy credits the early success of Diddy-Dirty Money's long-delayed album Last Train to Paris to his fans and Twitter. The project, which had been expected to sell just 65,000 copies in its first week, nabbed the #7 spot on next week's Billboard albums chart with 101,000 copies sold.

"Anybody that knows me, it's rare when I'm extra happy, but today ... this last two weeks, I've just been blown away by all the support that I've gotten from you guys," the rapper says in the YouTube clip. "You already know I deal with a lot of hate, and I talk about that. But it's also important to talk about when I'm dealing with a lot of love, and the love that y'all have shown me and the girls on this project ... y'all made this project a success, and I want to say thank you."

While Diddy acknowledged the fact that the group didn't score any #1 singles with the project (so far), he revealed that the hits are on the way with "Coming Home" and "Ass on the Floor." The media mogul stressed, however, that he considered Paris to be one of the first albums where Twitter and viral hype trumped radio support.

In addition to the Bad Boy CEO's video, the trio gushed about defying early estimates in a statement: "Well, they were wrong. With the help of our fans and the tremendous power of Twitter our debut album skyrocketed to #7 on The Billboard 200 chart scanning more than 100k units. Also this week, our new single, 'Coming Home' broke through to the top ten on iTunes. This is an amazing start for a brand new group and for a debut album. We are so thankful!"

Earlier this month, MTV News spoke with Diddy about the LP's many delays. "The wait is over," Diddy said. "We pushed our album back a bunch of times because we felt, to be honest, we weren't ready. I think a lot of times artists make that mistake. They get locked into a date and they're like, 'Well, I told everybody my date was this.' "

DevilDriver Guitarist on 'Beast': "The Songwriting Is The Best We?ve Ever Done"

While on tour in the UK earlier this year, DevilDriver guitarist Jeff Kendrick sat down with British music mag Altsounds to discuss a number of things. From the band's attempt to get in the Guinness Book of World Records via the largest circle pit ever recorded, to funny tour stories documented in their upcoming DVD, to the brand new album Beast, they covered a lot of ground.
Read an excerpt of the Q&A below, and go RIGHT HERE for the full feature.
DevilDriver will release their 5th studio album Beast on February 22nd. In addition to the full album, the band will be offering a special edition with a bonus DVD documentary entitled "You May Know Us From the Stage." Go HERE for more details.
AltSounds: What’s going to be different from it in comparison to your other albums?
Jeff Kendrick: Well I think the songwriting is the best we’ve ever done, I think the musicianship is the best. I think it’s the best vocally, it has the best production too. I think it’s got simply the best everything. As far as the songs go, hooks and things like that, there’ll definitely be there. In terms of it being straight up heavy? It’s the heaviest and most brutal record by far. It’s fucking heavy man!

AltSounds: This is good news! [laughs] Was it a smooth and easy writing process?
Jeff Kendrick: I guess it was yeah! It was great for us because everyone in the band writes, and that’s all we can do. We released Pray For Villains in July 09, andliterally went into record an album in April 10. That’s only seven or eight months… Or maybe nine? [laughs]

AltSounds: I think it’s nine… possibly [laughs]
Jeff Kendrick: Yeah, it wasn’t much time at all!

AltSounds: I’ve looked at a potential track listing for the album, and some of the titles that I saw included “Shitlist,” “Cold Blooded” and “You Make Me Sick.” Do you think that this dark and edgy feel that you guys have to your music is vital in becoming a successful metal band?
Jeff Kendrick: Honestly man, I think it just comes down to the fact that we generally care. I think it goes beyond the fact that we’re playing music, it’s just the vibe in general because it’s real shit. It’s not contrived, it’s not fake, it’s not created for any other reason than it’s what comes from our hearts. I think people identify with that. As far as being successful goes, I think a lot of our success comes from the fact that we never go home from touring [laughs] We’re still on an upward climb, and I’m just grateful for everything that’s happened to us. We’ve got a long way to go, but we’re certainly not going anywhere.

Nicki Minaj Surprised By Success: 'I Never Saw All Of This'

'When [Lil] Wayne first called and reached out, I thought it was a joke,' MC admits to MTV News.

What's a girl without her dreams? Nicki Minaj has realized more of hers than most this year, from releasing her highly successful debut LP, Pink Friday to becoming MTV News' #6 Hottest MC in the Game. And, the Queens MC said she's still surprised by her achievements.

"A part of me expected it, because I wanted it so bad, but I never saw all of this," the MC told MTV News' Sway Calloway. "You know, I never would've imagined that I would've signed to [Lil] Wayne, number one."

On Monday, Minaj took time between takes while filming her video for "Moment 4 Life" with Drake to talk about becoming the queen of rap's reigning crew.

"[I] never imagined that Young Money/ Cash Money would be the hip-hop crew," she said. "To be signed to them is one thing, but to be signed to them when they're at their height, when this has become like an insane movement? No, I never imagined that, because when Wayne first called and reached out, I thought it was a joke.

"I've wanted this for a very long time, but I couldn't — not even with a crystal ball — I could not have predicted these things would really happen this way."

Minaj has even outsold, if we're counting weekly sales, one of her idols: Mr. Kanye West. West's My Beautiful Dark Twisted Fantasy dropped November 22, the same day as Pink Friday. And while West garnered bigger opening-week numbers, Barbie has outpaced his album sales per week for the past 14 days. To date, Minaj's release has sold 658,439 units, according to Nielsen SoundScan.

"Girl power!" she said, with a giggle.

Are you surprised by Nicki Minaj's success this year? Tell us in the comments below.

Keri Hilson Says 'The Way You Love Me Video' Is 'Not Just Sexual'

Keri Hilson Says 'The Way You Love Me Video' Is 'Not Just Sexual'

Keri Hilson gets sexy in her new video for "The Way You Love Me."

In the clip, Hilson plays B.B., a gun-slinging woman who sets out to bring her man into custody. The video also stars JoJo, Faith Evans and Diddy-Dirty-Money's Dawn Richard as her band of "bad bitches." The video's sex factor climbs quickly, as Hilson sheds more and more clothes, writhing around while singing all about her loving her man.

But when MTV News spoke to Hilson this week, she shrugged off any controversy but admitted she was a little bit surprised by the reaction she's been getting.

"In that record I'm talking about one guy, I'm talking about one night and this is what I want on this one night, and I'm not afraid to say it," she explained. "Not just sexual, I just mean whatever — open your mouth. That's empowering to me. That's what the song is about."

For his part, Rick Ross, who's featured on the track, chills in the club, while beautiful people drink and dance the night away. But it's Hilson's scantily clad popping and locking that has everyone buzzing.

"The Way You Love Me" is off Hilson's latest release, No Boys Allowed, and she clarified the meaning behind the title, saying that while the boys aren't welcome to her party, real men are.

"Yeah, men [are allowed]," Hilson said. "That's the point of the album. I feel like I give so much of the female perspective, and I really wanted to give guys a chance to sound off and give their perspective on certain things, so I had to bring in the men."

What do you think of Keri's "The Way You Love Me Video"? Tell us in the comments!

Drake Calls Nicki Minaj's Breakout Year 'Incredible'

'It's amazing now to see her come into her own,' he tells MTV News on set of 'Moment 4 Life' video.
By Jayson Rodriguez, with reporting by Sway Calloway

The Young Money triumvirate of Lil Wayne, Drake and Nicki Minaj had a banner year filled with successful albums, buzzed about moments onstage and chart-toppers.

Drake compared the success of his and Minaj's debuts with Weezy's opening-week sales of Tha Carter III, saying each subsequent project further cemented the collective's status.

"I think it's crazy that somehow, some higher power brought all these individuals together," Drake told MTV News on the set of Minaj's "Moment 4 Life" video. "I remember being on the [tour] bus when Wayne played me Tha Carter III, which went on to sell a million copies in one week. Then it was Thank Me Later. It was this big pressure, and that went on to sell what it did.

"And now," he continued, "to think of the girl that I used to ride the bus with — and that's what she was to me: this girl that I rode the bus with. I was like, 'Female rap?' And I'm being dead honest with you. [I thought,] 'Man, it's been a while since there's been a female rapper, and I'm curious to see how this works.'

"It's not that I didn't believe," he added. "And she was probably looking at me like, 'This Jew from Canada: I don't know.' "

And now, after the successful debut of Minaj's Pink Friday, the Toronto lyricist said he couldn't be happier for the "Right Thru Me" star.

"It's amazing now to see her come into her own, build this brand and persona," he said. "It's incredible."

DevilDriver Bassist To Sit Out Early 2011 Tour, Offers Update To Fans

In a statement posted on DevilDriver's official site, bassist Jon Miller gave the following update on his health and future with the band:

To all DevilDriver fans and friends, I wanted to give you an update on my status as far as my health is concerned.

Regarding the past 2 European tours, I was either forced to leave by my own accord or asked to leave by my band/managment.

I have been touring with DevilDriver for almost the past ten years and the drugs and alcohol have finally caught up with me. I realized this when I ended up in the ICU on my birthday last week.

I need to make a change so that I can save my own life and keep the friends that I still have left.

I know that alot of DevilDriver fans seek me out first as the one to party with because I consider myself a very social person who is quite outgoing, personable and friendly.

That was all fun in my 20's touring with the band, but as I am entering my early 30's I can feel the damage catching up with me mentally and physically. I don't want to burn out prematurely before my time on this Earth is up.

On January 1st I will be entering an intense rehabilitation program in order for me to reclaim my health and the person who I once was.

I will not be doing the Canadian tour in January or the Australian tour in February and March. This is for my own good. I need to come out of rehab with a sound body and mind. After I complete my rehabilitation I hope to see all DevilDriver friends and family as soon as I can.

Much love to you all.

Miley Cyrus 'Has Learned Her Lesson,' Kelly Osbourne Says

'Miley is one of the most hard-working, respectful women I have ever worked with,' Osbourne tweeted about her "So Undercover" co-star.

Miley Cyrus has courted and survived several controversies throughout 2010, the most recent being a video that made its way to the Web showing the teen star smoking from a bong. But her "So Undercover" co-star Kelly Osbourne has taken to Twitter to defend the 18-year-old singer/actress.

"We are all having so much fun on set today. I looooove days like [this]!" Osbourne wrote on Tuesday. "Just read in the rags that apparently my mum thinks Miley is a bad influence on me. it could not be father from the truth! ... Actually it's the other way around. Miley has us all on a health kick. Gym/early nights. [They're] really scraping the barrel on that one!"

Osbourne, who has faced her fair share of controversy over the years, went on to tweet, "This really makes me mad. Miley is one of the most hard working respectful women I have ever worked with. I am learning a lot from her!

Osbourne added, "Miley and I have become really close. I'm sick of all the haters judging her. She made one mistake and trust me, she has learned her lesson!"

The one-time reality star did admit that she and Cyrus have been indulging in one vice on the set. "This is how im a bad influence on Miley. I force her to eat cupcakes so I don't feel so bad about eating one!" she wrote, and attached a photo of Miley and herself munching on a couple of the sweet treats.

Osbourne's Twitter thread comes one day after news broke that the Miley's parents are selling their marital home in Toluca Lake, Calif. Cyrus was recently spotted shopping in New Orleans during a break from filming "So Undercover," where she reportedly chatted with makeup artist Denika Bedrossian about a new tattoo she got.
