Why Is The Voice Such a Big Hit?

Two weeks in and it seems like NBC's new singing competition series The Voice may be the surprise new hit TV series of the year so far. In its debut night, the show surprised many in the entertainment industry by garnering higher ratings than such established hits as Glee and Dancing With the Stars. In its second week, the size of audience for The Voice grew. Critical reviews have not been particularly positive. So just what is it that makes the Dutch import such a hit with American audiences? Is it the panel of four judges: Christina Aguilera, Adam Levine of Maroon 5, Cee Lo Green, and Blake Shelton? Is it the quality of the singers competing? Is it simply a fresh approach to a singing competition? Or is it the fact that this singing show isn't American Idol?
