US Recorded Music Sales For 2010 Post Another Disappointing Year

Reporting on music sales totals for the year was once again disappointing at the end of 2010. CD sales are down nearly 20% for a fourth year in a row and album sales in general dipped nearly 13% compared with last year. Many in the music industry identify illegal downloading and sharing of music as a primary culprit. However, I think it is very very important to take into account the significant reduction in bricks and mortar retail space for music. Large chain music stores are mainly a thing of the past and the space devoted to music in stores like Best Buy and Target continues to decrease. Even with the digital availability of purchases, we remain consumer creatures that do respond when something enticing is placed in front of our face at a physical bricks and mortar store.
