Grammy Best New Artist Rules Allow "Not So New" Artists To Be Nominated

Some music fans looking at the Grammy Awards list of Best New Artist nominees tonight may be scratching their heads a bit. All of the nominees released music prior to the eligibility year for the upcoming awards ceremony, and, in the case of Bon Iver, it was a critically acclaimed album released back in 2008. How can this happen? It is because the Grammy Awards changed the eligibility rules for Best New Artist after Lady Gaga was excluded from a nomination for the 2010 Grammy Awards after having been nominated previously for a dance music award. The rules now state that an artist must have released a full-length album but may not have released more than three. In addition, they can not have won an award previously. Nominee Nicki Minaj released songs and mixtapes prior to this past year, but she did not release her debut album Pink Friday until November of 2010. Check out the nominees below.
