Lady Gaga Has Three Heads In New Fashion Film

Mother Monster collaborates with Thierry Mugler for latest visual art piece that debuted at Paris Fashion Week.

Lady Gaga and her pal, Thierry Mugler designer Nicola Formichetti, hit Paris Fashion Week once again, dropping a new film during the Mugler women's wear show on Wednesday.

As MTV News previously reported, Gaga and Formichetti teamed up with directors Inez van Lamsweerde and Vinoodh Matadin for the project. On Thursday (September 29), fans not in Paris for Fashion Week got to see a special edit of the film when it premiered online.

The video, which mixes Mugler runway show footage with clips from the new Gaga film, offers another take on Mother Monster's ever-evolving persona. It opens on a close-up of Gaga's face, her teeth diamond-encrusted, as she says, "Sometimes, my heart sometimes feels so black ... and other days my heart feels like rainbows."

She flips her multicolored hair, saying, "I am Paris. We are Paris." In the next scene, a three-headed Gaga dances while a haunting track plays in the background. The image is reminiscent of the one that appeared on the cover of V magazine earlier this year. (As for the runway show, the clothes seen in the video are futuristic in style, in mostly muted tones.)

The directors, Inez and Vinoodh, worked with Gaga on her "Yoü and I" fashion films and, so far, three have featured some of her alter egos, including the nymph, the bride and Yüyi the mermaid. More "Yoü and I" films are expected to premiere, but when and where remains a mystery.

Gaga and Mugler have collaborated before: Besides the fact that designer Formichetti is her stylist, he has also debuted some of her brand-new music at his shows. In January, she premiered a remix of her Born This Way track "Scheiße" at a Mugler fashion show. Two months later, in March, Gaga not only walked the runway at a show, she debuted her song "Government Hooker"

The pop star is already back at work on her next album. Late Wednesday, she tweeted, "Almost #14MillionMonsters!! Thank you for making Born This Way really matter, this has been a crazy memorable year! Writing music today."

Lil Wayne's Success 'Gratifying' For Mystikal

Celebrity Favorites: Mystikal
Since Mystikal's been gone, a lot has changed on hip-hop's playing field. In 2004, when Mystikal was locked up on sexual battery and extortion charges, Jay-Z was fresh off his "retirement," Kanye West was just beginning his rookie year in rap and Lil Wayne was getting set to drop the first album in his now-famed Tha Carter series.

Now, Kanye and Jay are the Throne and both enjoy veteran rap status, and Lil Wayne is sitting on top of the world. Mystikal recalls his fellow New Orleans rapper's come-up and can't help but feel a bit responsible for the growth.

"Wayne was a student in my dojo before. I was a sensei before. I had big inspiration on him," Mystikal said of the younger Weezy. "It's gratifying to see him reach the heights that he reached with his hustle. So I'm proud of him."

Mystikal, who turned 41 last week, has a catalog of rap classics. Songs like "Shake Ya Ass" and "Danger" helped shine hip-hop's light on his native New Orleans and the artists who hail from the Louisiana city. Still, the Tarantula isn't content with his past hits. He has recently been in the studio with producer Mannie Fresh, cooking up a new batch of material.

So how will this new Mystikal fit into hip-hop's current landscape?

"Just another option, just give them another option," Mystikal told Mixtape Daily of what he hopes to offer to rap fans. "All the marquee artists are who they are; I don't have to say no names. [The fans] just ready for more options, they ready for some other big cards to play. Trust me!"

First, it was Demi Lovato, and now, Justin Bieber is jumping on the Lil Wayne "How to Love" bandwagon. On Wednesday (September 28), the singer dropped his acoustic version of the ballad.

According to a tweet, from Bieber's manager, Scooter Braun, Bieber, in addition to producing the track, played all the instruments on it as well. Braun also shared that there's more new music coming out from Bieber, tweeting, "He has some more remixes coming too. right @seankingston."

About a minute and a half into the track, Bieber even shows off his rapping skills when he spits, "I just want to take my time/ I just want to my thing/ Maybe we press rewind/ Maybe I buy that ring/ We could grow old together/ Just share our souls together/ Find how to love, kiss and hug/ How to roll together/ I just need you by my side/ Maybe we could be all right/ I just want to hold you right/ We can go into the night/ You're the one I need."

This week, Bieber heads to South America for a string of dates on the next leg of his My World Tour, and he had this message for all the Bieliebers out there: "U know what ... I LOVE MY FANS!! and yeah i know there r haterz but u cant stop us from living our dream. hard work and this team. #wegohard."

In related news, Bieber tweeted out the date "#nov1st," perhaps a hint as to when his highly anticipated Christmas album will drop. The album, which will feature confirmed track "Falalalala" with Boyz II Men, is also rumored to contain collaborations with Sean Kingston and Taylor Swift, as well as a super-secret collaboration with "1 of the most #Legendary performers ever," according to a tweet from Braun.

Boyz II Men's Shawn Stockman said, "[Bieber] thought we'd be perfect for it. And we went in and locked in."

Lynyrd Skynyrd has licensed its name to a barbecue joint that will open within the Excalibur casino in Las Vegas, Nevada this December. (Above, Johnny Van Zant, Gary Rossington and Rickey Medlocke visit the site.) This is the first time the band has allowed its name to be used in this way.

Lynyrd Skynyrd BBQ & Beer is reportedly modeled after "Hell House," a tin shack in which the bandmembers lived and practiced in their earliest days. The restaurant will feature Texas-style barbecue for breakfast, lunch and dinner, and feature music and live entertainment at night. Band memorabilia will be on display, and members have promised to play occasional shows along with cover bands. Dancing bartenders will perform nightly and host customers in sing-alongs.

B.o.B. Is Back With Leak Of "Strange Clouds"

For those who were waiting for another mainstream pop-oriented song from B.o.B., you will have to wait a little longer. "Strange Clouds," the first single from his upcoming second album, is harder edged hip hop. It definitely has a catchy, melodic chorus, but the rhymes hit hard. Lil Wayne is a guest here, and the two voices and sensibilities blend well. Lyrically, the song is focused on self-promotion and dismissal of any haters. "Strange Clouds" leaked just a bit early. You will be able to purchase the song next week beginning October 3, 2011.

Britney Spears Under Fire For Carrying Gun In 'Criminal' Video

Clip, filmed in London, has drawn the ire of British politicians.
By James Montgomery

Britney Spears is packing heat in her new "Criminal" video, and that's landed her in hot water with U.K. politicians.

Earlier this month, Spears filmed scenes for the video in and around London, including one in which she flees a building in the borough of Hackney while clutching a pistol. And for a community still scarred from the August riots that spread across the nation, that crossed a line.

Britney Spears responds to the "Criminal" video controversy.

"I think she should apologize and make a sizeable donation to a Hackney charity that deals with young people, in compensation for the rudeness and damage that she's done to our community," borough Councilor Ian Rathbone told the ITV news program "London Tonight."

"It is only a music video, but it's images like this, with pop stars glamorizing gangs, which means that some young people ... get drawn in," Hackney's Member of Parliament, Diane Abbott, added. "Britney should really know better."

Even more concerning was the fact that, according to the Hackney Council, which okayed the video shoot, there was no mention of a gun being used in the "Criminal" production. If there had been, the Council says, Spears and co. most certainly would not have been allowed to film in the borough's recently restored Stoke Newington Town Hall.

"In this case we did not agree that a replica gun could be used at Stoke Newington Town Hall and we are disappointed," the Council said in a statement to "London Tonight." "We will be raising this matter with the production company."

Spears announced that "Criminal" would be her next single backstage at the Video Music Awards, and she has been promoting it with the release of artwork and a new remix album over the past few weeks.

A spokesperson for the singer could not be reached for comment on the "Criminal" controversy by press time.

We already knew about Bruno Mars' involvement in the upcoming "Breaking Dawn" soundtrack. But now — officially — we know who will be joining him.

Theophilus London, the Joy Formidable, Iron & Wine, Christina Perri and the Noisettes are just some of the acts confirmed for the "Dawn" soundtrack, which hits stores on November 8 (10 days before "The Twilight Saga: Breaking Dawn - Part 1" bows in theaters). The full track list was unveiled Monday (September 26) afternoon on the official "Twilight" Twitter account, confirming speculations that sprung up over the weekend, when a listing of artists and songs began making the rounds on various fansites.

Work by "Twilight"-series composer Carter Burwell and actress Mia Maestro (she plays Carmen of the Denali Cover in the "Breaking Dawn" films) also shows up on the soundtrack, as do songs by Angus and Julia Young, the Features, the Belle Brigade and Cider Sky. All in all, there are 15 tracks on the album, and all — aside from a "Wedding Version" of Iron & Wine's "Flightless Bird, American Mouth" (as any good Twilighter will tell you, the original version of the song appeared on the first "Twilight" soundtrack) and an updated take on Noisettes' "Sister Rosetta" — are new.

The "Breaking Dawn" soundtrack follows in the footsteps of the ultra-successful 2008 "Twilight" 'track (which featured new songs from Paramore and Perry Farrell), '09's "New Moon" (which boasted a new track by Death Cab for Cutie and contributions from Thom Yorke and Lykke Li) and last year's "Eclipse," which packed in tunes from Muse, Florence and the Machine, Beck and Vampire Weekend.

The full track list for 'The Twilight Saga: Breaking Dawn - Part 1' soundtrack:
» The Joy Formidable, "Endtapes"
» Angus & Julia Stone, "Love Will Take You"
» Bruno Mars, "It Will Rain"
» Sleeping at Last, "Turning Page"
» The Features, "From Now On"
» Christina Perri, "A Thousand Years"
» Theophilus London, "Neighbors"
» The Belle Brigade, "I Didn't Mean It"
» Noisettes, "Sister Rosetta (2011 Version)"
» Cider Sky, "Northern Lights"
» Iron & Wine, "Flightless Bird, American Mouth (Wedding Version)"
» Imperial Mammoth, "Requiem on Water"
» Aqualung & Lucy Schwartz, "Cold"
» Mia Maestro, "Llovera"
» Carter Burwell, "Love Death Rebirth"

Nirvana's 'Smells Like Teen Spirit' Video: Behind The MTV Premiere

Onetime '120 Minutes' host Dave Kendall relives that Sunday night the generation-defining clip debuted.
By James Montgomery, with reporting by Andréa Duncan-Mao

On September 29, 1991, Nirvana's "Smells Like Teen Spirit" video premiered on MTV's "120 Minutes," an event that, in the years that followed, would come to signify the beginning of rock's great renaissance and usher in a cultural shift that would define a generation.

Of course, back then, it was just another video on another Sunday night, and no one — not even "120" host Dave Kendall — thought otherwise.

"I have to say, quite honestly, as soon as I heard that record and saw that video, I had no idea they were going to be as huge as they were," he laughed. "I was very, very impressed. I was moved but I really didn't have any idea it would explode to the extent it did. There's the truth."

To be fair, no one did. And so, in celebration of the 20th anniversary of the album "Teen Spirit" was meant to promote — Nevermind, of course — MTV News spoke with Kendall about the days before Nirvana became the biggest band in the world and about the alt-rock explosion that followed in their immediate wake. Needless to say, once "Teen Spirit" hit, everything changed and, as host of "120," he had a front-row seat for all of it.

"At that time, most of the music '120' was playing was quite separate from the rest of MTV. Some stuff had crossed over — like, we played Midnight Oil, we played Sinead O'Connor, we played Depeche Mode, the Cure — but a lot of our stuff was really closeted. It was still in this 'alternative' genre," he explained. "So the mood in the building at that point was 'Some alternative acts might cross over, the others wouldn't.' Like, if MTV had known that Nirvana was going to be as huge as they [were], they would've world-premiered the video in prime time, not late-night Sunday on '120 Minutes.' But then, I didn't know either!"

And how could he? After all, since creating "120 Minutes" in 1986 (and beginning hosting duties soon after), Kendall had been focused on trying to find bands he loved — "I was a bit stuck in my Anglo-centric, industrial, techno-pop mode," he laughed — and hadn't been paying attention to the storm that was brewing in the Pacific Northwest. So when the "Teen Spirit" video appeared at MTV, he'd never even heard of the band that would subsequently change the world.

"I hadn't heard Bleach, I wasn't that aware of new, American rock ... when I first heard the Nevermind record," he said. "I thought it was going to be another Seattle record, so I was a little suspicious and a little resistant to it because I thought it was going to be a lot of guitars, sort of a '70s feel. I didn't think it was going to be something new," he continued. "And then when I heard it, I knew I'd been wrong. It wasn't just heavy, it wasn't just rock, it was real melancholy, real passion, real vulnerability, the way it married intense rage with deep melancholy and sadness. And that really touched me."

Little did Kendall know that within a year the "Smells Like Teen Spirit" video would help bring "120 Minutes" to the mainstream and forever alter the show's playlist too. It's little wonder, then, that he'd leave the show the following year, though, with the benefit of 20 years' worth of hindsight, he can finally appreciate everything that happened following the premiere of that one little video. And, much like the rest of us, Kendall's still amazed by it all.

"It definitely changed the landscape of alternative music at that point. It had become slightly more guitar-heavy over the previous couple of years, partly because of the Seattle grunge influence, but that was the record that ushered in the 'grunge era' into the 'alternative mainstream,' " he said. "It brought guitars back into the music, and took the emphasis away from keyboards and synthesizers. It was gutsy and heavy and authentic, and that's what changed the landscape. Nirvana opened people's eyes."

Stick with MTV News as we reveal the Nevermind You Never Knew, celebrating the 20th anniversary of Nirvana's definitive album with classic footage, new interviews and much more.

'Awkward.' Star Ashley Rickards Flees Cops, On 'When I Was 17'

MTV actress recalls hilariously mistaking police car's flashing lights for brake lights on Saturday's episode.
By Lauren Kearney

Ashley Rickards as Jenna in "Awkward."

Ashley Rickards, the star of MTV's "Awkward.," can probably sympathize with her character, Jenna, whose many FML moments include having her classmates mistake an accident for a failed suicide attempt. On Saturday's episode of "When I Was 17," she recalls a hilarious run-in with the law that sounds like it was ripped from the comedy series.

"I was driving around my neighborhood ... stop at the stop sign and there's a cop behind me and his brake lights went on," Ashley remembers in the episode airing Saturday at 11 a.m. ET/PT. "It was a stop sign — the brake lights are going to go on.

"So I keep going down the road; half a mile ... a mile. Then all of a sudden, the sirens go off," she says.

While most people would agree that the blaring of a police car siren is quite possibly one of the most terrifying sounds on the planet, the suddenly panicked Ashley was sure she hadn't done anything wrong.

"So I pull over and he says, 'Do you realize I've been trying to pull you over for the past mile?' I'm like, 'No I just heard the sirens now.' And he was like, 'I didn't have the sirens on. I was flashing my lights.' I felt like such an idiot," she laughs.

"She didn't understand that the red on the top lights were different than the brake lights," Lisa, Ashley's mom, explains.

But the "Awkward." star still swears to this day that there were no blue lights flashing, just "exclusively the red ones." Honest mistake, Ashley. Brake lights can totally be on the top of a car too, right? Or something?

"When I Was 17" — this week featuring Wyclef Jean and Ashley Rickards — airs on Saturday at 11 a.m. ET/PT on MTV.

'X Factor' Premiere: Our Expert Isn't Impressed ... Yet

MTV News' Jim Cantiello offers his first-week take on Simon Cowell's latest singing contest and suggests some upgrades.
By Jim Cantiello

Simon Cowell
Photo: FOX

After a year of hype and the promise of a revamped singing competition that will blow everything else out of the water, Simon Cowell's "X Factor" debuted and turned out to be, at best, "American Idol" in an arena and, at worst, "America's Got Talent" without the jugglers.

Comparisons to other reality competitions are unavoidable, not only because "X Factor" marks the TV return of beloved duo Simon and Paula, but because Cowell has taken elements from many competitive series and put them in a giant blender: the auditions in front of a live audience of "Talent"; the small-town-hero angle of "Idol"; former "Sing-Off "judge Nicole Scherzinger; and an impossibly tall, foreign-born, hug-happy host, à la "So You Think You Can Dance" star Cat Deeley. But so far, Frankensteining a bunch of popular TV shows hasn't made "The X Factor" feel all that groundbreaking.

In its defense, audition episodes are often the tackiest, most manipulative and most bloated part of any reality competition, particularly "American Idol." Easy-target freak shows and exploitative sob stories abound. In the two-night (!) four-hour (!!) "X Factor" premiere, we met washed-up R&B divas, recovering meth-head waste managers and a stripping novelty act that had Paula regretting her breakfast burrito.

Meanwhile, "tribute act" contestants like Prince-loving Siameze and the James Brown-aping Dexter Heygood received good reviews, even though they might seem more at home on "America's Got Talent." (Now that I mention it, one of the girls in metal duo "You Only Live Once" was just on "AGT" this summer doing the same exact shtick. You'd think Cowell's production company — which oversees both shows — would have caught that.)

After two nights, the only thing that differentiates "X Factor" from every other music-based reality competition is a $5 million contract, mentioned approximately 14 times a minute, and ... well, that's about it.

Simon Cowell spent so much time obsessing over how to top "American Idol" that he lost sight of the one show he should be paying attention to: "The Voice." NBC's midseason breakout cracked the code and figured out how to make audition episodes fresh again. The secret? Blind auditions that forced the judges to make snap decisions on the spot, aided by a giant red button left over from "Press Your Luck," which activated a giant swivel chair. There was cooked-up suspense in every single audition. Gimmicky? You bet. Fun as hell and new? Absolutely.

Truth be told, once the blind auditions ended, "The Voice" became a less exciting reality show with a so-so talent pool. The most interesting parts — the judges are also mentors, their famous friends drop by for one-on-one coaching time — were all components liberally lifted from the U.K.'s "X Factor" format. Ironic that the one reality show Simon didn't take from is the one that stole from him, don'cha think?

All hope is not lost for "The X Factor," though. When it works — like recovering addict Chris Rene performing a heart-tugging original called "Young Homey" or rugby player (and former "Idol" hopeful) Caitlyn Koch turning "Stop in the Name of Love" into an Adele song — it lives up to its potential as a fresher, more contemporary take on "Idol." (Those two auditions made me infinitely more excited than anything I saw during the "Idol" tryouts this year.) Plus, as a casual watcher of the U.K. series, I know that there are tons of surprises and high drama in store. With the promise of "awards-show-style performances" from the contestants starting with the live shows in November, I'm confident "The X Factor" will grow into the groundbreaking, one-of-a-kind, must-see spectacle it claims to be.

Until then, I'll miss Christina Aguilera and her swivel chair.

Swedish House Mafia To Play Madison Square Garden

British dance music tastemaker Pete Tong's Essential Mix brought official confirmation Friday (September 23) of what American fans of house music supergroup Swedish House Mafia have suspected for a few weeks now: Yes, Sebastian Ingrosso, Axwell and Steve Angello are slated to take the stage at New York's famed Madison Square Garden in December.

In fact, two "One Night Stand" performances have been announced and confirmed by the Swedes' label, EMI: December 16 at MSG and July 14, 2012, at Milton Keynes National Bowl in England.

Rumblings of an epic announcement have been suspected since the group first posted a website, www.230911.com, teasing coded numbers and letters that eventually came to spell out MSG and MKB. In fact, it's a form of underground promotion SHM has become known for: Before March's Miami "Masquerade Motel: One Night Stand" beach party, they released a series of teaser videos online.

With some of global DJ music's biggest hits of the past couple of years under their collective belt already — "Leave the World Behind," "One" (with Pharrell Williams), "Miami 2 Ibiza" and "Save the World" — their MSG showing will keep in line with the way Swedish House Mafia intend to conduct business: Every undertaking aims to one-up the next.

In just a year and a half, the holy trinity of house will have gone from headlining Ultra Music Festival and Electric Daisy Carnival to hosting their very own 15,000-strong South Beach party. And now comes the Garden.

Should it be a surprise that a dance music outfit will follow in the footsteps of U2, Britney Spears, Paul McCartney, Jay-Z and the Kings of Leon? Maybe not to those in the know. But in a two-year period, it's fair to say one of music's most-underground genres has gone pop. Afrojack, David Guetta, RedOne and Dr. Luke have turned the radio "club," and EDM festival attendance has skyrocketed. Dance music has never been more popular — and according to some their biggest stars, if anyone can handle the Garden, it's "the Swedes."

"The Swedish House Mafia crew: If there is one thing you can note them for, it's thinking outside the box," Pete Tong said. "It's exciting. It's something for the people to talk about that moves the culture forward."

When MTV News caught up with Tiësto in Miami this year, he said, "They inspire me. Sebastian is like the Mozart of Sweden. Steve is brilliant. He makes great underground tracks, and he has the right soul. Axwell is the pretty boy," he said, laughing. "Brown hair, blue eyes, who delivers great music. They are all three amazingly talented."

Chuckie called SHM "biggest thing at the moment." "They do the craziest club tracks, the biggest mainstream records. I really like those guys and really respect them. Swedish House Mafia, to me, is the biggest thing out there, for real."

Tickets for "One Night Stand," December 16 at Madison Square Garden, go on sale September 30 at 10 a.m. ET. For information about pre-sales and how to get tickets, head over to Swedish House Mafia's website and Facebook page. And keep your eyes and ears peeled: Expect a live album, One Night Stand, recorded on the road this year, which will feature their latest single, "Antidote" (a collaboration with Knife Party: Rob Swire and Gareth McGrillen from Pendulum), and the official release of their remix of Coldplay's "Every Teardrop is a Waterfall."

Nirvana Recall The Other 'Smells Like Teen Spirit' Video

Kurt Cobain was disappointed with the first version — so he went in and edited it himself.
By Gil Kaufman

It's one of the most iconic videos in music history, up there with Michael Jackson's "Thriller," Madonna's "Like a Virgin" or Lady Gaga's "Bad Romance." But to hear late Nirvana singer Kurt Cobain tell it, he wasn't that happy with how the final version of "Smells Like Teen Spirit" turned out, which is why he went in at the last minute and tweaked it himself.

"Although it worked ... I like the video overall, but it wasn't what I pictured in my mind," Cobain said in a December 13, 1993, interview with MTV News about the clip that helped launch a rock revolution and turned his band into unwitting grunge poster children. "When I come up with an idea for a video, I want it to be translated exactly how I see it in my mind ... and it just wasn't that way."

Nirvana's rise to fame, in their own words.

Cobain — who was notoriously hands-on with all the imagery associated with the band, including creating the artwork for their album covers — said Nirvana just didn't take enough time to prep themselves for the shoot.

"We didn't prepare ourselves enough to have as much control as we wanted to," he explained, perhaps alluding to the fact that the clip was the first one the band filmed after making the huge leap from cash-strapped Seattle indie label Sub Pop to major label Geffen/DGC as a still mostly unknown new act.

Cobain described walking in on the first day of shooting of the video — for the first single from what would become their smash breakthrough, 1991's Nevermind — with director Sam Bayer (Green Day, Justin Timberlake, The Strokes) and realizing that the set did not look as he had imagined or drawn in his storyboarding for the clip. "I told him what I wanted, I drew pictures of it, and I walked in and it wasn't what I wanted," Cobain said. "It looked like a Time-Life commercial to me, with that backdrop, it just looked like such a contemporary ... you know those kind of commercials where people are sitting there trying to sell aspirin or something? Or an AT&T commercial? That's what it looked like to me; it looked too contemporary."

Even though he was disappointed with the look of the set, Cobain had high praise for the super-jacked real fans who were trucked in to fill out the bleachers in the studio for the exhausting 12-hour shoot. "Still, the kids made the video," he said. "Even after Sam had edited it ... he edited it and sent it to me and I didn't like it, and I flew down at the last minute to L.A. and edited it myself. I threw in a few extra things which pretty much saved it."

Reluctant to toot his own horn (while, you know, totally tooting his own horn), Cobain added that there was "a lot of really good" footage that Bayer had shot that wasn't used. "If a lot of that hadn't been used, it would have been a really bad video," he laughed, alluding to the shots of the (over) excited kids trashing the set. "There wasn't really a lot of that, and most of the stuff that was used looked really contrived. There was no spontaneity in it. So I just threw all the spontaneous parts in."

Stick with MTV News all week as we reveal the Nevermind You Never Knew, celebrating the 20th anniversary of Nirvana's definitive album with classic footage, new interviews and much more.

At the center of the auditions presented and shining possibly just a bit more brightly than any of the others was 42 year old Stacy Francis. In response to that pain she has lived with, Stacy Francis delivered a powerful reading of Aretha Franklin's "(You Make Me Feel Like A) Natural Woman." Justin Bieber: Boyz II Men 'Perfect' For Christmas Song

Holiday collabo is called 'Falalalala,' group reveals to MTV News.
By Jocelyn Vena

Boyz II Men
Photo: MTV News

After a photo surfaced online of Justin Bieber and Boyz II Men singer Shawn Stockman in the studio together, Beliebers were pretty excited about the Christmas track they were putting together. Bieber had his musical heroes in mind when he heard the song — called "Falalalala," the group revealed to MTV News — for his upcoming holiday album.

"He thought we'd be perfect for it," Stockman said. "And we went in and locked in."

When the Boyz stopped by to talk about their October album Twenty, Wanya Morris recalled meeting the teen star for the first time way back before they all worked together.

"We met him in the hotel, at the Le Montrose, in L.A. and the dude, he had a cast on at the time," Morris remembered. "And he stepped up and said, 'Oh my God! Boyz II Men, you're my favorite group!' And we're like, 'Oh, OK,' and at the time, we didn't know who he was. He was a new dude, and the next thing you know, he's huge. And I'm like, 'That's the same guy!' "

Bieber was a fan of Boyz II Men from when he was a kid, but there was one track that wasn't allowed in the Bieber household.

"He told us his mom didn't want him to sing 'I'll Make Love to You,' so he'd sneak and go sing it somewhere," Morris said. "It's also good to know we've influenced such a good artist. It's something that makes us feel we've accomplished [something and] we're doing our job, [that] a guy so young and so into his craft [is] influenced by three guys from Philadelphia that love to sing."

What are you expecting from Bieber and Boyz II Men's Christmas collabo? Let us know in the comments!

Nirvana Had 'No Regrets' About Nevermind

Our Nevermind You Never Knew 20th-anniversary coverage continues with part two of a three-part look back at Nirvana in their own words.
By James Montgomery

Nirvana's Kurt Cobain in 1993
Photo: MTV News

"Nevermind was definitely an album we wanted to make. ... We have no regrets, other than maybe the production was too slick."

That was Kurt Cobain in December 1993, after the initial impact of Nirvana's sophomore album had subsided, and the band was trying to slip effortlessly into the promotional cycle for its follow-up, In Utero.

Of course, it went about as well as you would expect. Such is often the case when a band attempts to move on from the shadow of a monolithic, moment-seizing record: It's difficult to talk about anything else.

When it was released, no one had any idea of what Nevermind would eventually become. In fact, in the Geffen offices, they were hoping it'd sell maybe 250,000 copies, and as such, shortages in record stores were common in the months following its release.

But, as you're probably aware by now, the album far exceeded initial expectations (it's since sold more than 30 million copies worldwide), and, in the 20 years since its release, Nevermind has gone on to become an album that not only lends itself to being mythologized, but deserves it as well.

And yet, the album didn't become a household name overnight. It slowly (almost methodically) ascended the charts, finally overtaking Michael Jackson's Dangerous atop the Billboard albums chart in January 1992. And when it did, it signified not only the changing of the guard, but a new era for music. It was a rare moment: A good band was also the most popular. And 20 years later, we're still marveling at that fact.

But, again, Nevermind lends itself to mythology. And with its 20th anniversary just around the corner, we suspect you'll be subject to no shortage of it. So rather than add another anecdote (or 10) to the pile, we figured it would be best to tell the story of Nirvana in the words of the people who knew it best: the band itself.

We've spent the past few weeks mining the MTV News archives to find our definitive Nirvana moments — not just the iconic interviews, but the behind-the-scenes nuggets that show the band as they truly were: funny, irreverent and just a little uncomfortable with their newfound fame (a fact they'd go to great lengths to prove with In Utero).

Earlier Monday (September 19), we published Nirvana's take on their early years, and now, we're going to give you their view on everything that happened in the year following the release of Nevermind.

Here, now, is a band at the epicenter of a true revolution, trying to make sense of everything that happens while, at the same time, attempting to remain true to the scene that birthed them. That struggle is just one of many reasons why, 20 years after they burst into the world, Nirvana remains one of the most fascinating rock bands of all time.

Stick with MTV News all week as we reveal the Nevermind You Never Knew, celebrating the 20th anniversary of Nirvana's definitive album with classic footage, new interviews and much more.

John Wilding Returns For a Second Chance On X Factor

Last year, at the age of 17, John Wilding made it clear to the judges' houses round of X Factor. At that point he was eliminated by judge Dannii Minogue and sent home. Despite the devastating rejection, a year later the now 18 John Wilding has returned with an even more impressive audition than last year. He strode around the stage like a veteran while delivering Jennifer Hudson's "Love You Like I Do." It was also revealed that the teenager has undergone a fairly expensive makeover to look more like a popstar. John Wilding spent 7,000 pounds, including his life savings of 5,000, to have his teeth fixed, rework his wardrobe, and lose weight on the Atkins diet. So far it is all working as he was lauded as having one of the best auditions so far of season 8. The auditions rounds of X Factor conclude tomorrow night, and then the show moves on to the grueling bootcamp.

Oscar Host Eddie Murphy Will Commit '200' Percent

'He's a huge movie star. He has huge international appeal,' producer Brett Ratner tells us on Emmy Awards red carpet.
By Eric Ditzian, with reporting by Josh Horowitz

Eddie Murphy
Photo: Bruno Vincent/ Getty Images

The American public may no longer be convinced about Eddie Murphy's enduring comedic gifts, based on the number of folks who purchased tickets to "Imagine That" and "Meet Dave." Even Eddie Murphy may no longer be convinced about Eddie Murphy's enduring comedic gifts. But one man with no such doubt is Brett Ratner, who is producing the 2012 Academy Awards and who has tapped Murphy to host.

"I think there's no question about it. He's the greatest," Ratner told us Sunday night at the Emmy Awards about Eddie taking on the gig and slaying the crowd. "My first idea was the show had to go in the direction of more comedy with a single host, and there's nobody better on that stage than Eddie Murphy."

"I grew up watching 'Raw' and 'Delirious' and being a big fan of him," Ratner added. "He's a huge movie star. He has huge international appeal. There's nobody better. He's a pro. The guy is a pro."

That's certainly true, even if it has been a couple of decades since Eddie's days as the foulmouthed king of the standup comedy world. Ratner, for his part, appears to be attempting to hit a sort of Eddie Murphy reset button, for years trying to kick-start another "Beverly Hills Cop" film and now coming out this fall with "Tower Heist," a flick that finds the comedian cussing and riffing like it's the '80s all over again. Perhaps for Murphy, in Ratner he trusts. Which is why, according to the filmmaker, Eddie took zero convincing to take on the Oscar gig.

"It's not the kind of job you want to convince anyone to do. They either want to do it or they don't," Ratner told us, adding that Eddie is going to commit more than 150 percent effort to the job. "200, not 150! 200!"

Steve-O Recalls Drunk Biking, On 'When I Was 17'

'Jackass' star, Paris Hilton and Miguel featured on new episode, airing Saturday at 11 a.m. ET on MTV.
By Henna Kathiya

Steve-O

"Jackass" star Steve-O has been wreaking havoc since an early age. Known as MTV's bad boy and quasi-professional stuntman, Steve-O is always pulling an outlandish prank or stunt. At 17, things were no different. In the latest episode of "When I Was 17," airing at 11 a.m. ET Saturday on MTV, Steve-O recalls bicycling while intoxicated.

"My way of getting around in London when I was 17 was my bicycle. One night, I filled my glass with some sort of hard liquor and chugged the whole glass," remembers the co-author of the recently published "Professional Idiot: A Memoir." "Every time I did that, something bad happened."

In typical "Jackass" fashion, after chugging a glass of hard alcohol, Steve-O decided to hop on his bike and ride around London.

"The next thing I remember is waking up on the hood of a parked car, which I had blatantly ridden head-on into," he recalls.

Steve-O claims he doesn't recall the accident. Although he didn't get in trouble for BUI (biking under the influence), he ended up with a mouthful of broken teeth.

"My bike was in this mangled heap. My teeth were broken really majorly," he says.

For more stories from the "Jackass" star's youth, don't miss the new episode of "When I Was 17," also featuring Paris Hilton and Miguel, airing Saturday at 11 a.m. ET on MTV.

Curren$y Echoes Jay-Z's Classic Debut, Ski Beatz Says

'Pilot Talk 1 and 2 are like the Reasonable Doubts of this time,' producer tells Mixtape Daily.
By Rob Markman

Ski Beatz
Photo: MTV News

Behind the Beats: Ski Beatz

Ski Beatz knows talent when he sees it. Early in his career, the platinum producer from North Carolina also doubled as an MC in the 1990s group Original Flavor, but after meeting a young, fast-rapping Jay-Z, he decided to put down the mic and pick up producing full time. He hasn't looked back, crafting fan-favorite tracks for the likes of Hov, Camp Lo, Talib Kweli, Lil Kim and Curren$y.

These days, it's the New Orleans spitta who has him most excited. "I feel like the albums I did with Curren$y — Pilot Talk 1 and 2 — are like the Reasonable Doubts of this time," Ski told Mixtape Daily.

Comparing Curren$y to Jay might seem like a stretch, but having produced four tracks on Jigga's classic debut, Ski has enough experience with both artists to draw the educated parallel. "The music that I chose and gave Curren$y is timeless music; it's gonna be around," Ski explained. "Older people listen to Curren$y because the beats — it kinda takes them back. But younger cats listen to it because of the lyrical content and the flows; because they are able to relate to what Curren$y is talking about.

"That's how it was with Jay: The music that we chose was kinda older-sounding music, but the lyrics was now."

For Ski, meeting Jay was life-changing. It was Brooklyn's DJ Clark Kent who introduced the two when he brought Jay to an Original Flavor video shoot. Dame Dash, who managed Ski and Original Flavor at the time, also was impressed by the up-and-coming Jigga. Together with Kareem "Biggs" Burke, Dame and Jay would go on to start Roc-A-Fella Records. Ski just wanted to make their beats.

"Jay rhymed, and at the moment when I heard him rhyme, I was like, 'This dude gotta get on one of our songs,' " Ski remembered. "He was dope! He was the best rapper I've ever heard in my life.

"He got on [Original Flavor's] 'Can I Get Open,' and after that, me, personally, I decided to stop rapping and just start producing him solely."

Ski eventually would move on from working with Roc-A-Fella. According to the producer, he wanted to build his own Roc-A-Blok production company. Ski would build his discography with Camp Lo, Sporty Thievz and Pittsburgh Slim.

He has recently hooked up with Dame Dash again, and put out his 24 Hour Karate School compilation in 2010 and its sequel, 24 Hour Karate School Part 2, in August. The new volume features Freddie Gibbs, L.E.P. Bogus Boys and Maybach Music Group signee Stalley. The previous album boasted features from Jay Electronica, the Cool Kids, Wiz Khalifa, Curren$y and Smoke Dza.

While nothing can top working with Jay-Z, for Ski, these days it's about discovering what's new. "I love being able to still be relevant and being able to work with these cats: the Wiz Khalifas, the Smoke Dzas, the Dom Kennedys," he said.

Stone Sour have announced that former Dream Theater drummer Mike Portnoy will be joining them behind the kit, subbing in for the group's regular drummer Roy Mayorga, for a one-off upcoming show at the world-renowned Rock In Rio Festival on September 24.

Said Portnoy: “It's my honor and pleasure to be able to help out my good friends in Stone Sour and my brother Roy in their time of need.  It's also an unexpected treat for me to get another visit with some of the greatest fans in the world down in Brazil.”

Stone Sour and Slipknot frontman Corey Taylor said, “We've been waiting a long time for the opportunity to come to South America. This year's Rock in Rio should be fantastic.
