Setting the Brochure on Fire

In the olden days most every company web site was basically an online brochure. You'd hit the home page, click on a relevant navigation item, and hopefully find your way to something and somehow the company would make money out of that. Often the home page was a more-or-less static space for branding and maybe some products for sale. Sometimes, like an unwelcome dinnertime telemarketer, splash pages would get thrown in front of the site.

Web design best practices have progressed quite a bit, but many popular artist and label sites are still generally a news feed, a feature box or two, and if they get super fancy a twitter feed or Facebook like button. Generally they'll still annoy you with the occasional (or not-so-occasional) splash page. Our last site had all of these features.

old home page

While there's nothing particularly wrong with a brochure site, there's the possibility for so much more. In fact, when your home page gets hundreds of thousands of views a month, there's so much better marketing you can do to make the site more relevant to new visitors and get them to look more deeply into your content. With that in mind Jon Satterley wanted a home page that followed the same philosophy as the Huffington Post. Their home page adjusts its design based upon the importance of the news being presented. If it’s huge news you can be assured it gets a huge headline and a huge image.

Now, I’ve always assumed these pages were coded by hand. When Jon brought this up I wanted to take it a step further and create built-in templates the editor could choose from. The site was delivered with four and we can always add in more later if we think them up.

back end choices

The standard headline is the basic one you’ll see every day. We can give a boost to one story and highlight another six. Pictured below is the preview wireframe we use to remind us what the layout looks like.

wireframe

The super headline gives us a larger image area at the top of the page to highlight an important story. Ideally we only use this layout a couple of times a month. Our special headline layout is intended to replace a traditional splash page by dropping all content in favour of one huge image for major events.

special wireframe

On that note, we hate splash pages with a passion. This is a difficult position to be in since so many folks are convinced they are extremely important and useful. Because so many people feel this way and continue to deploy them, that opinion is reinforced. Amusingly even to the point that no matter how much data we can muster to show they aren’t all that useful and very often are harmful, we still get “But Band X did it!” as a response.

Web usability expert Jakob Nielsen presents a good, brief case study of how they are bad in the “Splash Screens” part of this article. You can find many more reasons why they stink dating back over a decade at his site. Essentially, though, it boils down to the fact that most visitors to a site probably aren’t there for whatever’s on a splash page and, while they might find it of interest, it’s more likely to turn them off. Years of everyone using horrible splash pages have trained users of sites to just skip past them or leave entirely, even if the splash page is relevant! If they’re doing that, how is the message actually getting across to them? Usually it’s not. And that’s just a small slice of the reasons not to use them.

We wanted to build a home page that could really meet the marketing goals many people think splash pages accommodate while presenting the user with an experience they’ll actually appreciate and enjoy. I think we’ve accomplished this!

As you can see we now have a malleable home page that can suit the day’s news needs extremely well. We can highlight specific news items, keep others on the page for more time if we want, and no longer need to resort to splash pages to hype important stories.

Heejun Han Soothes Jennifer Lopez After 'Idol' Exit: 'It's OK, Baby'

'Those judges suck, but Jennifer is awesome,' latest 'American Idol' castoff laughs to MTV News.
By James Montgomery, with reporting by Kelly Marino

No joke: Heejun Han got the boot on Thursday night's "American Idol," bringing his odd, occasionally hilarious run to an end.

And while his exit didn't come as a shock to most, it was rather odd that it came on the heels of his best performance, a smooth take on Donny Hathaway's "A Song for You," which earned him praise from the judges and a standing ovation from the studio audience.

But if you think Han is taking all this personally, well, then you probably haven't been paying attention to his antics. Because after his exit, he was all smiles, as MTV News found out firsthand.

"I would be sad if I were to go home when I was [in the] top nine, top seven, top six — I would be so sad anyways," he said. "But, you know, I'm just happy, because I finished really great, and I feel like I proved a lot of things to the world, so I'm kind of in an excited place, actually."

In typical Han fashion, he was still making the most of his time in the spotlight, using our microphone to praise his paramour, Jennifer Lopez — who seemed to be the lone judge determined to save him after he was voted off — and take a few joking swipes at frequent nemesis, mentor Jimmy Iovine.

"Jennifer actually came up to me and said, 'I really, really tried to save you, but they wouldn't listen to me!' and I said, 'It's OK, baby, it happens all the time.' Those judges suck, but Jennifer is awesome," he laughed. "[And] Jimmy Iovine needs to get himself a new pair of glasses and new hat, because he's been wearing that for a fricking long time. No, Jimmy was a great mentor, I respect him a lot. I [just] hope I don't see him anytime soon, because I've been talking a lot of crap about him."

While Han is slightly sad that his time on "Idol" is over, he said he has no regrets about anything he did on the show, mostly because he only auditioned to prove a point: that anyone can accomplish their goals if they put their mind to it. And he'll continue spreading that message.

"I started off this competition to prove to the world that, if you really believe in yourself, you can become someone regardless of who you are ... and that's what I did, that's what I proved," he said. "I never thought I could be a star or anything like that, and I'm not yet, but I want to take this chance to make something out of it, to prove to more people that you can become someone."

Sonisphere UK Cancelled

The 2012 edition of the Sonisphere Festival scheduled to be held in Knebworth, England from July 8-10 has been cancelled. In a statement, the organizers said, "It is with very heavy hearts and much regret that we announce the cancellation of Sonisphere Knebworth 2012.

"Putting the festival together in what is proving to be a very challenging year was more difficult than we anticipated and we have spent the last few months fighting hard to keep Sonisphere in the calendar. Unfortunately circumstances have dictated that we would be unable to run the festival to a standard that both the artists and that Sonisphere's audience would rightly expect.

"We want to express our deepest regrets to the artists and to thank all the staff, suppliers and contractors who worked so hard with us to try and pull off what has proven to be an impossible task and we know how much they share in our disappointment. We also want to send a huge thanks to the Sonisphere fans who stuck by us and we are so sorry that we can't fulfil what we set out to do.

"Ticket holders will automatically receive a full refund direct from their ticket agents."

Black Stone Cherry, Gojira and Within Temptation were scheduled to be part of the festival.

'Game Of Thrones' Season Two: Change Is Coming

Greater face time for Robb Stark and Jaime Lannister means bigger departures from George R.R. Martin's source material in season two.
By Josh Wigler

Richard Madden as Robb Stark in "Game of Thrones" season two
Photo: Helen Sloan/ HBO

While "Game of Thrones" is about as close to a perfect adaptation as it gets, there are some aspects of the Seven Kingdoms of Westeros that remain in the books. Changes between George R.R. Martin's source material and the television series are, like winter, destined to come. Your mileage may vary on whether these differences are a good thing, but the differences exist, like them or not.

As was the case in season one, season two of "Thrones" features entirely new scenes to the "Song of Ice and Fire" saga, while other fan-favorite characters from "A Clash of Kings" — the novel that the show's second season is based upon — have been notably modified or, in some extreme cases, completely cut from the proceedings. Here's a quick rundown of some of the changes you can expect between the books and the show this coming season, but be warned: There are spoilers ahead. No way around them!

More Robb Stark
Despite his status as one of the clashing kings in Westeros, Robb Stark remains largely off the page in the second novel of Martin's series. Not so on "Game of Thrones." Richard Madden, the actor who brings Robb to life, is very much present this season, with his off-page exploits given new live-action life on HBO. It's a divisive choice; so much of Robb's impact hinges on only hearing about him and not actually seeing his legendary acts firsthand. On the other hand, you can't expect Madden to sit out virtually an entire season and remain on retainer for future years. Besides, getting the chance to see what Robb is up to while he's away from the book's narrative is part of the fun of an adaptation, right?

More Jaime Lannister
Likewise, the Kingslayer is a figure largely absent from "A Clash of Kings," thanks to his captivity at the hands of the Starks. But just as Madden can't be put on ice, neither can Nikolaj Coster-Waldau; he must remain on fire! But where Robb's off-page actions are the focus of his new onscreen story, Jaime's additional screen time might actually come from a future book. Fans of the novels know that portions of Jaime's last appearance in "Clash" were already used in the "Game of Thrones" season-one finale, and there are whispers that the character will actually dabble in "Storm of Swords" territory before the show's second year draws to a close.

We Want Our Reeds, We Want Our Reek
On the flip side, some of the characters heavily present in "Clash" are potentially sitting out of season two entirely. Recent rumors indicate that certain key roles — including Meera and Jojen Reed, critical to Bran's story in the books, and nasty sidekick Reek, who has a very interesting place in Theon's world — have not been cast for the upcoming season. Even if the rumors prove true, show runners D.B. Weiss and David Benioff have said previously that certain aspects of the books might get shifted around from season to season — hence bits of Jaime's book-three story moving into season two, or the Reeds moving from book two into season three. As long as there's a future for these characters, we'll take them whenever we can.

What's in a Name?
Asha Greyjoy is dead. Long live Yara! Theon's older sister is not one of the aforementioned casualties of adapting book two for television, but her name is. It's been reported that the character, played by Gemma Whelan, lost her original name due to its similarity to Osha, the wildling girl played by "Harry Potter" veteran Natalia Tena. It's a minor difference in the grand scheme of things, but still the kind of change that could rub "Ice and Fire" purists the wrong way. For me, as long as Yara stays true to the essence of Asha — witty, gritty and incredibly badass — I won't sweat the change too much.

Throwing Dragonstones
All right, let's close with a personal gripe/nerd-out, shall we? Here we go: "Clash" begins with a prologue from the perspective of Maester Cressen, a servant of would-be king Stannis Baratheon's at his home on Dragonstone. It's an excellent introduction to Stannis and his surrounding cast, and it also sets the stakes extremely high for Baratheon's future actions. The Cressen prologue is easily one of my favorite chapters in the entire "Ice and Fire" series, but it's not quite as prominent in the upcoming "Thrones" season premiere. Of course, some things are lost in translation by necessity, and where the introduction to Dragonstone falls a bit short for me, the show more than makes up for it with plenty of fantastic scenes in King's Landing and elsewhere. I'm just hoping that, going forward, the Dragonstone story line remains a prominent, powerful one.

Tell us what you think about the potential changes in the comments section, or hit me up on Twitter @roundhoward!

'American Idol': Who Didn't Get A Standing O?

Five contestants brought the judges to their feet on a night Steven Tyler called 'a magical mystery tour of over-the-top talent and emotion.'
By Adam Graham

The Idols took on songs by their own personal idols on Wednesday (March 28), and time and again they brought the judges to their feet.

Five singers — more than half the field — earned standing ovations from the judges, and if that isn't technically a record, it certainly felt like one. And while several contestants surged forward — most notably Colton Dixon, whom Randy Jackson dubbed "a contender for the title" for the first time — it was Heejun Han who seized the opportunity to wipe the slate clean after last week's flub and realign himself in the "Idol" ranks.

The night kicked off in an odd fashion, with host Ryan Seacrest telling the contestants, "Hunger Games"-style, "may the odds be ever in your favor." And from there it was a veritable bloodbath, with each contestant giving their all and making the "Idol" landscape as difficult to survey as ever.

Han, who was criticized last week for not taking the show seriously following his goofball performance of Billy Joel's "My Life," dialed himself way down Wednesday and gave a straightforward reading of Donny Hathaway's "A Song For You." The result: a standing O, along with praise from the judges who felt he was finally done mocking the proceedings.

"You did it man, you turned it around," Steven Tyler told him, while Jennifer Lopez backed his performance and dispelled any notion he was a fluke contestant by telling him, "You don't make it this far by mistake." Jackson agreed the performance represented a major turnaround for Han. "Finally the Heejun that we selected came back to us tonight," the Dawg said. "Welcome back."

Also bringing the judges to their feet were Joshua Ledet (singing Mariah Carey's version of "Without You"), Phillip Phillips (taking on Johnny Lang's "Still Raining"), DeAndre Brackensick (doing Eric Benet's "Sometimes I Cry") and Elise Testone (who closed the show with Led Zeppelin's "Whole Lotta Love"). The praise was flying around so fast and furious it was almost hard to keep track of; at show's close, Tyler called the evening "a magical mystery tour of over-the-top talent and emotion." (We're not 100 percent sure what that means, but we're pretty sure it's good.)

Ledet's performance was perhaps the evening's most emotional; afterward, Lopez told the Louisiana native, "you're a phenom, you are an absolute angel from Heaven!" Phillips, meanwhile, was told he "owned" his performance of "Still Raining." "You've got big things in front of you," Jackson told him.

Testone wasn't the first "Idol" to take on "Whole Lotta Love"; Adam Lambert memorably upped the song's sexual mojo back in Season 8. Her version didn't have Lambert's same oomph, but Tyler told her, "You made Robert Plant proud tonight" while Lopez said, "that was some real rock star stuff."

Brackensick, meanwhile, earned comparisons to Prince for the high falsetto he delivered while singing "Sometimes I Cry." "You gave Prince a run for his money, man," Tyler told him, while Jackson gave him one of his customary "DeAndre's back in the house!" declarations. Lopez pleaded with America to vote for the curly-haired singer. "People, pick up your phones and vote for DeAndre!" she said. "Please, I need to hear this voice some more!"

Though he didn't get a standing O, Dixon opened the show with Lifehouse's "Everything" and was called "a dream come true" by Tyler. "You sing a song like it should be sung. You make it bleed, you have perfect pitch, and you've got star quality." And with Jackson officially welcoming him into the potential winner's circle, the playing field was again shifted.

Jessica Sanchez, another of the field's leaders, slowed down Beyoncé's "Sweet Dreams" and presented it in more of a ballad fashion. Tyler called it "delicious" and Jackson told Dixon to watch his back because "this girl wants it too!"

Skylar Laine unpacked her shotgun and gave Miranda Lambert's "Gunpowder & Lead" a run through the mud, which was right smack dab in her zone. Tyler called it "over the top" — he meant it as a compliment — and J. Lo applauded the energy in her performance.

Hollie Cavanagh was the only contestant to receive mixed marks from the judges; her version of Carrie Underwood's "Jesus, Take the Wheel" was dubbed "just OK" by Tyler while Jackson told her it "wasn't perfect," and on a night when the judges couldn't stop springing to their feet, that was as close to criticism as things got.

Thursday's "Idol" -— during which one of the singers faces elimination — is set to feature performances by Nicki Minaj and last year's "Idol" champ, Scotty McCreery.

What did you think of Wednesday's "Idol?" Let us know in the comments!

'Dancing With The Stars' Elimination: Martina Navratilova Sent Packing

After her jive, tennis superstar is first to get the boot from season 14.
By Kelley L. Carter

One down, 11 more to go.

There wasn't much shock on Tuesday night's "Dancing With the Stars" elimination show. No one wanted to be the first celebrity sent packing, and after the first nine couples were told they were safe, it came down to an unsurprising pair of duos: Landing in the bottom two were tennis superstar Martina Navratilova and her professional partner Tony Dovolani and pop singer Gavin DeGraw and his partner Karina Smirnoff.

Before it was revealed who would be going home during the first elimination show of the series' 14th season, the tennis pro said that much like when she had a bad tennis match, she was hoping that she could come back next week a victor.

Turns out, she won't have the chance. In her Monday night performance of the jive, she messed up from the start of her routine, and her score suffered for it.

"That was sad because I love your approach to the routine," judge Carrie Ann Inaba told her. Head judge Len Goodman said during the first week of the show that he thought Navratilova was elegant and refined, but didn't think her foxtrot from that first performance was "too careful."

The 55-year-old's poor performance landed her at the bottom of the leaderboard.

"It was an amazing experience. I wish it had lasted longer. I gave it everything I had, I just blew it yesterday. I wish everybody great luck," Navratilova said after being told she was going home.

Miley Cyrus, Liam Hemsworth Not Engaged

'I'm not engaged. I've worn this same ring on this finger since November!' Cyrus tweeted on Monday in response to rumors.

Miley Cyrus is putting those engagement rumors to rest. On Monday (March 26), the Internet was abuzz that Cyrus and her "Hunger Games" star boyfriend Liam Hemsworth were going to tie the knot after photos surfaced of her wearing a large sparkler on her ring finger.

But Cyrus took to Twitter on Monday to shoot down the rumors, saying, "I'm not engaged. I've worn this same ring on this finger since November! People just wanna find something to [talk] about! It's a topaz people!"

Speculation began last week after Cyrus tweeted a photo of her new manicure and the ring. Most recently, she was spotted sporting the large stone on Saturday as the two posed for pictures on the red carpet at Muhammad Ali's Celebrity Fight Night XVVIII in Phoenix.

Even though they won't be planning a wedding anytime soon, the couple, who have been dating on and off since 2009, have a lot to be excited about. "The Hunger Games" had the third-biggest opening weekend of all time, beating out all of the "Twilight Saga" movies when it raked in $155 million.

Hemsworth and Cyrus will next be seen together on an upcoming episode of MTV's "Punk'd," where the former "Hannah Montana" star tells her boyfriend that two naked people have locked themselves in her car, a prank Hemsworth doesn't seem to be too fond of.

"I knew she was doing the show. I honestly thought she had enough respect for me not to do me, and she got me really good," Hemsworth recently told Ellen DeGeneres. "Your girlfriend comes running around and she's yelling hysterically and you see two naked people in your car... I think my instincts were pretty right."

Lil Wayne More Than Answers Mac Miller's 'Question'

'I wanted to make sure I got Wayne on something that was heartfelt,' Mac tells MTV News of Macadelic standout.
By Rob Markman

Mac Miller

Mac Miller hasn't been around very long, but his ever-growing catalog has a lot of noteworthy tunes.

The gold-selling "Donald Trump" is a crowd-pleaser at shows, as is his jump-up-and-down party-starter "Knock, Knock." But Mac's recent Lil Wayne collaboration "The Question" already ranks right up there for him.

"This is one of my favorite records that I've ever done," Mac told MTV News of the Macadelic standout.

Miller surprised fans when he released Macadelic last week. It wasn't the quality of songs that stood out — Mac's fans have come to expect the best from the Pittsburgh MC — instead it was Macadelic's features that stood out to many. With a guest list that includes Kendrick Lamar, Sir Michael Rocks, Casey Veggies, Juicy J and Cam'ron, it was Weezy's multiplatinum name that made folks do a double-take.

Getting Weezy on your mixtape is a no-brainer for any MC with enough clout to pull it off, but Miller didn't want to get the Young Money boss on just any old track. To him, "The Question" was special.

"This song is a real meaningful song to me, man, and I wanted to make sure I got Wayne on something that was heartfelt," he said. "I got him on a record that I was saying something and not just talkin' sh--, so this record right here really kinda deals with a question that I've been goin' through in my own head."

"Sometimes I wonder who the f--- I am," Mac spits to start the record off. The 20-year old MC then goes on to ponder his place in the world over a slow-rolling track produced by Wally West and ID Labs.

"I feel like in a lot of people's lives, at a certain point, you kind of just look in the mirror and try and think about who I am as a person and what am I supposed to do here, what am I doin' with my time," he explained.

Often, Mac is criticized for releasing strictly party records, but on "The Question" he adds some depth to his catalog. Weezy, however, took a different approach, opening his rhyme while sitting in his Bentley, thinking about the plethora of women he has at his disposal. From there, Tunechi goes on about his machine gun, which he claims to treat like an infant, and, of course, his smoke. It's classic Weezy.

"Wayne came in and just killed the verse on the song," Mac exclaimed. "It was perfect to hear him like that."

Kim Kardashian Hardly First Celeb To Be Flour-Bombed

Ryan Seacrest, Lindsay Lohan are among other public figures who have been punk'd in public.
By Kara Warner

Not surprisingly, there has been much ado over the flour-bombing of Kim Kardashian Thursday night at the West Hollywood launch of her new fragrance line, True Reflection. Kardashian is, after all, a generator of countless news headlines — sometimes one of the reality star's generic comments on Twitter is enough to warrant a news item — and the fact that she was attacked with a flour bomb during a red-carpet appearance is certainly newsworthy.

Kardashian is not the first celeb to fall victim to a flour bomb, however. The recent incident brings to mind several others that have involved a few of our favorite public figures taking some flour and other seemingly harmless household items to the face.

Ryan Seacrest The most recent "bombing" incident involved funnyman Sacha Baron Cohen and Ryan Seacrest, Kardashian's E! colleague. Cohen made headlines with his heavily publicized appearance at the Oscars in character as Admiral General Aladeen of his upcoming movie "The Dictator"; he then made waves around the world when he greeted Seacrest for an interview by tossing "ashes" (which turned out to be Bisquick) all over the host.

Bob Dylan Although the beloved rock icon took home Album of the Year for his Time Out of Mind at the 40th Annual Grammy Awards in 1998, the moment that everybody remembers from that night came during Dylan's performance of "Love Sick," when a shirtless man named Michael Portnoy stormed the stage and began . The rocker definitely took notice of the stranger with the words "Soy Bomb" written across his chest, but he barely batted an eye before security came out to remove him.

Lindsay Lohan Lindsay Lohan was the unfortunate victim of a "bombing" by animal-rights activists in 2008. She and then-girlfriend Samantha Ronson were outside a Paris nightclub when three activists used flour to express their distaste for Lohan's fur stole. Lohan has a history with PETA, having been named to their Worst Dressed List in the past.

Tom Cruise During one of his many red-carpet appearances in 2005 for "War of the Worlds," Cruise was surprised by a jokester posing as a journalist who attempted to prank Cruise with a trick microphone that squirted water in the action star's face. Cruise took the man to task for the incident. "Do you like thinking less of people, is that it?" Cruise asked, preventing the man from fleeing the scene by reaching across the metal barrier and holding his arm. "Don't run away," he said. "That's incredibly rude. I'm here giving you an interview and you do that ... it's incredibly rude."

Various Politicians There are almost too many victims to name at this point, but more than a few politicians have been victims of glitter bombs, acts of protest by activists meant to bring awareness to gay rights. The list of victims includes Mitt Romney, Newt Gingrich and Michele Bachmann. Glitter-bombers beware, though: The act carries possible jail time and a hefty fine for those who get caught.

Neon Trees' Underappreciated "Everybody Talks" Hits the Hot 100 With Assistance From a Buick Commercial

TV commercials continue to bring alternative pop songs to the attention of mainstream audiences. Last December Neon Trees released their latest single "Everybody Talks." Although it received positive reviews, the song failed to reach the Billboard Hot 100. It did peak inside the top 20 of the alternative songs chart. Now the group is featured with a snippet of the song in a TV commercial for the Buick Verano that touts the model's use of Pandora music streaming as a feature. As a result sales of "Everybody Talks" have climbed and it entered the Billboard Hot 100 this week for the first time at #74. Neon Trees' second studio album Picture Show is set for an April 17, 2012 release date.

Dharun Ravi 'Didn't Act Out Of Hate' For Tyler Clementi

In exclusive interview with New Jersey Star-Ledger, convicted former Rutgers student says he's 'very sorry' about roommate's suicide.
By Gil Kaufman

Less than a week after a New Jersey jury found him guilty of invasion of privacy and bias intimidation, former Rutgers University student Dharun Ravi, 20, broke his silence about the death of his roommate Tyler Clementi, on Thursday (March 22).

Speaking in an exclusive sit-down interview with the New Jersey Star-Ledger, Ravi said his entire life has changed since Clementi jumped to his death two years ago following the revelation that roommate Ravi had spied on his date with a man in their dorm room.

"I'm not the same person I was two years ago," Ravi said of the immature teenager he once was, admitting he did some "stupid" things and was insensitive to Clementi's feelings. "I don't even recognize the person I was two years ago ... but I wasn't biased," he added. "I didn't act out of hate and I wasn't uncomfortable with Tyler being gay."

Ravi faced 15 counts of invasion of privacy, bias intimidation, tampering with evidence and a witness and hindering apprehension in the case. He was convicted on parts of all 15 counts and is facing up to 10 years in jail and possible deportation in the wake of the verdict.

The Star-Ledger described Ravi's face as "drawn and thin" and his eyes as "perpetually sad" due to stress from the trial. Interviewed in his parent's New Jersey living room, Ravi said that rather than feeling defeated, the verdict, "actually made me feel energized. ... We [family, friends and attorneys] will keep going."

The jury concluded that Ravi had not intended to intimidate Clementi on the first night that he secretly switched on a webcam to watch his roommate's actions. But they felt that Clementi had reason to believe that he was targeted because he was gay (based in part on language used in some of Ravi's text messages to others), and on one count, the jury found that Ravi knew Clementi, 18, would feel intimidated by his actions. The incident brought the issue of cyberbullying to national attention.

Ravi, who is scheduled to be sentenced on May 21, could have avoided a jail term if he had not turned down a plea deal that would have required community service and an admission of guilt on charges of bias intimidation.

"I'm never going to regret not taking the plea," Ravi said. "If I took the plea, I would have had to testify that I did what I did to intimidate Tyler and that would be a lie. I won't ever get up there and tell the world I hated Tyler because he was gay, or tell the world I was trying to hurt or intimidate him because it's not true."

Though the story paints Ravi's upbringing as multicultural and diverse, he said he did not have much experience with gays before leaving home for Rutgers. "One of my friends had a gay roommate and I met a gay kid I liked a lot at orientation," he said. "They were cool. It was no big deal. Now there's a verdict out there that says I hate gays. The jury has decided they know what is going on in my mind; they can tell you what you think."

Hoping to make new friends at school, Ravi opted out of rooming with a high school friend and said he had no problem with Clementi, other than the fact that his roomie was reserved. "Before I went to school, I thought my roommate would be my best friend and we would hang out all the time," he said. "I thought I could expand my circle of friends. But [Tyler] wasn't like that. He was very quiet and every conversation we had just hit a dead end."

When police first came to his room after Clementi was reported missing, Ravi said he suspected it had something to do with the 30-year-old man his roommate had met on a gay dating site; that man, known only as "M.B." during the trial, is the one who Ravi recorded meeting up with Clementi.

"I thought it was something sinister, that maybe he got mixed up with the wrong guy," Ravi said of the police's line of questioning about Clementi's disappearance. "I told one of my friends, 'I wish I recorded [the first incident, on Sept. 19] so I would have an image of the guy [M.B.] to give to the police."

Saying he intended the webcasting of the meet-up as a joke, Ravi said he was just trying to show off for his friends and didn't take into account the ramifications of his actions. "I never really thought about what it would mean to Tyler," he said. "I know that's wrong, but that's the truth." He said he immediately felt bad about his actions and pointed the camera away from the bed during Clementi's second meet-up with M.B. in the dorm room.

"I didn't want to upset him," Ravi said about what was described as a second wave or remorse about his actions. "I never thought he would find out. I figured I would tell him later and we would laugh about it."

But when Clementi found out, he immediately asked for a room change and Ravi said he wanted to talk him out of it, but never got a chance. "One of the most frustrating parts is that he never got my apology," Ravi said, adding that he was "very sorry" about Clementi's suicide. "I texted an apology and when he didn't answer, I emailed him. I told him I didn't want him to feel pressure to have to move and that we could work things out."

Exclusive: Ultra Music Festival Stages Will Be 'Insane'

'We call it the 'Ultra Mega-Structure,' ' fest founder Russell Faibisch says of this weekend's sold-out event.
By Akshay Bhansali

Armin van Buuren is one of many performers set to take the stage at Ultra Music Festival
Photo: WireImage

MIAMI — To say that UMF founders Adam Russakoff and Russell Faibisch and their Ultra Music Festival team have another mammoth dance music get-together on their hands is certainly stating the obvious. This weekend, UMF comes home to Bayfront Park in Miami for the first time since 2005. And the number of attendees walking through the three-day electronic dance music festival, one of America's biggest, has swelled from 150,000 last year to a sold-out 200,000 this year. The lineup is exquisite, as usual — literally an act for every taste.

MTV News learned firsthand just how UMF has tried to build on the sophisticated spectacle they have come to deliver each year when executive producer and founder Faibisch took us on an exclusive tour of the UMF grounds, as crews raced to complete the construction of its eight stages.

"We call it the 'Ultra Mega-Structure,' " Faibisch beamed while introducing us to his Mid-Park Arena, an edifice that resembles an airplane hangar (for the world's largest airplane) in scale. Remarkably, what will be the home of Carl Cox and Friends on Friday, Carl Cox Presents Cocoon Arena and Armin van Buuren's A State of Trance 550 Miami bears circular, perhaps pentagram-ish white screens along it's ceiling and above and behind its DJ booth and stage. And for a good reason.

"Throughout the structure," Faibisch explained, "on the ceiling there's trussing with lighting with LED strips going all along the dance floor, coming back through the DJ booth and onto the stage." Whatever they intend to reflect onto these surfaces will no doubt make sets by Carl Cox, Sven Väth, ATB, Gareth Emery, Sander van Doorn, Dash Berlin and AVB, to name a few, all the more magical. Our next stop struck more of an emotional cord for Faibisch. Klipsch Amphitheater, where UMF screened it's brand-new film "Can You Feel It?" for 7,000 fans Wednesday night, marks the festival's return to Bayfront Park, as things coming full circle.

"The live stage is going to be insane," Faibisch continued. "DJ Shadow is playing. M83. Bassnectar is playing. Pretty Lights. New Order. Kraftwerk, Miike Snow. The last time Ultra was in this amphitheater, Paul van Dyk closed it. The last Ultra [here was] in 2005, and now we are bringing it back to life. So really exciting."

Of course, it's hard not to get excited over a bold move. As MTV News first revealed when interviewing UMF visuals designer Vello Virkhaus, earlier this week: Ultra Main Stage will have an LED roof.

"Most interesting this year is the entire ceiling is all LED," Faibisch revealed as pulleys hoisted the staggering overhanging grid into the air.

And certainly, this new technical development will perfectly complement the dazzling display of talent set to take the Ultra Main Stage.

"What's going to be really exciting are the artists that are going to bring it to life," Faibisch said. "Skrillex, Afrojack and Tiësto to close things on Friday. Saturday, Avicii is going to be closing the Main Stage. First time he's ever closed the Ultra Main Stage. Before him, Justice live."

"Fatboy Slim: This will be his first-ever Main Stage performance at Ultra in the 14 years we've been doing it. And then Sunday, Armin van Buuren, he's going to be closing the Main Stage. We have Kaskade playing. And then, of course, David Guetta has a really special show lined up for us."

"All weekend, its going to be nonstop," Faibisch said. "Artist after artist, really bringing something special."

F---ed Up Fear 'Tokio Hotel Zealots' In Musical March Madness

Toronto band upset Mumford & Sons in round one and face Radiohead in round two; vote now in all second-round matchups!
By James Montgomery

F---ed Up's Damian Abraham
Photo: Getty Images

Of all the first-round upsets in MTV's Musical March Madness tournament (and there were a lot), none was as shocking as Toronto hardcore act F---ed Up's trouncing of top-seeded — and heavily favored — Mumford & Sons. Except to F'ed frontman Damian "Pink Eyes" Abraham, that is. He saw this one coming from the day the bracket was revealed.

"I think anyone who bet on them was a fool, because, let's just be honest, if their fans were really living the Mumford & Sons way, they're probably not the most technologically savvy individuals in the world," he laughed. "It's all based on, you know, the 1920s, so the Internet at that point was just a wireless typing device, and it takes a lot longer to spell out 'Mumford & Sons' in Morse code. How many dips and lines is that?"

Vote for your favorite band, discuss and share on Facebook and Twitter in the MTV Musical March Madness interactive bracket!

Of course, he was joking — he never really thought F---ed Up stood a chance against the mighty Mumford — though, as three years of Musical March Madness has proven, anything can happen. And as the first round wore on, and F'ed closed the gap, Abraham actually started believing. Even if he didn't want to tell anyone.

"Mumford & Sons have sold, conservatively, 100 times as many records as us; and they are a very popular band. ... I mean, they've played with Bob Dylan. I thought it was a sure defeat," he said. "I gotta admit, I really hate sports, but I think everyone at their core has a competitive nature, and as soon as I saw there was a glimmer of hope that we might win, it felt amazing. But, like, I didn't want to start shouting, 'We're going to win!' or anything, because I still wasn't sure, you know?

"And I'll be honest: I never wanted to be in a really popular band,'" he continued. "So it really felt strangely touching, because it was like, 'Wow, this many people cared enough to take time from looking at pornography to vote for me? That's awesome.' "

So now, having dispatched of Mumford, F---ed Up draw #8 Radiohead in round two — voting closes Sunday at midnight ET — with a spot in the Sweet 16 on the line. And, well, let's just say Abraham isn't confident about his band's chances ("It's like a commuter college taking on Duke," he laughed). Though, as Sum 41 proved with their miracle run to the Elite Eight in last year's MMM tourney, stranger things have happened.

Vote for your favorite band, discuss and share on Facebook and Twitter in the MTV Musical March Madness interactive bracket!

And if F---ed Up somehow manage to take down Radiohead, Abraham has already done some advanced scouting on his band's next opponent, Tokio Hotel. And he's sufficiently terrified, to say the very least.

"This is a tournament that's not going to get easier; it's not like we're going to get to the next round and find ourselves facing No Use for a Name. It's just going to get worse as time goes on," he said. "Mumford & Sons? That was just a taste of what's to come; we're dealing with people that have really, really rabid — to the point of being mentally unstable — fans now, and F---ed Up's fans are just a bunch of nerds. We're nothing against these Tokio Hotel zealots. I'm worried they're going to firebomb my house or take out my knees."

MTV's 2012 Musical March Madness tournament has reached the second round. Voting runs until midnight ET on Sunday, March 25, and winners are determined by fan votes, so if your favorite act is still alive, it'll be up to you to guide them to glory. You can rally the troops on Twitter using the hashtag #MMM or by downloading one of our custom badges — but get ready, it only gets more difficult from here on out.

John Legend Wants To Be The 'Best You Ever Had'

G.O.O.D. Music crooner makes a promise in sexy new video for 'Tonight.'
By Rebecca Thomas, with reporting by Kelly Marino

Photo: MTV News

Admit it, you weren't entirely comfortable with John Legend name-calling and hair-tugging on Kanye West's searing "Blame Game." And we get it: The Springfield native's catalog is the work of a perfect gentleman, not an Ohio player. With his latest, "Tonight (Best You Ever Had)," Legend is ready to make up — all night.

Last month, MTV News strutted onto the Los Angeles set of the "Tonight" video, where Legend opened up about what propels the song. The tune appears on the April 10 soundtrack for "Think Like a Man," a big-screen adaptation of comedian Steve Harvey's runaway best-seller, dating-advice book. (No word yet on whether it will also find a spot on Legend's forthcoming full-length, Love in the Future, tentatively due this summer.)

"The whole idea of the song is seduction and swagger and confidence," the G.O.O.D. Music singer/songwriter explained. "We just wanted to put together a video that portrayed that vibe."

Tapping Ludacris to spit another saucy 16 — "Throw you on the grill/ That's 'cause seven days a week, you're my five-course meal" — Legend doesn't so much sing the hook as ooze it. "Baby, Tonight you need that / Tonight, believe that /Tonight, I'll be the best you ever had," he promises.

"The energy of the song is like, kind of quiet confidence," Legend said. "It's kind of what my personality is like anyway and ... this song is kind of exuding that confidence where you're like, 'I do what I gotta do. I don't like to talk about it a lot but I'mma talk about it today,' he added with a naughty grin.

The clip opens with Legend sitting alone on a bed, shirtless and sporting grey slacks and his signature stubble. Before long, he's joined by a lingerie-clad lady-friend. And although scenes from "Think Like a Man" flash on one bedroom wall, the amorous pair seem more concerned with the action offscreen.

"I don't wanna brag, but once we get in there, I'm gon' be the best thing you ever had," Luda told us on set, sampling the chorus. "That's what basically my whole verse is; the whole song, everything John Legend and myself are talking about to all these beautiful women out here."

Legend, who recently became engaged to longtime girlfriend and Sports Illustrated model Chrissy Teigen, turns up the temperature in a way we haven't quite seen from him yet. But it's a welcome departure. Believe that.

What do you think of John's new "Tonight" video? Tell us in the comments!

Snooki promised at the end of the latest season of "Jersey Shore" that she'd be back for more Seaside Heights, New Jersey, shenanigans, and she wasn't lying. MTV News has confirmed that there will be another season of the "Shore" — with mom-to-be Snooki joining her pals.

Although further details about season six of the hit MTV reality show have yet to be released — though we do know "Shore" will tape this summer — the network released a statement hinting that there will be new themes to explore.

"While things will definitely be a little different this time when they hit the boardwalk, their trademark hilarity and family dysfunction will remain the same," an MTV rep teased.

A pregnant Snooki and JWoww are in the midst of filming their own spin-off, while DJ Pauly D's spin-off, "The Pauly D Project," will premiere on March 29. But the crew will reconvene for another summer in the sun in Jersey.

When MTV News caught up with Pauly D recently, he seemed excited to shoot another season that made him and his housemates household names. "Absolutely! I'm there! I love summers on the Jersey Shore," he said. "I love it as a show, and I love it with my roommates. I wouldn't do it without [them], I gotta do it with them. I want all of them [there] and I want the Jersey Shore."

Looking back on season five, Pauly said that if the cast had learned anything, it was how much they loved the Shore after a season spent abroad in Italy.

"This season, we kind of appreciated Jersey more," he said. "So we took advantage of it and everything it has to offer. We were in Italy for so long [last season] that we never were away from the country for that amount of time, so you realize how much you miss gym, tan, laundry. There was no tanning beds in Italy."

The 2012 mtvU Woodie Awards aired on Sunday night highlighting performances from Santigold, Steve Aoki and the show's big winner, Mac Miller, who walked away with two trophies. The half-hour feature, shot in Austin, Texas during the South by Southwest festival was packed with entertainment.

Santigold performed her hit "L.E.S. Artistes" along with the new single "Disparate Youth," while EDM Effect nominee Steve Aoki performed "Emergency," "Steve Jobs," and commanded a guest appearance from Lil Jon on "Turbulence."

Pittsburgh rapper Mac Miller was one of the standouts of the night, taking home Woodie of the Year and Performing Woodie awards, in addition to amping up the crowd with a set that included "Party on 5th Ave," "Donald Trump" and "Loud."

"My fans are dope," Mac told MTV's Buzzworthy blog following his win. "I think the reason they go so hard for me and why they ride for me is because... I think they just see me as one of them. When my album came out, I had fans tweeting me that they bought 10 of them."

Machine Gun Kelly also had a notable night, topping off his title as MTV News' Hottest Breakthrough MC of 2011 by taking home the Breaking Woodie award. After nabbing the trophy, MGK sent out a genuine thank-you to his throng of supportive fans, who cast their votes for his big win. "To all the fans out there who took the time to vote over and over again 'til your fingers got carpal tunnel, thank you!" MGK told Buzzworthy. "Thank you dude. You have made my year. Lace up!"

Other winners included Best Coast, who took home Best Video Woodie for "Our Deal" and Calvin Harris who was honored with the EDM Effect Woodie. The Woodie Awards were held in Austin, Texas following the first-ever Woodies Festival, which featured an additional slew of performances from A$AP Rocky, Machine Gun Kelly, Fun., Chiddy Bang and more.
