Remembering Lisa "Left Eye" Lopes Of TLC 10 Years Later

April 25, 2002 the pop music world suffered a tragedy when 30 year old Lisa "Left Eye" Lopes, 1/3 of the groundbreaking R&B / pop trio TLC perished in a traffic accident in Honduras. At the time of her death the group were working on a fourth studio album 3D and Lisa Lopes had released her solo debut Supernova overseas hoping to launch a solo career. She will be remembered for a fiery creative streak that helped TLC become one of the bestselling female groups of all time. In the course of three albums certified quadruple platinum and beyond, they reached the top 10 on the pop singles chart nine times, with four, "Creep," "Waterfalls," "No Scrubs," and "Unpretty" going all the way to #1. TLC took home four Grammy Awards, twice winning Best R&B Album. The remaining TLC members Tionne "T-Boz" Watkins and Rozonda "Chilli" Thomas have recorded and performed together, but the particular magic and sometimes contentious creative energy is missing. Believe It Or Not: Justin Bieber Unveils Album Cover!

Pop star tweets standard and deluxe album covers for June 19 release, cryptically telling fans, 'expect the unexpected.'
By Katie Byrne

Judging by the cover art for Justin Bieber's Believe album, the 18-year-old pop star is well aware of one of his best assets: his boyish good looks. The cover, which Bieber tweeted on Friday evening (April 27), is simply a black-and-white close-up of his face with the word "BELIEVE" stamped in a yellow caution-tape font underneath.

"Here is the #BELIEVEalbumCover standard version," he tweeted, followed by a second tweet that included a sepia-toned version of the same image: "and this is the DELUXE #BELIEVEalbumCover - #52DAYS - excited? expect the unexpected."

After posting the Believe album cover on Friday, Bieber retweeted one fan's over-the-top reaction to the artwork: "That awkward moment when I almost ran over a lady and hit the car in front of me cuz I saw the #BELIEVEAlbumCover lololol," @julieannxoxo wrote.

Bieber just revealed the June 19 Believe release date last week on "The Voice," also bringing along a teaser from his yet-unreleased "Boyfriend" video. Even after revealing that sneak peek, Bieber was spotted shooting new scenes for the highly anticipated video, kissing a mystery brunette (hey, that's not Selena!) on set.

"The concept of this video, I mean, it's not like a steady concept," Bieber told MTV News while shooting the video back in March. "It's not like 'Justin follows this girl to this spot.' No, it's a bunch of amazing scenes: like a fire scene, we have an ice scene.

"It's kind of like bouncing back and forth," he said. "And then there's scenes of me and just a bunch of girl dancers, and just some great shots, great artistic shots, great shots of me smiling. It's fun."

What do you think of the album cover? Let us know in the comments below!

Pitbull Goes 'Back In Time' On 'Men In Black' Video Set

Mr. Worldwide walks MTV News through his 'Back in Time' music video set.

Not only does the "Men in Black" movie franchise boast great acting and stunning visual effects, each of the three films features a pretty kicking soundtrack as well. For "Men in Black 3," which hits theaters May 25, Pitbull contributes the lead single, "Back in Time."

MTV News caught up with Mr. Worldwide on the Los Angeles set of the "Back in Time" video and he gave us a pretty cool walk-through.

"What we're doing here, to sum it up in layman's terms, is making history," Pit said. "The concept is basically all about the movie. The slogan for the movie is 'Back in Time.' In the record I say, 'In order to understand the future we have to go back in time.' "

The clip not only features "MIB3" movie scenes, it was actually filmed on the movie set, blending the Miami rapper's performance shots seamlessly into Will Smith and Tommy Lee Jones' action shots. "As far as the sets that you see right now, it's just integrating and running parallel with everything that you see in the movie," Pitbull explained.

It was the Fresh Prince himself who recorded the theme songs — 1997's "Men in Black" and 2002's "Black Suits Comin' " — for the first two installments of the "MIB" trilogy. For the upcoming flick, Pit took over and used a sample of Mickey and Sylvia's 1950s classic "Love Is Strange" for inspiration.

Now that he's clocked his first collaboration with Big Willie, Pitbull hopes that they can work together some more. "I would love to follow in Will Smith's footsteps," he said. "We're working on the music for the movie, and hopefully, one day, we'll work in a movie together."

What do you think of Pitbull's "Back in Time" video? Tell us in the comments!

John Mayer Leaves 'Shadow Days' Behind In New Video

Mayer road-trips through America in his Born and Raised clip.
By Jocelyn Vena

John Mayer in his music video for "Shadow Days"
Photo: Columbia

In his new "Shadow Days" music video, John Mayer is leaving behind the bright lights and hustle and bustle of the big city for something simpler.

The video is a road trip, with Mayer dressed up as a cowboy, making his way across the heartland of our great country to just chill out and let it all go. It's a completely uncomplicated premise. Mayer treks through snowy landscapes, small-town motels, deserts and mountains to just find himself and, as the song addresses, let his past go.

He leads an unfussy life in the clip, as he travels from place to place, buying guitars, eating greasy food in diners and rocking a cowboy hat with the sort of sincerity only a few guitar-slinging pop stars can pull off.

Not much happens in the clip, but that's kind of the idea. The story is nothing more than Mayer driving across America. But the sun-drenched message, perhaps, is that Mayer is looking to something simpler these days, given how his personal life has had some turmoil. For a man who has a reputation for breaking starlets' hearts and has battled vocal-cord issues, Mayer seems to want to change his story and redirect the conversation back to his music.

While the video opened with shots of a cityscape in all its artificial glow, it closes on a denim-clad Mayer, walking alone near the side of an abandoned road with just the sun to keep him company.

"Shadow Days" is the lead single from his next album, Born and Raised, due May 22. He had planned to tour in support of the album this spring but had to cancel after he learned he was still battling a granuloma growth on his vocal cords. This video might be the closest things fans will get to a Born and Raised Tour.

Judd Apatow's 'This Is 40' Trailer: Five Key Scenes

Leslie Mann and Paul Rudd are back as Debbie and Pete, picking up in their marriage where they left off in "Knocked Up."
By Fallon Prinzivalli

Ever wonder what happened to Alison's sister and brother-in-law from "Knocked Up"? The dynamic duo of Debbie (Leslie Mann) and Pete (Paul Rudd) had a few key scenes in the film, including Debbie taking Alison (Katherine Heigl) to the club where she meets Seth Rogen's character.

Now Judd Apatow aims to brings us back into the lives of the couple as Debbie celebrates her 40th birthday in "This Is 40." Continually lying about her age as she refuses to accept it, Debbie wonders if she's living the best life possible and decides she and Pete need to make some changes.

"I've made a list," she tells her husband in a scene from the trailer, which was released on Friday (April 27). "It's the 'do-better' list. We're 40 years old, if we don't do it now, when are we going to do it?"

Read on for more on five key scenes from the clip!

Counting the Rings
At the gynecologist's office, the nurses try to figure out if Debbie was born in 1972, '74 or '75 since her paperwork lists a range of dates of birth. When Debbie finally blurts out, "I lie about my age, OK? OK?" her gynecologist responds, "I know how old you are. I'm counting the rings." And with that line, we know typical Apatow humor will be on display in this flick. After that exchange, Debbie decides it's time for a change and makes a list of the top three things she and her husband need to focus on now that they're in their 40s: exercise, the kids' education and being patient.

Exercise Every Day
In one scene, Debbie works with a personal trainer, which allows the filmmakers to bring back Jason Segel's "Knocked Up" character, also named Jason. "I can turn your body into a boner machine," he tells Debbie. When she points out that every woman gives him a boner, he replies, "Don't sell yourself short," before adding in a whisper, "Barb doesn't give me a boner." Looks like Jason's crush on Alison's sister never went away.

Get Involved in School
As Pete confronts a mother whose son is picking on his daughter, "Bridesmaids" star Melissa McCarthy makes a cameo as the confrontational mommy. She tells Pete to get his daughter's meds right and Pete calls her son an animal. When Pete gives her shoulder a little shove, she screams, "You touched my nipple!" When he tells her he merely touched her below her shoulder, she replies, "I have very high nipples!" How Rudd kept from breaking into laughter during that scene is beyond us.

More Patience With the Kids
Another key scene opens with Pete and Debbie's daughters pulling each other's hair as they fight in the back seat of the car. It then cuts to them at the dinner table, where Debbie announces they're cutting back on the girls' gadget use so they'll spend more time outside. She suggests instead that they build a fort, to which the exasperated eldest daughter exclaims, "And do what in the fort?" When Debbie says, "You don't need technology," the youngest daughter holds an iPhone up to her mouth and says, "No technology," as a monkey on the screen mimics her words.

Payback Time
The final scene shows Pete spread-eagle on a bed, holding a mirror up to his crotch trying to look at ... something. (We honestly don't want to know what.) When he asks Debbie to take a look, she asks if they can just keep a small shred of mystery in their relationship. Pete replies, "I saw you have babies — payback time." At least being in your 40s isn't boring.

"This Is 40" is set to hit theaters Christmas 2012.

Maroon 5's "Payphone" Has Biggest Pop Radio Debut For a Group Since *NSYNC's "Pop"

Do you think Maroon 5 are hot? It looks like they are the hottest group at pop radio since the heyday of boy bands more than a decade ago. This week Maroon 5's new single "Payphone" featuring Wiz Khalifa will have the biggest debut on the mainstream pop radio chart, at #21, by a group since *NYSNC roared in at the same spot with "Pop" clear back in June of 2001. "Payphone" also has the highest debut of any group at adult pop radio, opening at #17, in the chart's 16 year history. The song has also been ruling the iTunes sales chart for the past week, so that ensure a very high Billboard Hot 100 debut for Maroon 5. "Moves Like Jagger" was no fluke. Maroon 5 are looking like the hottest pop group of the moment.

The Wanted: A Whirlwind Day With The Boy Band

As they release their U.S. debut, MTV News follows the Wanted to 'Today' before their 'MTV First' premiere of the 'Chasing the Sun' video.
By Jocelyn Vena

NEW YORKThe Wanted happen to be one of the biggest boy bands in the world at the moment. On Tuesday (April 24), the British fivesome released their self-titled U.S. EP with the kind of fanfare only a boy band could pull off as they took over the island of Manhattan for a whirlwind release-day press tour.

MTV News was on hand for every minute of it, from sunrise to sunset, capturing the excitement as the boys made their way across the Big Apple to promote the album. We first met up with the guys at 5 a.m. at their hotel to make our way over to "Today." But, we weren't the only ones who greeted the guys there: Fans had waited all night outside the hotel to catch a glimpse of the Wanted.

Despite the early hour, the guys obliged, signing autographs and smiling for photos with their devotees. Then they hopped into their car and made their way across town to "Today."

So, how do they manage to keep their spirits up at the top of a long day like that? "We prepared for this show this morning by having cups of tea and Cheerios, good for the heart," Siva Kaneswaran told me before they took the stage to perform. "Basically, just psych each other, gaze into each other's eyes and get excited, and that's what gets us through the day."

From there, it was all about greeting even more fans, who had followed the guys from the studio back to their hotel, where the guys regrouped for a bit before more press and appearances. It's the fans though who make the grueling press tour worth all the work, even if they find sneaky ways to show the guys their love.

Recalling a mid-day fan encounter during their downtime, Tom Parker said some fans must have sneaked into the hotel, probably through the front door. "They were following us around. Some girl came up and said, 'Is it too early to buy you a drink yet?' " The answer was "yes" — they did have a full day of press ahead of them!

After their very short break, we were back in the car heading to the Empire State Building, where the guys got their photos taken and did several more interviews to hype up their release.

Their final stop today will be their "MTV First," during which they will premiere their video for "Chasing the Sun," sit down with Sway Calloway to chat about their album and the video, and answer fans' questions.

Well, Sway, I warmed them up for you. I just hope I didn't tire them out.

The Wanted are taking over the Big Apple! Stick with MTV News for updates and exclusive behind-the-scenes photos all day. We'll tag along with the guys on stops like the "Today" show and the Empire State Building before "MTV First: The Wanted" kicks off at 7:53 p.m. ET on MTV and MTV.com. Be sure to tune in for the premiere of the "Chasing the Sun" video and a 30-minute interview with the band!

Boyz II Men: The 'Battle Of The Boy Bands' Forefathers

Boyz up against longtime rivals Jodeci in round one; voting open now!
By John Mitchell, with reporting by Jocelyn Vena

Boyz II Men
Photo: Jeff Fusco/ Getty Images

Our Battle of the Boy Bands got off to a roaring start Monday as fans of new groups like the Wanted and One Direction and legacy acts like 'NSYNC and New Kids on the Block hit our bracket hard to push their favorites on to the next round.

One group that is in it to win it is Boyz II Men, who told MTV News they were among the "progenitors" of the entire boy-band genre. "We were kind of like the progenitors, the torch holders of a lot of the artists, of a lot of the boy bands that came about," Nathan Morris told us.

Highest Chart Achievement
In the mid-'90s, Boyz II Men ruled the charts. That's not hyperbole, either — three of the top-10 longest-running #1 singles in the history of the Billboard chart belong to the band. Their top song, though, is actually a duet, and with 16 weeks spent atop the chart, it's also the biggest single ever: "One Sweet Day" with Mariah Carey.

Boyz II Men are one of just four artists or groups to have held the #1 spot for at least 50 weeks cumulatively. On the all-time list, they fall at #4, behind only (ahem!) Elvis Presley, the Beatles and Carey. (With 47 weeks, Usher falls just short at #5.) Clearly, the band has quite a few chart achievements under its belt.

Standout Video
The Boyz made a series of great videos for their hits "End of the Road," "I'll Make Love to You" and "Water Runs Dry," but for its cameos alone, "On Bended Knee" rises above. In the clip, each band member breaks up with and eventually reconciles with a girlfriend, played by four famous actresses: Victoria Rowell, Renée Jones and, most importantly for nostalgia addicts, Kim Fields (Tootie from "The Facts of Life" and later "Living Single") and Lark Voorhies (that's Lisa Turtle from "Saved by the Bell" to you).

Defining Tune
Regardless of your age, chances are you know every word to many of Boyz II Men's greatest hits, so it's hard to pick just one defining tune. But there really is something special about 1994's "I'll Make Love to You." Discounting their Carey collab "One Sweet Day," the song is the band's biggest standalone hit (14 weeks at #1). The Babyface-written song defines the phrase "power ballad" and won the group a 1995 Grammy for Best R&B Performance by a Duo or Group with Vocals.

Debut Album
These guys got straight to the hitmaking with their 1991 debut, Cooleyhighharmony. Executive produced by Michael Bivins of New Edition and Bell Biv DeVoe, the album introduced the Boyz in grand fashion with the funky R&B jam "Motownphilly" and brought them another hit with "It's So Hard to Say Goodbye to Yesterday."

Biggest Competition
That would most definitely be Jodeci, who in the '90s went head to head with the Boyz on the charts with their similar (if not as internationally successful and chart-topping) blending of R&B and soul.

So, how does the band feel about the competition? Well, they seem to have a lot of respect for their former competitors. Regarding Jodeci, Boyz II Men's Shawn Stockman told MTV News, "It was a mutual respect that we had for those guys and them for us."

After revealing that the two bands once had a bit of a beef, Stockman elaborated that it was really just "friendly competition." "I'm sure they had the same mentality as far as being onstage and trying to outdo us just like we were trying to outdo them," he shared. "They were great artists, and we didn't want to have people talking about [how] they did better than us, just like they probably felt the same way."

Voting in round one of MTV's Battle of the Boy Bands is now open and runs until noon ET on Thursday, April 26. Winners are determined by fan votes, so if your favorite band made the cut, make sure you keep voting. Spread the word on Twitter using the hashtag #BBB and like us on Facebook for updates!

Kim Kardashian Sports Kanye West Earrings On NYC Date

'I don't think it's serious. I think it's too soon,' Khloé Kardashian tells Bravo's 'Watch What Happens Live' of Kim and Kanye's romance.
By Rob Markman, with reporting by Felicia 'The Poetess' Morris

"Meet the Parents," "Ice Cream Date," "Yeezy In Your Ear," those are just some of the songs that Kanye West may be inspired to write after the weekend he and Kim Kardashian shared.

On Saturday afternoon, the new (or maybe not so new) couple was spotted strolling through New York City. Kanye was all smiles as the paparazzi caught them enjoying the spring weather, Kim with an ice cream cone in hand. Later that evening, the pair was spotted in Manhattan's Spice Market, and Kim took Yeezy to dine with the rest of the Kardashian clan. Kim was then photographed yet again wearing 'Ye's initials on her lobes with subtle "K W" earrings.

Kim's sister Khloé appeared on Bravo's "Watch What Happens Live" on Sunday and dished on the lovebirds. "I don't think it's serious. I think it's too soon," Khloé said of her sister and Kanye's relationship.

Kanye and Kim have been friends for a number of years, something that Khloé admires. "Because they're friends for so long, it's so easy," she said of the new power couple. "That's something that I love seeing about Kim, the easiness and how happy she is. It's just more of a great friendship and friendships make the best relationships."

With the next season of "Keeping up With the Kardashians" set to premiere on May 20, everyone is wondering if the multiplatinum rapper/producer will be making an appearance. Not if he doesn't want to, says the reality show star. "No one has to be on camera, it's not like we're driven to slavery," Khloé said. "Everyone has the option, except for us."

Things started to heat up, publicly at least, after Yeezy dropped his single "Way Too Cold" at the top of the month. In the song's lyrics he professes his love for Kim, and the two have been seen gallivanting around NYC ever since.

Adele, LMFAO, and Rihanna Lead Billboard Music Award Finalists For 2012

It is no big surprise that Adele would lead the field, but it might be a little surprising that LMFAO are next in line. Billboard has announced the finalists for the 2012 Billboard Music Awards and Adele is named in 18 categories. Party rockers LMFAO are listed in 17 and next up is Rihanna in 13 categories. The awards reflect Billboard chart rankings in a period that extends from March 1, 2011 through February 29, 2012. The ceremonies will take place and be broadcast live from the MGM Grand Arena in Las Vegas May 20, 2012. Adele, Rihanna, Lady Gaga, Katy Perry, and Lil Wayne will compete for Top Artist, the acknowledged biggest prize of the night. The competitors for Top New Artist are Bad Meets Evil, Big Sean, Foster the People, Scotty McCreery, and Wiz Khalifa.

'N---as In Paris' Producer Hit-Boy Has Plans To Rap

The G.O.O.D. Music producer, who has also worked with Nicki Minaj and Rihanna, tells Mixtape Daily he's 'gonna be dropping some stuff.'

Behind the Beats: Hit-Boy
Here's a challenge: place all of Chauncey "Hit-Boy" Hollis' beats in a single playlist, take a listen and try to find some common threads. Besides the name in the production credits, there aren't too many sonic similarities in Hit-Boy's celebrated productions.

"That's been my whole thing ever since I started producing," Hit-Boy told Mixtape Daily of his musical diversity. "I look up to Scott Storch, like when he came out he was doing Beyoncé, he was doing Chris Brown, he was doing Fat Joe. None of his music sounded alike, but it just sounded like the highest echelon of that genre, and that's what I want to do."

The kinetic bleeps and bloops of the Throne's "N---as in Paris" prompted Jay-Z and Kanye West to record an inescapable rap anthem, while the track for Kelly Rowland's "Lay It On Me" was composed of all the summery sounds that make any pop record enjoyable. The beat for Rihanna's island-inspired "Watch n' Learn" perfectly complements her West Indian roots, the bassy "Come on a Cone" gave Nicki Minaj the rap cred she so eagerly sought on Roman Reloaded, and Kanye West's "Way Too Cold" simply sounds like nothing we've ever heard. Earlier this week, Hit-Boy added another twist with "Goldie," A$AP Rocky's screwed-inspired single.

Hip-hop greats like Dr. Dre, DJ Premier and the Neptunes all have a signature sound, but in his young career, Hit-Boy looks to avoid predictability. "If I'm making a pop record, I want it to sound like a [producer] who only does pop records. If I'm doing a trap beat, I want it to sound like somebody who only does trap music," the G.O.O.D. Music producer explained. "I just want it to sound like the highest quality of whatever genre I'm producing."

A producer's sonic success can be a gift and a curse, for example after "N---as in Paris" hit #1 on Billboard's Rap Songs chart, of course other artists came out of the woodwork looking for Hit-Boy to make a similar-sounding track. "Yeah, I get that, but I kinda like try to stay away from it, I just really want to make good music," he said.

That good music can come in the form of the beat or as a rap. "A lot of people don't know but I rap, so I got some stuff coming out. Just be on the lookout for that," he said. "In the next couple of months I'm gonna be dropping some stuff." Will that stuff be included on Kanye's upcoming G.O.O.D. Music album? "We'll see," Hit-Boy answered sheepishly.

What's your favorite Hit-Boy beat? Tell us in the comments!

Preview Glee's Whitney Houston Tribute With A Capella "How Will I Know"

Next week Glee presents their tribute to the late Whitney Houston with an episode titled "Dance With Somebody." It will be packed with Whitney Houston classics from "I Wanna Dance With Somebody (Who Loves Me)" to "My Love Is Your Love." Since the show already covered "I Will Always Love You," it will not be included in the episode. As a teaser for the episode, an a capella quartet of Mercedes, Santana, Rachel, and Kurt singing "How Will I Know" has been released. It is stellar. Fans may be eager to get the show back to a "regular" episode after two tribute episodes in a row, but this teaser is impressive. Check out "How Will I Know" below.

Levon Helm of The Band Dies At Age 71

It was just recently reported that Levon Helm, best known as drummer and vocalist with The Band, was gravely ill with cancer. He passed away earlier today at the age of 71 taking with him an immense musical talent. Although most identified with the primarily Canadian group The Band, Levon Helm himself grew up in Arkansas listening to a confluence of blues, country and R&B in the 1940s and 1950s. He and musician Ronnie Hawkins moved to Canada and recruited Canadian musicians for a band in the early 1960s first known as The Hawks, and, after Ronnie Hawkins left, eventually The Band. The group backed Bob Dylan while Levon Helm went on a two-year hiatus. After he returned the group came to prominence with their legendary recordings Music From Big Pink, The Band, and Stage Fright. The group's sound laid the groundwork for what would later become known as Americana. The Band's biggest pop hit single was "Up On Cripple Creek" with lead vocals by Levon Helm.

Lionel Richie Likely To Hit #1 This Week With His Album Tuskegee

Until late last week it looked like Adele was going to return to the top of the album chart with her massive hit 21. However, that was before Lionel Richie launched his two hour TV special Friday night on CBS called ACM Presents: Lionel Richie & Friends in Concert. The show feature many of his duet partners from the album including Tim McGraw and Martina McBride. The result was that sales of Lionel Richie's album Tuskegee took off again. Now it is expected to total 125,000 copies for the week while Adele comes in at just under 100,000. This will be Lionel Richie's third solo album to hit #1 and his first since 1986's Dancing On the Ceiling, over 25 years ago. Tuskegee sold almost 200,000 copies in its first week, but that was not enough to overtake Madonna and her album MDNA. Last week Tuskegee fell to #4, but it should rise to the top in this third week of release.

Alice Eve Offers Hint To Her 'Star Trek 2' Role

'The Raven' actress reveals to MTV News she spends 'a healthy amount of time in the makeup chair — though not as long as Spock.'
By Kara Warner

Much like the lock and key that all "Star Trek" plot details were kept under during filming the first time around, the same goes for the untitled "Trek" sequel. We know which key players are back in place, alongside new additions Benedict Cumberbatch, as the unidentified villain, and actress Alice Eve, but we don't know exactly how the sequel's story will unfold.

When MTV News caught up with Eve recently during the press day for her upcoming period thriller "The Raven," we attempted to find out a few more details about what character she might be playing in asking how long she spends in the makeup chair each day before filming.

"I'm a healthy amount of time in the makeup chair — though not as long as Spock," Eve revealed. "We were filming until very late last night, and I know that's all I can say. It's a top-secret operation; it's like a war."

Although Eve is new to the "Trek" family, two of her co-stars are very familiar faces, Cumberbatch and Simon Pegg, with whom Eve worked on "Starter for 10" and "Big Nothing," respectively. When asked how the reunion has been, Eve broke out into a wide grin, saying, "Both of them I've worked with before, and it's a true, true pleasure to see them again. Really fun."

Eve went on to tease that her fans will be surprised by "a few things" about her performance in the film and re-emphasized the fact that she's having a blast on set. "I'm having a lot of fun, and it's a very special experience to be on J.J.'s [Abrams] movies," she said. "He's a real good leader."

The British beauty has equated the atmosphere on set with going to camp or school. "When there's a group of people who you can spend time with and work with and get to know, a real good experience, it's kind of like going back to university or something, when everyone has got the same objective," Eve told MTV News. "There's a lot of energy, and it's a nice thing to be a part of that group. That's the thing that excites me most about it. Obviously, there is a huge legacy there with 'Star Trek' and the fanatics, so hopefully they'll be satisfied."

Brad Pitt And Angelina Jolie: A Timeline Of Their Love

We take a look back at the seven-year relationship between two of the world's biggest movie stars.
By John Mitchell

Angelina Jolie and Brad Pitt in 2007
Photo: Getty Images

That noise you just heard was the heads of celebrity tabloid editors' heads exploding in unison at the news that Brad Pitt finally put a ring on it and proposed to Angelina Jolie.

Rumors of an engagement began to swirl when Jolie was spotted at a private viewing at the Los Angeles County Museum of Art's Chinese galleries on Wednesday rocking quite a sparkler on her ring finger. Pitt's manager Cynthia Pett-Dante confirmed the engagement to People, saying, "It is a promise for the future and their kids are very happy."

The pair have been together for seven years and have six children. Their love story has been documented like crazy by the tabloids, but in honor of their long-overdue engagement, we decided to take a look back at the highlights of their relationship to show you how they got from meeting on a movie set to preparing to walk down the aisle.

» Summer 2004: Pitt and Jolie meet on the set of "Mr. & Mrs. Smith." Rumors of an on-set romance begin almost immediately, though both deny the allegations, saying they are just friends.

» January 2005: Pitt and then-wife Jennifer Aniston announce that they have decided to formally separate after nearly five years of marriage and more than seven years together.

» March 2005: Aniston files for divorce, citing "irreconcilable differences."

» April 2005: Paparazzi photos of Pitt, Jolie and her adopted son Maddox on a beach in Kenya surface, seeming to confirm long-standing rumors that the pair are a romantic item.

» July 2005: Pitt and Jolie pose for a photo shoot for W magazine entitled "Domestic Bliss," portraying them as a family with several children. Though rumors that they were a serious item had reached a fever pitch, they continued to refuse to confirm anything. Following the paparazzi images of the couple together in Kenya, many considered the shoot a major affront to Aniston, as her divorce from Pitt had not yet been finalized.

» July 6, 2005: Jolie adopts her second child, 6-month-old daughter Zahara Marley, from an orphanage in Addis Ababa, Ethiopia.

» October 2, 2005: Pitt and Aniston's divorce is finalized by the Los Angeles Superior Court.

» January 11, 2006: Jolie confirms to People that she is pregnant with her first child with Pitt.

» January 19, 2006: A judge grants Jolie's request to legally change the last names of her adopted children from Jolie to Jolie-Pitt. Pitt's legal adoption of both Maddox and Zahara was granted soon after.

» May 27, 2006: Jolie gives birth to the couple's first biological child, daughter Shiloh Nouvel Jolie-Pitt, in Swakopmund, Namibia. Shiloh's first pictures were sold exclusively to People and OK for $4.1 million and $3.5 million, respectively, and all of the cash was donated to charities benefiting African children.

» October 2006: Voicing his support for same-sex couples seeking equal marriage rights, Pitt tells Esquire magazine that he and Jolie would marry "when everyone else in the country who wants to be married is legally able."

» March 15, 2007: Jolie adopts 3-year-old Pax Thien from an orphanage in Ho Chi Minh City, Vietnam. Because Vietnam's adoption regulations do not allow unmarried couples to co-adopt, Jolie adopted Pax as a single parent, but filed a request to legally change her son's surname from Jolie to Jolie-Pitt a month later.

» May 2008: After much speculation, while promoting "Kung Fu Panda" at the Cannes Film Festival, Jolie confirms that she and Pitt are expecting twins.

» July 12, 2008: Jolie gives birth to a son, Knox Léon, and a daughter, Vivienne Marcheline, in Nice, France. As they did following Shiloh's birth, Pitt and Jolie sold the rights for the first images of the twins jointly to People and Hello! for $14 million (the most expensive celebrity pictures ever taken) with proceeds going to their Jolie-Pitt Foundation.

» October 15, 2008: Jolie ignites controversy after telling The New York Times that she is excited for her children to see "Mr. & Mrs. Smith" because "not a lot of people get to see a movie where their parents fell in love." Both Pitt and Jolie had long maintained that while there was chemistry on the set of "Smith," Pitt did not cheat on Aniston during production and began his relationship with Jolie after they'd separated.

» November 2008: In an interview with Vogue, Jennifer Aniston says that Jolie's comment to the NYT that she and Pitt fell in love on the set of "Smith" was "uncool." "I felt those details were a little inappropriate to discuss," Aniston said. "That stuff about how she couldn't wait to get to work every day? That was really uncool."

» July 5, 2011: Praising New York on passing marriage equality legislation, Pitt reaffirmed to People that he and Jolie will not marry until all Americans are afforded marriage rights.

» September 2011: Pitt finds himself embroiled in controversy after telling Parade, "I wasn't living an interesting life myself. I think that my marriage had something to do with it. Trying to pretend the marriage was something that it wasn't." This was, as usual, scooped up by the tabloids as if he were hurling an insult at Aniston, and much of his "Moneyball" press tour was spent explaining that he was simply at a bad place in his life near the end of his marriage and that his relationship with Jolie reinvigorated him.

» December 2011: Promoting her directorial debut "In the Land of Blood and Honey," Jolie tells Christiane Amanpour that her kids were pressing her to get married. "The kids asked me the other day, and I asked them if it was just because they wanted to have a 'big cake,' " Jolie said. "They see movies that have the people getting married in the movies ... you know, the happily ever after. Shrek and Fiona are married. ... We've explained to them that our commitment when we decided to start a family was the greatest commitment you could possibly have. Once you have six children, you're committed."

» January 2012: Pitt co-signed Jolie's statement that their children were pushing them down the aisle. "We'd actually like to," he told The Hollywood Reporter of marrying Jolie, "and it seems to mean more and more to our kids. We made this declaration some time ago that we weren't going to do it till everyone can. But I don't think we'll be able to hold out. It means so much to my kids, and they ask a lot. And it means something to me, too, to make that kind of commitment."

Those spoiled Jolie-Pitts, always getting what they want!

'Eastbound & Down': The Best F---ing Show On HBO

As Kenny Powers (presumably) rides off into the sunset this Sunday night, we pay homage to HBO's best-kept secret.
By James Montgomery

Danny McBride in "Eastbound and Down"
Photo: HBO

"Stevie, you weak mother----er, you listen to me right now. You have made an ass-ton of stupid choices in Myrtle Beach; this is the moment of truth. Now is not the time to lay on the ground like a bald f---ing baby. Now is the time to be a f---ing man."

That was Kenny Powers on last Sunday's penultimate episode of "Eastbound & Down," moments after learning that recently shorn sycophant Stevie Janowski had lost his son (which would lead to Powers subsequently decking him in the face, hence the reason Stevie was laying on the ground like a bald f---ing baby), and I took the time to transcribe it for two reasons: One, because I love the phrase "an ass-ton of stupid choices." And two, because it was unquestionably the most important scene in the show's three-season history.

Why? Well, for starters, it kicked off a series of events that included Powers and Janowski setting off to rescue KP's kidnapped son (while dressed as Rambo and Freddy Krueger, respectively), a near street-fight, a heartwarming détente between two former foes, a racist "Old South" KIA dealer being immolated and, ultimately, Powers' triumphant return to glory. Secondly, though Powers was giving the speech to Janowski, you got the feeling he was also giving it to himself; after all, he's made "an ass-ton" of poor decisions too — in Myrtle Beach and pretty much everywhere else — and was actually determined to do something about it for once. Thirdly, the speech represented not just the moment when Powers moved from brutish buffoon to genuine hero, but when the show segued into the third and final act of its story, moving from "confrontation" to "resolution."

And finally, it's because the speech marked the exact moment when "Eastbound & Down" became the greatest show on HBO.

Of course, in a typically Kenny Powers-ian move, "Eastbound" waited until midway through its second-to-last episode to make the leap (it all comes to a close this Sunday — at least that's what its creators have said in the past), but rest assured, it's finally done it. Long considered the odd program out at HBO — or certainly the least-discussed (except for maybe "How to Make It in America," though the less said about that show, the better) — thanks to a sweeping third season, it's no longer just the goofy comedy about the dude with the mullet. It has quietly, almost secretly, become a genuinely excellent show: funny, fabulously acted (seriously, both Danny McBride and Steve Little deserve Emmys for their work this year), fantastically shot and edited and scored, unafraid to veer off into decidedly dark territory. It is brave and bold and basically everything you could ask for from a show that started off as a sort of piss-take on former MLB reliever John Rocker's epic fall from grace.

It's less ponderous than "Boardwalk Empire" or "Treme," doesn't contain one ounce of the import "Game of Thrones" carries with it, and is certainly funnier than "Life's Too Short" (even in those aforementioned dark moments). Oh, and it has definitely killed fewer horses than "Luck."

To be fair, "Eastbound" took a while to find its legs. There were standout moments in the first season — Powers' pro-level meltdown ("Get me paid, bitch!"); his slo-mo stroll through the halls of his former middle school, the Black Keys' "Your Touch" blaring in the background; his ecstasy-fueled dance-off, the harrowing and heartbreaking backyard BBQ scene in episode four — though, for the most part, you weren't sure if you were supposed to laugh or wince. Season two, which picked up after Powers left his former flame at a gas station and hightailed it to Mexico, was largely viewed as a disappointment, though we did meet his deadbeat father (played by none other than Don Johnson), and really, as is the case with all great three-act productions, we couldn't appreciate all that had happened until we reached the conclusion. Kenny needed to go Down South, it would now seem, because he needed to bottom out.

And now, finally, we're entering the home stretch. The third season of "Eastbound" has unquestionably been its best, full of shudder-inducing dark comedy (Powers storming into a college classroom to win back the affections of his sorta-girlfriend, a boom-box-aided funeral scene, and a memorable sequence in which he attacks a crowd with bottle rockets while dressed as Uncle Sam) and actually dark moments (Janowski has certainly been through the wringer, to say the very least). Through it all, Powers has only grown as a character, becoming a father to his son Toby, putting the demons of his past to rest, settling scores, and, as of last week, recapturing that old fire. I'm not gonna lie, when he finally uncorked his "You're f---in' out!" on Sunday, I actually leapt off the sofa.

It's a testament to the creative team behind the show — McBride, Jody Hill, Ben Best and David Gordon Green chief among them — that they've managed to craft a story line that has ebbed and flowed but, really, always remained on track. With all the ephemera "Eastbound" tosses our way, they've managed to keep their grand designs hidden, though on Sunday, it became apparent that this show is, at it's very heart, nothing more than a classic bildungsroman, a tale of a protagonist's psychological and moral growth (my good pal Andy Greenwald once referred to it as a "bil-dongs-roman," which, given the show's proclivity for dick jokes, is spot-on).

Through three seasons of topless Jet Ski rides, frat-guy-pleasing quotables and more profanity than Al Swearengen on a bender, "Eastbound" has somehow become an actual show, one with heart and soul and a cast of characters that are cartoonish, to be sure, but unquestionably real. They make terrible decisions, they hurt those closest to them, and yet, redemption is ultimately still within their reach. And in that regard, it has succeeded where any and all its HBO brethren have failed. Which is why it's the best.

With one episode left, I'm not sure how "Eastbound" is going to end. Will Kenny finally put his dreams of a return to MLB glory to bed and become the man (seemingly) everyone knows he should be? Or will he head off into the sunset, ever the gunslinger, looking for one final duel? Either way, it's been a heck of a ride — not to mention an improbable rise, both for Kenny Powers and the show itself. It'll always be an underdog — no one's ever going to put it in the same class as "The Wire" or "The Sopranos" or even "Curb Your Enthusiasm" — but maybe it deserves to be in the discussion.

And to think: It all started with a man with a mind for victory and an arm like a f---ing cannon. How it ends, and how it will be remembered, is anybody's guess.
