Chris Brown 'Should Be Respected,' Bobby Brown Says

'The boy is talented, and you can't take talent away. He's a bona fide entertainer,' veteran singer tells MTV News.

Bobby Brown has been on the road with New Edition over the past few months for the group's 30th anniversary tour, and as the veteran entertainer gets ready to drop his fifth album, The Masterpiece, he's showering praise on contemporary stars like Chris Brown, Trey Songz and Usher who have furthered his R&B legacy.

During the height of New Edition's popularity in the '80s, Brown cemented a bad-boy image that stuck with him throughout the years, sometimes to his detriment. The new generation of R&B singers have faced their own unique challenges after being thrust into the spotlight, and maybe none as obvious as Chris Brown. Still, Bobby Brown thinks the young star isn't doing too badly for himself. "He's good; he's a church boy compared to me," Brown told MTV News matter-of-factly.

"Chris Brown is incredible. [He's] an incredible dancer, incredible singer. I respect him a lot because he's held his head up throughout everything that he's been through," Brown said, addressing the singer's much-publicized assault case against ex-girlfriend Rihanna. "He's only been through a little bit, but the boy is talented and you can't take talent away. Talent is given from God, you can't learn what he does. He's a bona fide entertainer and he should be respected."

Despite the setbacks Chris Breezy has faced, Bobby Brown is confident that he has what it takes to stick around in the long run. "He's still young and he's got a long way to go. I'm 30 years deep into this entertainment thing and I could see him 30 years from now, still doing what he does — flipping and singing and dancing," Brown continued. "And now he's getting ready to do a movie, so he's covering the spectrum of entertainment."

Chris isn't the only millennial entertainer who gets praise from Bobby Brown, though. "Trey Songz is definitely a talented brother, he's a talented writer, talented singer," he adds. "I just love the new generation of R&B singers, I think they're upholding what entertainment is about. I got it from Rick James and Michael Jackson, and I'm just grateful that they're taking what I love, what I'm passionate about, to the next level and keeping it young and fresh."

Usher, who will release his new album, Looking 4 Myself, just one week after The Masterpiece drops on June 5, is also on top of the list. "Before Usher even had a record out, I was training him, I'm surprised I didn't put him out," Brown said. "I worked with him a lot, teaching him different ways of training your body to dance and I'm proud of him. I'm glad he kept everything together."

Brown will continue his mission to entertain the masses with The Masterpiece, which is his first album in 14 years. And although he's got respect for the new crop of singers, he maintains that he needed to fly solo this time around. "This project is about me as an individual and me as far as growth in my life, so I didn't really want to go all commercial with it, and to make it something that became a spectacle." Brown admitted. "This is all about Bobby right now. It's just to get this off my heart and once this is released and people are able to hear it and appreciate it, then I can move forward with my life."

The Masterpiece, is set for release on June 5, led by the single "Don't Let Me Die."

Mac Miller Knows He's 'Really Makin It' Thanks To Krispy Kreme

Mac gives MTV News his take on 'The Baddest,' amateur rapper Krispy Kreme's viral video that features a shout-out of sorts to the Pittsburgh MC.
By Rob Markman

Internet sensations come and go, sometimes with no rhyme or reason. Though they may be elementary, rapper Krispy Kreme has rhymes; it's the reasoning behind "The Baddest," his viral video that has folks scratching their heads.

The clip has amassed more than a million views on YouTube since the end of April. In it, Kreme raps in his basement, bragging of his street cred and sexual prowess, all while brandishing a fake pistol. His partner, Money Maker Mike, doesn't say a word; instead he just stares into the camera, holding a pellet rifle, wearing a light blue Mac Miller T-shirt.

When MTV News caught up with Mac Miller, we asked what he thought of the clip he makes a sort of cameo in.

"I don't know, but that sh-- is hilarious though," he said. "That's my artist. Sike, I'm just playin'.

"I don't know if he's serious or not, but the dude with the Mac Miller shirt on has the rifle from 'A Christmas Story' aimed at the camera all the time and that was tight," Mac said hours before he performed at the Bamboozle Music Festival on May 18.

Clearly a parody, a snot-nosed Kreme taunts, "I bet I got more money than Jay-Z/ Compared to me Jay-Z is lazy/ Plus Beyonc— thinks that I'm cute/ It's OK, Beyonc—, I think you're cute too."

Krispy's second video, "Haters Wanna Be Me" features more of the same tomfoolery. "I been shot about 500 times and I've done about one million crimes," he spits in a slow, amateur drawl.

Once again Money Maker Mike appears in that same Mac Miller tee. "That type of sh-- is cool to me because I'm like, 'Man I'm really makin' it when random big videos on YouTube, they're wearing my clothes," the Blue Slide Park MC said. "That's hella promotion for my clothes."

What do you think of Kripsy Kreme's "The Baddest" video? Let us know in the comments!

The Wanted Are On Target For Third #1 UK Pop Single With "Chasing The Sun"

2012 is shaping up to be a very big year for boy band The Wanted. Earlier this year they achieved a US pop breakthrough with the massive hit single "Glad You Came." Now they are on target to prove they are still one of the most popular of current UK groups with the release of the single "Chasing the Sun," one of the new songs on the North American The Wanted EP. Middle of the week numbers show that "Chasing the Sun" is on target for a #1 debut this weekend on the UK pop chart. It will be the group's third #1 single at home after "Glad You Came" and "All Time Low." The group has released two top 5 albums at home in the UK, and their most recent, Battleground, has been certified platinum. "Chasing the Sun" is also The Wanted's new single in the US and has just recently entered the top 40 at mainstream pop radio.

Madonna Targets Lady Gaga With 'Express Yourself'/ 'Born This Way' Mashup

Pop Queen's inclusion of lines from her 'She's Not Me' makes medley seem more like dig than tribute.
By John Mitchell

Madonna
Photo: AFP/Getty Images

Madonna's diva rivalry with Lady Gaga may be taken up a notch when her MDNA tour kicks off Thursday at Tel Aviv, Israel's Ramat Gan Stadium. In new rehearsal footage, the 53-year-old legend is seen singing a mashup of her "Express Yourself" and Gaga's "Born This Way" that concludes with a few lines from Madonna's copycat-shaming "She's Not Me."

Last year, when Lady Gaga released her hit single "Born This Way," controversy erupted over the song's similarity to Madonna's "Express Yourself." (Never mind that much of the resemblance is rooted in both songs' use of a pretty common disco chord progression.) At first, things seemed cool between the two singers. They'd always gotten along publicly, and Gaga told Jay Leno that M's camp reached out to say all was well in the diva-verse with regard to the songs' similarities (something later denied by Madonna's people).

The whole thing appeared to have blown over until earlier this year, when Madonna was promoting her movie "W.E." and her Super Bowl halftime performance during an ABC News interview. Madonna was asked what she thought of the comparisons, and in response she called Lady Gaga "reductive."

Gaga's been pretty quiet throughout, but it's hard not to wonder if she'll stay that way once word of this latest swipe makes its way to her ears. (Gaga is currently in Asia on her tour, and she was recently forced to cancel a planned show in Indonesia after receiving threats from fundamentalist Islamic groups in the country.)

New leaked footage from rehearsals for Madonna's own road show showcases a reportedly planned mashup of "Express Yourself" and "Born This Way," and while the resemblance between the two songs remains as striking as ever, that's not the real story. Just those two songs layered together could have been fun: The two stars certainly have overlapping fanbases, who no doubt would have delighted in the winking acknowledgement of M's influence on Gaga. But Madonna complicates things by concluding the medley with a few lines from her Hard Candy track "She's Not Me," a song about Madonna being emulated by another woman.

The inclusion of "She's Not Me" makes the medley seem like yet another scathing dig at Gaga. It's unknown whether Madonna was just goofing around during rehearsals or whether she plans to include that final digging refrain throughout her tour.

Is Madonna taking things too far, or are we misreading things? Good-natured ribbing or mean-spirited digging? You tell us in the comments below!

Katy Perry Hits Water Park In New 'Part Of Me' Clip

'When we have a day off, she always likes me to explore something fun with her,' sister Angela Hudson says of Katy in upcoming film.
By James Dinh

's 3-D docu-concert "Part of Me" will showcase the darker side of the pop darling's roller-coaster ride to fame, including her divorce from Russell Brand.

Still, there will be tons of fun thrown in the mix. In between scenes from her 2011 worldwide California Dreams trek, the July 5 film will also feature footage of the singer's family, including a water-park outing with her sister.

In an almost minute-long teaser clip from the film, Katy's older sister, Angela Hudson, talks about how she grew up promising to work with Katy "when she made it big." In between takes of the duo in choir and backstage at concert halls, Angela explains, "My sister, not only does she work hard on tour, but she likes to play hard on tour.

"Anytime we go to a city when we have a day off, she always likes me to explore something fun with her," she continues.

With her hit "Firework" serving as appropriate background music, KatyCats catch a glimpse of the Perry sisters basking in the adventures of a water park. But what would any amusement park be without a little action-ride anxiety? Asked how she's feeling before going on a bungee-jumping ride, the pop star responds, "I feel great. I'm really, really excited about my sister, who is scared of heights."

Unfortunately, Angela doesn't appear to enjoy the ride as much as Katy thought she would, as the older sis offers cameras a frown.

MTV News recently caught up with Perry at the Pepsi Fleet Week "Part of Me" Concert, where the patriotically-dressed songstress told us about how deep the film will take fans.

"It's the most intimate I've ever been. I mean that in a non-sexual way ... I mean it in a vulnerable way," she explained. "And so I'm not scared of it because I think it's important for me, and important these days, for people to not think people in my position are perfect and that if they want to achieve this type of dream or achieve a goal that they have to be flawless. They don't."

What do you think of the new "Part of Me" clip? Share your opinion in the comment section!

Charlize Theron Not Too Hard On Herself As A New Mom

'[Jackson] doesn't understand anything right now, and so he just wants my face to look a certain way,' actress tells MTV News.
By Kara Warner, with reporting by Josh Horowitz

Charlize and Jackson Theron

Given Charlize Theron's colorful, always-entertaining personality, we never know quite what to expect from the actress (other than being consistently entertained by whatever she does in her films, interviews, etc.). We expect the unexpected from Theron. Nevertheless, when news broke that she had adopted a baby boy named Jackson in March, we were pleasantly surprised.

Theron has kept the details of the adoption private, but when MTV News caught up with her recently during the press day for "Snow White and the Huntsman," we asked her about the adjustment associated with first-time parenting and how she plans to keep her potty mouth under control in front of her son.

"A lot of people have sent me these children's books, and there's this amazing book, a best-seller [called] 'Go the F--- to Sleep.' This book was fantastic for me because it made me realize that I don't need to judge myself right now," Theron said of getting used to parenting.

"The whole book is just basically, 'Please, go the f--- to sleep.' [Jackson] doesn't understand anything right now, and so he just wants my face to look a certain way."

Although parenting is a full-time job, we're confident that Theron will figure out a way to be a terrific mother and continue to be a terrific actress. You can catch the Oscar-winner playing Evil Queen Ravenna in "Huntsman," which opens June 1.

Speaking of "Huntsman," don't forget to tune in to MTV and MTV.com for our extra-special Sneak Peek Week, which kicks off Tuesday (May 29) with a screening of "Huntsman" and a very special Q&A with stars Kristen Stewart and Sam Claflin.

Check out everything we've got on "Snow White and the Huntsman."

Linkin Park's 'BURN IT DOWN' Video: Watch It Here!

In the clip for their first LIVING THINGS single, which debuted Thursday on MTV, the band gets intimate ... with fiery results.
By James Montgomery

Linkin Park's "Burn It Down"
Photo: Warner Bros. Records

On the upcoming LIVING THINGS album, Linkin Park veer away from the political territory they explored on Minutes to Midnight and A Thousand Suns, and instead mine decidedly personal topics — relationships crumbling, trust eroding, faith failing. In a lot of ways, it is perhaps the most aptly titled record in recent history.

As proof, look no further than the first single, "BURN IT DOWN," which is full of lines like "I played the soldier, you played the king/ Struck me down, when I kissed that ring," none of which are about empire building or military service. Instead, the song is very much about the give/take dynamics of a relationship, and what happens when it all falls apart.

And the video for the song — which premiered Thursday (May 24) on MTV — follows in the same vein: There are no sweeping shots of battlefields or wretched politicians ... instead, it is a decidedly human thing: just the band, in a room, sweating their collective asses off and pouring their hearts into the music. It is a performance video pushed to the limit, and sure, there are a lot of digital effects added for good measure, but they're used only to highlight the personal flourishes of that performance — the intimately tight close-ups, the pained attention to details — shoot, even when they burst into flames at the end, you have to at least wonder whether they didn't just spontaneously combust ... it's that intense (and intensely personal) of a thing.

So after spending the better part of five years exploring the outer boundaries of what a massively popular rock band can get away with, Linkin Park return home with "BURN IT DOWN" and LIVING THINGS (due June 26), shifting the focus eternally inward. Not only is that bound to make their diehard fans happy, but it makes for a truly interesting new chapter in this increasingly fascinating band's career.

What do you think of the "BURN IT DOWN" video? Leave your comment below!

While Donna Summer was the Queen of Disco, performers and entertainers from all genres reacted to the news of her death Thursday (May 17) with great sadness, noting how much she had impacted the music world as a whole before she died from cancer at age 63.

Music mogul and onetime Summer producer Quincy Jones, who worked with the singer during her Donna Summer era, remembered her on Twitter: ‏"Rest in Peace dear Donna Summer. Your voice was the heartbeat and soundtrack of a decade."

Frequent Summer collaborator, producer and musician Nile Rodgers, remembered his pal, writing, ‏"This may help you understand why i'm still crying. So much love and RESPECT for Donna Summer RIP."

Former Destiny's Child singer Michelle Williams was also floored by the unexpected and tragic passing of the dance-floor icon. "Shocked and saddened at the news of Donna Summer passing away! "she wrote. "Wow!"

Her fellow DC sister, Kelly Rowland, added, "Donna Summer. Icon! Legend! Her voice! Her spirit! Rest In peace, you truly inspired me! I love you!"

Rihanna seemed so surprised by the news, she simply tweeted, "Donna Summer??"

"I remember sitting in the front seat of my mom's toyota while she sang Donna Summer's 'she works hard for the money,' " Ryan Seacrest recalled. "Songs were just classic."

Fellow TV personality Carson Daly sent his condolences to her family. "We lost the Queen of Disco today, Donna Summer, 63- another victim of that bastard, cancer. My thoughts and prayers go out to her family."

"In Living Color" actor Tommy Davidson sent MTV News a statement about the singer's passing: "Donna Summer used disco to bring the most unlikely people together -- blacks, whites & everyone in between. Donna was a role model, the consummate professional. Her guidance and inspiration will forever help me reach new heights as a performer. I cherish the days I toured with her. Love to love you, baby."

Other Hollywood folks remembered Summer, including Kevin Smith. "Damn... donna summer dies at 63. An unforgettable voice from my childhood, beloved by my Mom & brother," he tweeted. "Let's dance the last dance for her."

Share your condolences for Donna Summer's friends, family and fans in the comments or on Facebook.

This Wednesday at 4 p.m., a Chicago veteran and a Harlem rapper on the rise will bring two worlds together on what will undoubtedly be a memorable episode of "RapFix Live." A$AP Rocky will make his return to the red couch with MTV News' Sway Calloway, while Lupe Fiasco makes his official debut on the show.

Since the last time he appeared on "RapFix" with Young Jeezy and Big K.R.I.T. back in November, A$AP Rocky's star has only continued to rise. On the heels of his critically acclaimed Live.Love.A$AP. mixtape and his $3 million record deal with Sony, the Harlem rapper has continued to extend his influence in the hip-hop arena, commanding guest appearances from artists such as Drake, Kendrick Lamar, Waka Flocka and Bun B during his own sold-out shows and rocking festivals like South by Southwest and Coachella.

One of MTV News' 2011 Hottest Breakthrough MC contenders, A$AP is currently at work on his debut album, Long.Live.A$AP., which has already spawned the Hit-Boy-produced single "Goldie" and an accompanying video that was shot in Paris, with the fashionable rapper decked out in his finest Alexander Wang gear. In between his own music and promoting his rowdy A$AP Mob, Rocky still finds time for features, including a recent appearance on Swizz Beatz's "Street Knock" single.

Lupe Fiasco, a legend in his own right, will appear alongside Rocky on the couch, and we won't be surprised if the two rappers bond quickly, as both are known for fiercely championing individuality in their music.

In the next few weeks, the Chitown rapper is expected to release Food & Liquor 2, a sequel to his fan-favorite debut album, Food & Liquor, which has been years in the making. Lupe has confirmed that the project will be a double album, showcasing his work "without industry constraints." Also on the radar is his joint album with Pharrell, which Lupe and the Star Trak producer have already begun recording.

Catch A$AP Rocky and Lupe Fiasco on "RapFix Live" Wednesday at 4 p.m. ET on MTV.com, and be sure to join the Twitter conversation using the hashtag #RapFixLive. Send your questions for the artists @MTVRapFix!

'The Voice' Moving To The Fall

After taking on 'American Idol' over the winter, 'The Voice' will now take on 'X Factor.'

Fans of NBC reality singing competition "The Voice"
will get a double-dose of spinning chairs and clashing mentors this year, as the show is being moved to the fall for its upcoming third season.

The just-wrapped singing competition whose panel is anchored by country star Blake Shelton, Cee Lo Green and jousting judges Christina Aguilera and Adam Levine, will move to the fall, where it will vie for eyeballs with another singing reality show, Simon Cowell's "X Factor." According to Billboard magazine, "The Voice" will benefit from Sunday night NFL promotions in its new slot, where it will run on Mondays from 8-10 p.m. and Tuesdays from 8-9 p.m. The "X Factor" will air on Wednesday from 8-10 p.m. and Thursday 8-9 p.m. Neither show has announced a firm return date.

Unnamed sources close to "The Voice" told the magazine that there are a number of revisions in store for the program that could make it look much different from the first two seasons. Among them could be more air time for the top finalists instead of a renewed focus in season two on the blind audition rounds.

As "The Voice" has grown into a consistent ratings generator for NBC, executives believe it will become a go-to place for labels looking to push their big fall and holiday releases in the fourth quarter during the show's live November and December shows.

It's unknown how the double-dip this year will impact the careers of its stars, as Aguilera is working on new music, Levine and his band, Maroon 5, are preparing to release the new disc Overexposed on June 26 and Green has said he's working on his next solo album and prepping a return from his hip-hop crew, Goodie Mob.

The only hiccup from the "Voice" move is that Cowell may steal their thunder on Monday (May 14) when he is expected to announce that Britney Spears and Demi Lovato will join the judging panel of "Factor" for season two.

Bono's Billion-Dollar Facebook IPO Haul: By The Numbers

You could buy nearly seven million pair of Bulgari Bono sunglasses with the cash.
By Gil Kaufman

U2's Bono
Photo: D. Dipasupil/ WireImage

U2 singer Bono was already an obscenely wealthy man before Friday's (May 18) Facebook IPO
. But thanks to the 2.3 percent stake in the social networking site held by his Elevation Partners investment group (it is unknown how much of the Facebook take is directly held by Bono) it was reported that his nest egg could grow exponentially when Friday's first day of trading on the company's stock is over.

The total haul? More than $1.5 billion
, which is not bad for a day's work.

If those figures are true, he may become the richest rock star on Earth, sitting on a massive pile of green that could allow a man who already had the world at his fingertips to push into a rarified stratosphere that's the envy of the many one-percenters he already counts as friends. According to Rolling Stone the singer, who cannot sell all his shares at once, has pledged to use much of the money raised from his investments to aid charity work in Africa.

Bono addressed the rumors of his (alleged) impending money bomb while speaking to MSNBC's Andrea Mitchell on Friday morning. "Contrary to reports, I'm not a billionaire or going to be richer than any Beatle -- and not just in the sense of money, by the way; the Beatles are untouchable -- those billionaire reports are a joke," he said. "In Elevation, we invest other people's money -- endowments, pension funds. We do get paid, of course. But, you know, I felt rich when I was 20 years old and my wife was paying my bills. Just being in a band, I've always felt blessed. I got interested in technology because I'm an artist, I'm interested in the forces that shape the world, politics, religion, the stuff we've been talking about today. Technology is huge, I wanted to learn about it. People might say that's odd, but I think it's odd if artists aren't interested in the world around them. I'm always chasing that. Facebook are an amazing team, a brilliant team. It's a technology that brings people together."

But if one person were to obtain that windfall, what could $1.5 billion buy you? We broke it down, by-the-numbers:

6.9 million Famous for his signature Bulgari shades, if Bono were to get his hands on the full stash, he could hit the Amazon.com marketplace and get nearly seven million pair for cheap at $215.77 a piece.

12.5 The giant claw stage that U2 schlepped around the world for their record-setting 360 Tour was insanely expensive. With each of the three structures they built coming in at $40 million a piece, Bono could build nine more with the Facebook loot.

300,000 Speaking U2 tours, on their famous 1992 Zoo TV outing, one of the highlights were the blinged-out Trabant cars that were hung from the lighting rigs. The famously low-budget East German cars were never expensive, but if Bono were ever thinking of expanding his car collection, he could snatch up more than 300,000 1989 models for the money.

39.4 million: In the recent documentary, "From the Sky Down," U2 basically admitted that they'd gotten a bit full of themselves by the time their 1988 ode to Americana, Rattle and Hum, was released. If Bono is feeling especially embarrassed about all the cowboy hats and blues discovery of that era, he could try to wipe out some trace of it by buying nearly 40 million Blu-Ray copies of the DVD from Amazon.

Justin Bieber Has Nothing But 'Love' For Carly Rae Jepsen And Usher

'Carly is my artist, and I'm Usher's artist, so it's kind of cool that we're all performing,' Bieber tells MTV News at Billboard Music Awards.

LAS VEGAS — As was expected, Justin Bieber's show-stopping performance of "Boyfriend" at Sunday's (May 20) Billboard Music Awards brought out the squeals and the swag.

When MTV News caught up with Bieber on the white carpet for the awards show, just before his big number, the teenage superstar said his expectations for the evening were relatively simple: He just wanted everyone to have fun and to be able to show off all the hard work he's been putting into his dance moves.

"This performance is going to be fun. I practiced a lot in the dance studio," Bieber said. "I've been working hard, and I can't wait to show the fans what I've been working so hard on."

Since the other members of Bieber's musical family — Carly Rae Jepsen and Usher — were also performing, did the trio discuss any feelings of friendly competition or joke around about which performance would be better than the others?

"[It's] not a competition. It's all love," Bieber said with a smile. "We're all a family. Carly is my artist, and I'm Usher's artist, so it's kind of cool that we're all performing here, together.

For first-time Billboard Music Awards attendee and performer Jepsen, the goal for the night was to remember to take a moment to soak it all in.

"I want to feel happy when I'm onstage," she said. "A lot of times you kind of get caught up in the performance and then you worry and then it's over and you think, 'I didn't even enjoy it.' So tonight, after [having a successful] soundcheck this morning, it's going to be about having fun. It's me and my band, we've got some dancers and some fun lights, it's going to be an interesting show."

Who had the best Billboard performance: Justin, Usher or Carly? Let us know in the comments!

Collective Soul Ne-Yo

Mikael kerfeldt's Favorite Things

Opeth frontman Mikael Åkerfeldt was interviewed by Spin magazine about his favorite things, and some of the answers may surprise even longtime fans!

His favorite place to play? Santiago, Chile: "There are a lot of people coming out and they're fucking crazy. They're so loud. And it kind of detaches you from your role as a musician. You don't really think about what you're playing because you're enjoying the whole thing. The crowds are always good. Most of the night I'm usually just listening to how we're doing as a band as opposed to listening to how the crowd is reacting. But in Santiago it's just crazy."

His favorite food? Italian: "I could eat Italian food every day. In Italy, you can go into pretty much every restaurant and it's going to be decent. When we're on tour — because we're always visiting these countries on tour and I never go on holiday — we're connoisseurs when it comes to food. We're not gonna run into McDonald's, you know?"

His favorite way to unwind at home? Watching his fish: "One, the direct translation would be a 'fire eel.' I asked my daughters to name it but they just call it the eel. I have another big fish — I don't know what they call it in English but it's a big fucking fish that sits on the bottom just hanging out. I was sold when I bought it because I could eat it. When it's too dull to watch, I might just fry it up!"

He also says he's a huge ABBA fan, but honestly, we're pretty sure they revoke your Swedish citizenship if you don't love ABBA. Anyway, read the whole thing!

Hawker Records: A History

In 1988, Roadrunner Records had its offices on Lafayette Street in Manhattan, and was mostly putting out records by European thrash and death metal bands, along with a few home-grown acts like Brooklyn’s own Carnivore. But one of our earliest employees, John Bello, heard something else going on in the New York streets, and felt it was important for Roadrunner to jump into hardcore.

Hardcore was having something of a resurgence in the late ’80s. The earliest bands to be labeled hardcore – Black Flag, Bad Brains, Minor Threat – had all broken up or gone on hiatus, and a wave of younger, tougher acts had come up in their wake. In New York, groups like Sick Of It All, Warzone, and Gorilla Biscuits were luring capacity crowds of shaven-headed young men to Sunday afternoon matinee shows at CBGB, and similar scenes were thriving in Boston and on the West Coast. Bello presented Roadrunner founder Cees Wessels with the idea for a hardcore sub-label, which was called Hawker.

Why Hawker Records? Well, as A&R guru Monte Conner recalls it, the name was the result of a collision between Bello’s New York accent and Wessels’ Dutch accent. “I was at dinner with John and Cees when the idea came about. John said he wanted Cees to start a hardcore label. Cees heard the word ‘hardcore’ as ‘hawker’ and the name was born.”

The first Hawker release was Jaybird, the second album by New York’s Token Entry. The Queens-based group earned a solid reputation through relentless gigging and a terrific live show, and their music combined solid playing with a positive attitude and a good sense of humor. Jaybird is a fun, energetic document of a band at its peak, and still holds up today. “John wanted to bet me money that his first release, Jaybird, would outsell [Sepultura’s] Beneath The Remains,” laughs Monte. “Guess who would have won that bet?”

The label’s second release was Next, the only album by Philadelphia’s Pagan Babies. The group mostly played head-down, blazing punk rock, but occasionally experimented with an early rap/metal sound, as on the song “Fuck You, I’m Punk!” They also paid homage to bands they admired, with covers of Slaughter and the Dogs’ “The Bitch” and Lime Spiders’ “Beyond the Fringe.”

These two studio documents were followed by a live compilation, Free For All. Recorded in April 1989 at CBGB, the album included three tracks each by four bands: Token Entry, Boston’s Wrecking Crew, Rest in Pieces (a band formed by Sick Of It All’s Armand Majidi and Rob Echeverria, later of Biohazard and Helmet) and Orange County, California straight-edge outfit No For An Answer. This album captured all four groups at a peak of energy, and though it’s long out of print, is still highly regarded on punk and hardcore forums and blogs. Video footage of some of the bands’ sets is on YouTube, and can be seen below.

Wrecking Crew made their studio debut on Hawker that same year, releasing Balance of Terror, a bone-crunching album full of the brutal energy the Boston scene was known for. Recalls Mike Gitter, a Boston hardcore scene fixture who'd later become an A&R executive at Roadrunner, “They were an important band for Boston. They definitely bridged the gap between the older Boston sounds as well as more metallic hardcore bands from mid to late ’80s. Kind of like Boston's Cro-Mags. While the older Boston hardcore scene was beginning to fade as bands like SSD, DYS and Jerry's Kids were calling it quits and the likes of The FU's were morphing into Straw Dogs, Wrecking Crew took up the mantle and carried it for another generation of bands.” Wrecking Crew was important to Roadrunner for another reason – Executive VP Doug Keogh recalls, “it was an accident of theirs on the road where we were sued (and wasn't even their fault) that made us develop the tour support agreements and policies that we use to this day.”

Orange County’s No For An Answer, fronted by the outspoken Dan O’Mahoney, were the next group to release a Hawker album. A Thought Crusade built on the band’s existing reputation as part of the Revelation Records roster, but it was also a musical evolution, adding deep melodic bass lines and shout-along choruses to their churning sound. Of course, there was the East Coast/West Coast thing to contend with; Doug Keogh remembers, “I believe that when they played CB's, they were respectfully received by the NYC hardcore crowd…But there was a weird east coast/west coast rivalry at the time - John Bello himself was beat up once on assignment to LA, when he was asked to go see Dawn Crosby and Catalepsy, and did the NY mosh thing, which apparently rubbed some of the local patrons the wrong way.”

The last Hawker release was also the most unique. Jones Very was a project featuring Vic Bondi, former frontman of the well-known Chicago band Articles of Faith. Says Mike Gitter, “AOF was head and shoulders above most of what was going on at the time; they had a broader musical palette and really introspective lyrics. You could call them one of the very first emo bands! Vic had moved to Boston where he was teaching at Boston University and U Mass. He simply got the bug to play again. Jones Very was very much an extension of AOF's ideas.” Jones Very’s debut album, Words and Days, is decidedly not a hardcore album; in fact, it owes a lot more to the arty postpunk of Washington, DC bands like Fugazi or Rites of Spring.

After only these six releases, Hawker Records was shut down. Naturally, that wasn’t the end of Roadrunner’s relationship with the hardcore scene; in 1990, Rest In Pieces put out Under My Skin on Roadrunner proper. And of course, years later, bands like Madball, Hatebreed and even Life of Agony, all of whom had roots in the East Coast hardcore scene, achieved great success on the label. But Hawker was a unique moment, and the albums released under that banner document the sound and energy of that time and place.

Raven-Symone: 'My Sexual Orientation Is Mine'

Raven-Symoné has taken to Twitter to address a National Enquirer report that she is gay. The tabloid published a story this week that the "Sister Act" star is currently dating "America's Next Top Model" contestant, AzMarie Livingston, and that they are living together in New York City.

According to sources, "Raven has lost almost 30 pounds, has done a whole image makeover, and now she is the star of 'Sister Act' on Broadway. She's at a point now where she doesn't care what her family thinks, and she's in love with AzMarie. She's a lesbian and wants to live that way."

The tabloid further reports that the 26-year-old's family does not approve of her lifestyle, however, "she told her parents she loves them, but her home -- especially her bedroom -- is nobody's business, and she was not going to back down, so they needed to accept it, period."

While Raven-Symoné neither confirmed nor denied the speculation on Friday, when she took to Twitter to open up about the rumor, she did make it clear that whatever she does in her personal life is her business.

"I'm living my PERSONAL life the way I'm happiest," she tweeted. "I'm not one, in my 25 year career to disclose who I'm dating. and I shall not start now. My sexual orientation is mine, and the person I'm datings to know. I'm not one for a public display of my life."

She continued that "however that is my right as a HUMAN BEing whether straight or gay. To tell or not to tell. As long as I'm not harming anyone. I am a light being made from love. And my career is the only thing I would like to put on display, not my personal life. Kisses!"

Kanye West Had To 'Get Used To' Big Kardashian Family

'With Kanye I was like, 'Why are you hiding in our pantry in my mom's kitchen?' Khloe jokes about sister Kim's BF.
By Jocelyn Vena

Kanye West may seem like he's already one of the Kardashians, but turns out it took him a minute to warm up to them. According to her sister Khloé, Kim's beau initially experienced some shell shock when hanging with reality TV's first family.

"He said, 'I'm an only child; there's, like, so many of you,' " Khloé recalled in a chat with Ryan Seacrest on Friday (May 18).

Fans will get to see Kanye warming up to the Kardashian crew themselves when E!'s "Keeping Up With the Kardashians" returns for another season on Sunday. But Khloé told Seacrest her husband, Lamar Odom, had similar trouble getting used to her very large family.

"I remember Lamar, at first it took him a minute to get used to us, but now Lamar loves it," she said. "With Kanye I was like, 'Why are you hiding in our pantry in my mom's kitchen?' And he's like, 'There's just so many of you guys, and you guys are all so loud and friendly and talk." And I'm like, 'Get used to it buddy, because I like it.' It's just a lot at one time."

Being an only child like Yeezy is added to his initial discomfort, but he isn't the lone only child the Kardashians have welcomed.

"[My boyfriend] Scott [Disick] and Lamar are only children too," Kourtney shared. "I think we attract only children. I don't think [Kanye] knows what's going on [when he hangs out with us]. Like, what we're talking about, are we being serious? Is this a joke?"

The initial shock of the Kardashians seems to have worn off, though. Usmagazine.com spotted Kanye hanging out with Kim and her family at Kourtney's May 12 baby shower. In one snapshot, a smiling Kanye sits next to Kim, who's playing with her nephew and Kourtney's son, Mason.

Khloé's hubby, Lamar, has also apparently bonded with Yeezy. The pro baller even seems to have his sights set on the music industry. "Lamar raps to [Kanye] all the time. Kim is like, 'You're going to freak this guy out,' " Khloé said. "But it's funny."

Will you tune into see Kanye on "Keeping Up With the Kardashians"? Tell us in the comments!

will.i.am 'Still Has That Fire' On 'This Is Love,' Eva Simons Says

Dutch singer also teases the song's 'mad' video to MTV News.
By Jocelyn Vena

Eva Simons
Photo: MTV News

For his song "This Is Love," will.i.am enlisted Dutch singer Eva Simons to add some powerhouse vocals to the raging party track. The searing dance production is highlighted by Simons' diva-tude as her voice soars over will's creation, full of big chants, bumping beats and dirty synths.

Simons had already proved she had hook potential appearing on Afrojack's 2010 dance-floor anthem "Take Over Control," and given will's history of enlisting female pop singers to add a bit of sexy flair to his songs, Simons was a perfect muse to help shape his latest dance-pop track.

"He is super creative, and we kind of have the same energy: We can't sit still. We were in the studio, and he had this track," Simons recalled to MTV News about working with the Black Eyed Peas mastermind. "And he's like, 'Yo, Eva, would you like to do this song with me?' And we had been recording a couple tracks before, so he knows what I'm capable of and he trusts me, and we don't really know each other for that long, but he trusts me.

"I recorded it," she continued. "And he mixes it straight away from his laptop ... and it's done. That's so beautiful — not only is he super creative and knows what he wants, but he also sees when other people are creative as well. He's not afraid to collaborate."

This particular collaboration also included Swedish House Mafia's Steve Angello. "It's really a club-banger," Simons said, adding that will included "some piano intro in there and violins. ... He's always creative. It doesn't [just] work for the clubs, it works for the radio, it'll also work on a big festival, like him on the piano, some strings, some live drums."

will and Simons recently shot a video for the track, and she had this tease for fans when asked to give some hints: "Fireworks. Just like, 'What world is this? Like, where are we?' and 'What season is this?' " she said. "It's mad. It's pretty awesome."

Much of that awesomeness, she adds, stems from will directing the clip himself. "I'm just surprised. I'm not surprised, actually, 'cause that's him," she said. "He is also a super-geek. I'm a super-geek. I love technology, and he was like, he was directing the video and he was doing the motion-control of the camera and everything. He knows his stuff. It was pretty awesome to see."

Simons continued that it was refreshing to see that even with all his years in the industry, he still loves to do it. "I just admire him," she said. "After all those years he still has that fire, and that's just beautiful. But I feel like — 'cause I was big fan of the Black Eyed Peas, and I still am — and he seems like he's the same guy still that I see before."

Their song is expected to appear on will's long-teased solo album, #willpower, which also features Britney Spears, Jennifer Lopez, Mick Jagger and Nicole Scherzinger. No release date has been set for the album.
