It was an evening of true ups and downs on American Idol, but when the dust settled Stefano Langone shone above the rest. His delivery of the classic "If You Don't Me By Now," originally recorded by Harold Melvin and the Blue Notes and then taken to #1 on the pop singles chart by Simply Red, was near perfect for the soulful classic. Stefano Langone successfully took us into the emotion of the song without seeming overdone. "If You Don't Know Me By Now" is a song that can encourage a singer to overdo the blue mood of the song, but it is control and restraint that are likely to pull the listener deepest and help us understand the singer's pain.
