Yellowcard Return With 'Awesome' New Album

When You're Through Thinking, Say Yes marks band's return since dissolving in 2008.
By James Montgomery

Back in 2006, things were starting to go bad for Yellowcard. They had parted ways with longtime guitarist Ben Harper, under less than amicable terms. They were forced to scrap a run of shows when frontman Ryan Key underwent vocal surgery. Lights and Sounds, the ambitious follow-up to their breakout Ocean Avenue album, had tanked, and the band began taking swipes at one another in the press as a result.

Things only get worse from there. Their next album — 2007's Paper Walls stiffed to such a degree that their label, Capitol, refused to continue promoting it — and by the end of 2008, Yellowcard were left without a label and decided to call it quits.

So, it may have come as a surprise to their die-hard fans when YC announced that they were re-forming in August, with plans to record a brand-new album, to be released on a brand-new label (Hopeless Records) in March. Though, according to Key, the news really shouldn't have shocked anybody. After all, despite what you may have thought, Yellowcard never really went away in the first place.

"We took a break in '08, and it just felt like it was time to step back a little bit, and everybody went off and did their thing," Key told MTV News. "And earlier this year, our drummer, Longineu [Parsons], was the one that kinda started making phone calls, just saying, 'What do you guys think about maybe getting back together?' And then all the rest of us started talking and, uh, it just seemed like the right thing to do."

Of course, given their rather rocky history — not just Harper's departure, but the constantly changing status of long-time (and now former) bassist Pete Mosely — getting the band back together wasn't as easy as a few phone calls. There were things that needed to be said (and unsaid), and they needed to be done face-to-face.

"We definitely sat down with each other and talked about all the things in Yellowcard that had worked and not worked, and what we would need it to be this time around to make it work, and everybody really seemed to be on the same page," Key explained. "The record is just awesome. ... We're so excited about it, and it was because, I think, we did get some of that stuff worked out and talked about and, you know, you're friends for 15 years ... so there's stuff that you gotta work out with each other to be able to keep working together."

And though neither Harper nor Mosely are taking part in the 2010 version of Yellowcard, Key is determined to press on with the core of the band — himself, Parsons and violinist Sean Mackin — intact. And as proof, he offers up the title of YC's new album: When You're Through Thinking, Say Yes a handle he probably couldn't have thought up back in 2006.

"It actually came from a young lady I was trying to, uh, take out for an evening, and she had mentioned that she was kind of seeing someone else, and had to think about it," he laughed. "I wrote her a text message back that said, 'When you're through thinking, say "yes," ' and it just kind of resonated, I guess. As lame as it may be, it's from a text message."

News of Leslie Nielsen's death has sparked sadness and sorrow throughout Hollywood as stars have come forward to pay their final respects. The longtime comedian and actor passed away on Sunday in Fort Lauderdale, Florida, at the age of 84 after being treated for pneumonia.

(For photos of the late funnyman throughout his career, click here.)

Nicki Minaj may be known to most as a rapper, but the Young Money star has always had a knack for the craft of acting, so it wasn't a surprise that she expressed sympathy for the Canadian-born actor's death, tweeting, "R.I.P. Leslie Nielsen ~ one of the funniest and amazing actors of all time."

Fellow comedian Russell Brand remembered the late funnyman with a pun using the actor's iconic line from his 1980 disaster spoof "Airplane!" tweeting, "RIP. Leslie Nielsen. Shirley, he will be missed."

Swapping out jokes for affection, "The L Word" actress Marlee Matlin wrote, "A lovely man and acquaintance passed away today - Leslie Nielsen. What a lovely, funny, talented man. He will be missed. RIP."

"Sad to hear about Leslie Nielsen passing," "American Idol" host Ryan Seacrest said on his Twitter account. "To this day 'Airplane' is still one of my favorite comedies ever."

Skateboard superstar Tony Hawk was grateful for the humor provided onscreen by the actor, saying, "Goodbye, Leslie Nielsen. Thank you for all the laughter. Please pay him proper respect and don't call him Shirley."

Film critic Roger Ebert kept it simple, writing, "Leslie Nielsen, RIP," and posting four film clips, including his screen test for "Ben Hur." And guitarist Slash confessed that "The Naked Gun" star would be dearly missed, tweeting, "RIP Leslie Nielson, one of my all time favorite comedians. U my friend, will be missed big time. Wow, what a loss. Iii|: (," adding, "& don't call me Shirley."

Bella Thorne Poised To 'Shake It Up' On Disney Channel

Actress, dubbed 'the new Miley Cyrus,' wears out her dancing shoes.

Following in the footsteps of Miley and Selena, there's a new starlet poised for Disney-backed stardom: Bella Thorne, star of "Shake It Up."

Thorne is the newest young Hollywood starlet to helm her own show on the network, and many are saying she's got the chops that will launch her into the entertainment stratosphere, just like her "Hannah Montana" predecessor. MTV News caught up with the budding household name, who broke down the premise behind "Shake It Up" and chatted about what it's like being the latest face on the Disney roster.

" 'Shake It Up' is about two best friends, CeCe Jones and Rocky Blue, and they want to live their dreams as professional dancers on a TV show called 'Shake It Up Chicago,' " Thorne explained. "Basically, it's about following your dreams and their journeys and school and friends and everything else."

Thorne, who scored the part after auditioning last fall, said she had to go through a slew of meetings before winning the role. She also sacrificed a beloved item in her wardrobe hoofing it for the part.

"I have these new ballet flats — they're ruined," Thorne complained good-naturedly. "Yup, they're completely ruined from all the dancing we went through."

Like her character, Thorne is tasked with busting moves for her dream job. However, despite landing such a rigorously dance-centric gig, she was a newcomer to mastering choreography on a professional level.

"I've only been dancing since I got 'Shake It Up,' " she revealed. "I mean, I've been dancing all my life, but I never did any classes or anything like that. So [I learned] just watching shows and freestyling."

For Thorne, picking up a few new steps here and there isn't a problem, since she's carved a place for herself as part of the Disney family — an entertainment powerhouse she's proud to call home.

"It feels amazing," she gushed. "You can't really describe the feeling, because I'm so happy and blessed to be here, and the rest of our talented cast have worked so hard on 'Shake It Up.' And we all put all of our heart and soul into every episode, and we just hope that people like it just as much as we do."

Justin Bieber Posts 'It Gets Better' Video

'I just wanted to say there's nothing cool about being a bully,' singer says.
By Gil Kaufman

Justin Bieber has joined the ranks of stars speaking out against bullying. The 16-year-old American Music Award-winning singer recently spoke to talk-show host Ellen DeGeneres about his own bullying experience, and in an "It Gets Better" clip that debuted on DeGeneres' site on Monday, he urged his fans to take action if they see someone being bullied.

In the 20-second video, Bieber, wearing a black T-shirt and backward black baseball cap, says, "Hey guys, I'm Justin Bieber. I just wanted to say there's nothing cool about being a bully. And if you're getting bullied, make sure to tell someone and, you know, it gets better. And if you're a bystander, make sure to step in and, you know, help out."

The clip appeared to have been filmed during Bieber's appearance on DeGeneres' show earlier this month, when he discussed his own experiences with bullying.

"Everybody goes through bullying," he said on the show. "Everybody has, even me. On my YouTube page, there are so many haters. They just say crazy stuff. Like, I'm not mad, I'm 16 and I don't have chest hair. I'm not angry about it at the moment. That will come. People are like, 'Look at him, he puts helium in his voice before he sings.' You just have to laugh at yourself. It's funny." His appearance on the show came shortly after he was reportedly bullied while playing laser tag in Canada in October.

Bieber also had a similar message for those who see bullying going on around them. "There are so many bullies. It goes on so much," he told DeGeneres. "I think that you should ... especially if you are a bystander, you definitely should help out because it could be you next."

In the laser-tag incident last month, a 12-year-old boy allegedly used an anti-gay slur against Bieber after overzealously targeting the "Baby" singer during a heated match.

Bieber joins a long list of stars and politicians who have joined the "It Gets Better" anti-bullying campaign, including President Obama, Secretary of State Hillary Clinton, Ke$ha, Nicki Minaj, Adam Lambert, Aubrey O'Day, Linkin Park's Chester Bennington and Katy Perry, who dedicated her "Firework" clip to the campaign.

Kanye West Sounds Off On Media At NYC Show

After performance celebrating the release of his new album, 'Ye turns defiant.
By James Dinh

Judging by the critical response to his new album, My Beautiful Dark Twisted Fantasy, Kanye West's love/hate relationship with the media has had little impact on how they view his music. But while concluding his secret New York concert on Tuesday night, the hip-hop heavyweight spoke out on his public image.

After the encore of his Bowery Ballroom set, West reflected on the his career. "As you know, it's been an extremely hard year for me," he said. "But getting back to music, G.O.O.D. Fridays, and the album ... I never thought I'd say this, I wanna thank the magazines for perfect scores across the board. I always felt like I could do anything, but now I feel so fearless. To do an album after the year that I had and after all the 'Your career is over,' 'Die, n---a, die,' and 'You'll never make music again,' and to come back and do 100,000 the first day, digital alone, to be slated to do 600,000 in the first week. I don't talk about the numbers but what that number says is that people want me to keep making music and for me to not give up."

The Chicago MC then brought up his contentious "Today" show appearance earlier this month. "But I ain't here to make no mother----ing politics," 'Ye said. "I'm here to make music. I'm not here to talk in no mother----ing interviews, nobody ask me no stupid-ass questions. We have such a great win. Matt Lauer is not a bad guy, I'm sure."

Soon after, West went on to another tricky subject, the Taylor Swift VMA incident. "When you do things like what happened last year, it's disrespectful for everyone that's created," he said to roaring applause. "It's a smack in the face to everyone who tries to do something real. If I wasn't drunk, I would have been onstage longer. Am I the only one who's not crazy here?"

Yeezy went on to speak about former President George W. Bush and why he said Bush didn't "care about black people" in the aftermath of Hurricane Katrina.

"Everyone wants to use people and villianize people, even if you take the concept like George Bush," he said. "There is no leader in history that has been a villain in that way that didn't get killed in war or commit suicide, so any man that lives through it, deserves one moment of redemption. Any man! ... Everyone needs a villain, don't we? We need to blame someone at all times. For me to be considered a racist for stating the blatant truth, an obvious truth ... But the nuisances of my words, because I am very particular with my words, and they're an emotion I felt at that time. It wasn't worded exactly right, but everybody came and said ... 'Oh my God, Kanye, I love you so much. I hated you until you said that. Yeah, now you're speaking for me, but now you said something that represents me.' "

Kanye says his Bush callout was misinterpreted, but he rode the media's wave. "And the whole time, I'm thinking in my mind, that's not exactly what I wanted to say, I was emotional. That was not exactly how I wanted to word it. But I rode it. I rode it. Just as Taylor never came to my defense in any interview and rode the wave and rode it and rode it. That's the way that I rode the wave with the Bush comment. It's not about popular opinion."

After experiencing similar backlash from the media, West said he empathized with Bush over the twisting influence of the media, echoing what he'd said during the interview with Matt Lauer.

With another mention of how the "Today" show "f---ed up big time" for playing the VMA incident during his interview, Kanye said that he appreciates and thanks all those that helped him for the better and worse throughout the past year.

"If you're a real artist, have no fear, say what the f--- you want, do what you want and make what you want," he said. "And if it's meant to be, then people will stand up like the people stood up with 600,000 coming off being the most hated person this time last year. ... And on that note, I love you and on my family that came to help me with the album, that came through tonight, flying in on private jets, everything they had to do to get here, everybody in this audience that sat through this whole thing, I know you got to wake up in the morning. Thank you so much. I love you."

Birdman Delivers Thanksgiving Joy To New Orleans

We rarely see the soft side of Cash Money CEO Birdman, but MTV News caught up with the 5-Star General in his hometown of New Orleans on Tuesday afternoon for his 15th annual turkey giveaway. The event was in Shakespeare Park, across the street from the housing projects Birdman, born Bryan Williams, grew up in. He said he was very happy to be home.

"It feels good to see people that you grew up with, that you've been knowing your whole life and your family," Birdman said. "[They] know more about you than you know about yourself."

He said the drive means a lot to those in the community, not just because of the giveaway, but also because the town is thrilled just to see Birdman and the rest of the Cash Money family.

"They see us on TV so much, but never get to see us [in person]. But for them to see us, shake our hands, tell us they know our momma, they know our daddy, so many that watched me as a kid that tried to keep my head straight when I was younger — it feels great, not just good."

Birdman said Cash Money have been giving away turkeys for 15 years, but every year, it gets more exciting. He said that when they started, it was just to help out those that didn't have anything for Thanksgiving.

"We caught ourselves trying to help the neighborhood, the older folks who didn't have anything," he recalled. "Now it's a different trade for me to come home and get [a reception] like this. It still means the world to me."

What are your Thanksgiving plans? Let us know in the comments!

Nicki Minaj's 'Last Chance' Gave Natasha Bedingfield 'Goose Bumps'

British singer talks about her Pink Friday collabo with the Queens MC.

Very few MCs are touching Nicki Minaj when it comes to stacking collabos in 2010. However, the pink-tressed raptress recently scored a team-up that was unexpected, even for her: a track with British songstress Natasha Bedingfield.

The singer explained to Billboard.com that although she may be known Stateside as the crooner behind the delicate pop anthem "Unwritten," she's well-versed in the hip-hop game. (Incidentally, the pop song became the theme of MTV's "The Hills," a show that counted Minaj among its fans.

"With Nicki, I come from London and we've got a heavy influence in hip-hop," Bedingfield said. "She called me and was like, 'I'd love for you to sing on this. I'm a huge fan,' and I was instantly like, 'I'll do this.' "

Bedingfield gushed that the lyrics Minaj penned made an instant impression on her. In another ironic twist of fate, the songbird laid down her "Last Chance" contribution in the lab of another Minaj collaborator, Eminem, while on the road in Detroit. Bedingfield added that she picked up on the Motor City luminary's energy.

"I heard the song she'd written and it gave me goose bumps. I was like, 'I've got to be on that,' " she recalled. "I was in Detroit, doing some promotion, so I went into Eminem's studio and it was amazing, really catching off Eminem's vibe. He wasn't there, but his studio is great."

Fans can check out Minaj and Bedingfield's collaboration on the lyricist's recently released Pink Friday album, while the songbird's forthcoming album, Strip Me, will be available on December 7.

Within Temptation: 'The Unforgiving' Concept Album Coming March 2011

Roadrunner Records’ Within Temptation is currently in the studio finalizing long awaited fifth studio album, The Unforgiving. This is the band's first concept album, and is based on a comic book by writer Steven O’Connell (BloodRayne & Dark 48).  The release, set for March, 2011, will coincide with the band’s European tour.

Within Temptation guitarist Robert Westerholt comments, "On this album, we've taken a totally different approach. Each song on 'CThe Unforgiving' was written along Steven's narrative. The main characters of the comic are reflected in the characters of our songs. The concept pushed us and gave us inspiration to come up with a new approach to our sound. It resulted in writing our best songs so far.

Renowned for their visual presentation, Within Temptation have asked Romano Molenaar (Witchblade, Darkness and X-men)  to draw the characters and scenery for The Unforgiving.

Sharon den Adel, Within Temptation's stunning vocalist, continues, "We have been big comic fans since our childhood. With this album we felt the time was there to take a new step in our creative development, to take it further and broaden our horizon. Next to the concept of the album, the songs are more diverse than ever before. It was the late 80’s when we started to read comic books, and that sound has certainly has left a mark on The Unforgiving.

The band has also redesigned its website, www.within-temptation.com. The new site will give fans the chance to discover clues about The Unforgiving, as well as uncover unreleased images from the album. The new homepage is a community for the Within Temptation family, and has been engineered to be fully interactive.  Fans can become official ‘reporters’ for their country, writing news stories about Within Temptation or bout other lifestyle and entertainment topics. A very popular new section is WT TV, where the band will provide video updates, like the recent Fan Club Day footage, an event fans from around the world attended.

Within Temptation's symphonic rock, crowned by the crystalline voice of Sharon Den Adel, has brought the remarkable band a decade-long international career. The band has sold more than 3 million albums and DVDs world-wide, has attained Platinum status in The Netherlands, Belgium and Germany, and Gold status in Spain, Finland, Belgium, Germany, Luxemburg, Portugal, and Russia.  Within Temptation has won a host of international awards, including a World Music Award, Golden God Award, and an MTV Europe Music Award.  Numerous sold-out headline tours have seen Within Temptation through performances at major festivals like Loud Park (JP), Download (UK), Pinkpop (NL), Lowlands (NL), Rock Werchter (BE), Rock Am Ring (DE), Bilboa BBK Live (SP), Sweden Rock (SW), Ruisrock (FI), Aerodrome (AT), Gurtenfest (CH), Roskilde (DK) and many more

Nicki Minaj Vents About Being A Female MC In 'My Time Now' Preview

Documentary premieres Sunday at 10 p.m. ET/PT on MTV.
By Mawuse Ziegbe

Nicki Minaj
Photo: MTV

If there's one thing Nicki Minaj does not do in her MTV documentary "My Time Now," it's hold back.

The Pink Friday MC has skyrocketed to the upper echelons of the hip-hop game with a flow that swings from beastly to baby-voiced and a boldly wacky-yet-vampy persona. In the doc, the pink-wigged spitter reveals that her growing success is not just the result of her stacks of scene-stealing features, but also her insistence on being regarded as a musical force to be reckoned with.

"I put quality in what I do. I spend time and I spend energy and I spend effort and I spend everything I have, every fiber of my being, to give people quality," Minaj says in a teaser clip from the forthcoming film, hanging out in a semi-casual outfit, sporting a pale-blue T-shirt and towering Pepto-Bismol-hued wig. "So if I turn up to a photo shoot and you got a $50 clothes budget and some sliced pickles on a mother----in' board, you know what? No. I am gonna leave.

"Is that wrong? For wanting more for myself, wanting people to treat me with respect?" she continues. "But you know what? Next time, they know better. But had I accepted the pickle juice, I would be drinking pickle juice right now."

Minaj also analyzes the double standards she says plague the entertainment industry, explaining that a confident behind-the-scenes manner will often land women unfavorable and dismissive labels.

"When I am assertive, I'm a bitch. When a man is assertive, he's a boss. He bossed up. No negative connotation behind 'bossed up.' But lots of negative connotation behind being a bitch. Donald Trump can say, 'You're fired.' Let Martha Stewart run her company the same way and be the same way. [People will say] 'F---ing old evil bitch!' But Donald Trump, he gets to hang out with young bitches and have 50 different wives and just be cool. 'Oh, Donald, we love you, Donald Trump!' " Minaj quips theatrically.

The "Roman's Revenge" spitter further maintains that, to make it as a superstar, aspiring female artists are expected to juggle a superhuman amount of multitasking.

"When you're a girl, you have to be everything. You have to be dope at what you do but you have to be super sweet and you have to be sexy and you have to be this, you have to be that, and you have to be nice," she says. "It's like, 'I can't be all those things at once. I'm a human being.' "

The soliloquy is another moment in which the MC candidly provides insight, not only into her experience as a lyricist careening toward fame, but her personal views and perspectives as well. In addition to trailing the lyricist as she lays down her debut album, cameras follow the hitmaker on an emotional visit to her native Trinidad and catch Minaj as she opens up about her late grandmother.

"They're gonna meet Onika," she recently told MTV Newsabout the doc. "Everybody sees Nicki Minaj; they're gonna meet Onika. They're gonna hear my story, and it's such an inspirational story, which I never really wanted to tell. 'Cause everyone always feels like you don't want people to know too much. But when I saw what [MTV and production company @radical.media] did, I thought, 'People need to see this.' It reminds you that everyone always feels like this is it, but there's always a light at the end of the tunnel, and I feel like that's what the doc says at the end."

Don't miss the documentary "Nicki Minaj: My Time Now," premiering Sunday at 10 p.m. ET/PT on MTV!

Chris Brown, Bow Wow Rock Free Thanksgiving Concert In Atlanta

Stars perform at event which hooked up locals with a turkey giveaway and carnival.

With another Thanksgiving upon us, celebrities are in the giving spirit. On Tuesday night, Chris Brown and Bow Wow kicked off some pre-Turkey Day festivities with a free concert for their Atlanta-area fans.

Decked out in a slate-gray suit and white kicks, Breezy rocked tracks like his Graffiti joint "I Can Transform Ya," flanked by similarly dapper backup dancers as he turned out his signature athletic choreography.

The "Deuces" singer said he was down to gift concertgoers with a high-octane performance just in time for the holidays.

"It was fun, I had a great time," Brown told MTV News. "I love giving back to the fans and everybody who got to come out who really don't get a chance to come out and go to concerts and things like that."

Also at the event, which was organized by beatsmith Polow Da Don and featured a carnival and turkey giveaway, was Breezy's homey and fellow hitmaker Bow Wow. The Cash Money MC said he didn't need any convincing to rock the crowd alongside his "Shortie Like Mine" collaborator — especially if it meant bringing some holiday cheer to deserving fans.

"It was only right that I came out, supported the homey," Bow said. "He called me, wanted me to come out, perform the record, shut it down, and I told him it was nothing. And on top of that, it was for a positive cause."

Coming down the pike from Breezy is the follow-up to Graffiti, which features the single "Yeah 3X." The singer updated fans about the project in September.

"I'm putting out singles a lot right now, so everything's coming together. But I definitely am gonna to say this and plug it quick: The name of my album is Fame, so make sure you check it out," he said during a stop at an Austin, Texas, radio station.

What are your Thanksgiving plans? Let us know in the comments!

Kanye West Performs Rousing 'Lost In The World' At Thanksgiving Day Parade

Despite appearing to be lip-synching, rapper delivers spirited performance at annual Macy's event.

The Kanye West promo march continues, so naturally the Chicago rapper took his show to the Macy's Thanksgiving Day Parade. Amidst marching bands and balloon versions of Kermit the Frog, SpongeBob SquarePants and Spider-Man, Yeezy performed a rousing though shortened rendition of "Lost in the World" from his just-released fifth album, My Beautiful Dark Twisted Fantasy.

As more than two million people lined the parade route and millions more watched from home, West performed in front of Macy's flagship location near Manhattan's Herald Square on 34th Street at around 11:20 a.m. West kicked his verse from "Lost in the World" along with its chorus atop the Big Apple float, which was adorned with a giant apple and a New York taxicab coming out of a tunnel below it. Wearing a long fur vest, leather pants and a gold V-neck shirt, West delivered a spirited performance despite the fact that he appeared to be lip-synching.

Interestingly, Matt Lauer was one of the NBC broadcast's hosts of the parade. Lauer interviewed West during his infamous appearance on the "Today" show that led the rapper to cancel a scheduled performance on the program. West also compared Lauer to a child abuser during a speech at his not-so-secret show at New York's Bowery Ballroom on Tuesday night. Nevertheless, it was Lauer who introduced West.

Other performers at the Macy's Thanksgiving Day Parade included the casts of the Broadway musicals "Memphis" and "Elf," Jimmy Fallon with the Roots, folk singer Arlo Guthrie and Keri Hilson, who performed on the My Princess Academy float.

Preview Glee's "Hey, Soul Sister" - Another Top 10?

Hot on the heels of "Teenage Dream," one of the most celebrated Glee performances yet, the show will deliver a stellar version of Train's massive hit "Hey, Soul Sister" next week. I smell a bit of deja vu. This one should be a smash, too. For the show's fans this is Kurt's stage debut with the Warblers at his new school, but it's really Darren Criss as Blaine who has pumped Glee songs into high gear. "Teenage Dream" opened at #8 on the Billboard Hot 100. This could go higher. Watch the video below. It is a pleasure from beginning to end.

Beatles Top 2 Million Songs Sold In iTunes Debut Week

Legendary band also moved 450,000 albums in their first week on iTunes.
By Gil Kaufman

The Beatles
Photo: Apple Corps Ltd.

It's only fitting that the biggest band in the world had one of the biggest iTunes debuts in history. Beatles fans waited nearly a decade for the Fab Four's tunes to appear at Apple's digital store, and despite having nearly 50 years to stock up on "Love Me Do" and "Strawberry Fields Forever" in every musical format known to man, they gorged themselves on the band's music over the past week.

According to a Reuters report, the legendary rock group sold more than 2 million individual songs and 450,000 albums worldwide during their first week on iTunes.

iTunes does not provide breakout figures on sales, but Abbey Road came out as the top-selling digital album in the store, coming in at #6 for the week ending November 22. The iTunes-only Beatles Box Set collection was the next-highest-charting collection, landing at #10 on the iTunes albums chart.

Among the many charting singles, "Here Comes the Sun" landed highest but failed to crack the top 10 during a week when nearly 60 Beatles songs found their way onto the iTunes singles tally.

After years of holding out and exchanging lawsuits with Apple Computer, the Beatles became one of the last major holdouts to join the iTunes store, until the big announcement on November 16. Though they easily bested the November 2007 debut of Led Zeppelin on iTunes, which generated U.S. digital album sales of 47,000 and 300,000 songs, the Beatles weren't able to best some contemporary acts, including Rihanna, whose Loud was the best-selling iTunes album in the U.S. last week, followed by the "Glee" Christmas album.

Taye Diggs Remembers Making Poop Song On 'When I Was 17'

'Private Practice' star recalls creating impromptu joint about feces on episode premiering Saturday at 11 a.m.
By Mawuse Ziegbe

Taye Diggs
Photo: MTV News

Taye Diggs has built a reputation as a Hollywood heartthrob, lighting up the screen in everything from "How Stella Got Her Groove Back" to "Brown Sugar." But when the actor was 17, he was less of a hunk and more of a ham, constantly cutting up with his friends.

"When I was 17, we were all performers. Wherever we were, we would always try to put on some kind of a show," he remembers on the latest episode of "When I Was 17," which also features Naya Rivera from "Glee" and NBA superstar Carmelo Anthony, premiering Saturday at 11 a.m.

"They were always, always making up songs and singing them and joking around," Diggs' brother Gabriel recalls.

One time, Diggs and his pals turned someone else's crappy luck into a catchy tune.

"I remember one time there was a fire drill, and me and my boy Shane saw this dude step in some dog doo," he says. "We laugh ... and then, right then, somebody drops a beat."

Shane recreates the beat, flapping and pursing his lips, before continuing the story: "Then [Diggs] joined in, "corn feces!"

"And then it just breaks into a whole song," Diggs recalls of the ditty's inexplicable development.

Then Shane breaks down the joint's loopy lyrics for viewers: "I was walking down the street, rocking to the beat/ Clapping my hands and stomping my feet/ Look at the ground and what do I see?/ Corn feces staring right at me. Corn feces!"

For Diggs, who was 17 in 1988, the impromptu, poop-inspired ode is still hilarious years later.

"Corn feces!" the star proclaims, clapping his hands and cracking up.

"When I Was 17" — this week featuring Naya Rivera, Camelo Anthony and Taye Diggs — premieres Saturday at 11 a.m. on MTV

My Chemical Romance Call Danger Days 'A Missile Directed At Rock And Roll'

'The best way to love rock and roll is to shoot it in the head,' band says.
By James Montgomery

My Chemical Romance
Photo: MTV News

In the four years between The Black Parade and Danger Days: The True Lives Of The Fabulous Killjoys, My Chemical Romance were no strangers to the grandiose statement. It seems that, in every interview they gave, the band found a new way to describe their (then upcoming) album, calling it everything from a "very pure" bit of punk rock to — most famously — "a love letter to rock and roll".

The end result, of course, was Danger Days, an album that is both of those things (and neither), often at the same time. And yet, it has basically been defined within those parameters. So, looking back on it now, do MCR regret anything they said in the lead-up to the album?

Not really.

"It makes me laugh when I [read it now]," frontman Gerard Way said, smiling.

"Part of the problem was: We tried to define the record before we made the record. And it's not all our fault," guitarist Frank Iero added, "because everyone kept asking us, 'Oh, what's it going to be?' And when we said, 'Oh, we don't know,' they're like, 'Well, whadaya mean? What's it going to be? Can you speculate?' And it's like, 'Well, it's going to be this,' and when we found out what that is, it changed."

And that change was, of course, necessary. Both for the band's survival and the scope of the new album. In retrospect, MCR stand by everything they said about Danger Days, because, really, deep down in its chrome-plated heart, it still is "a love letter" to American rock and roll.

It's just written from My Chemical Romance's rather-unique perspective.

"At first, we said, 'It's a love letter to rock and roll,' and we found out that the best way to love rock and roll is to shoot it in the head," Iero said. "So we made a record that was like a missile directed at rock and roll.

"It just started to change and evolve, and then the band evolved at the same time. And I think that's the way you have to make a record: in a very organic way."

What do you think of Danger Days? Give us your review in the comments!

Soul Train Awards Hosts Terrence Howard, Taraji P. Henson Talk Legacy

'This is passion, this is love, this is music right here,' crooner Ray J says of awards show, which airs Sunday on BET.

Decades after the groovy soul-music showcase "Soul Train" arrived on television sets across the nation, the 2010 Soul Train Awards are keeping the phenomenon's legacy on track by spotlighting a new generation of R&B voices.

This year's show will air Sunday, November 28, on BET and Centric, and MTV News hit the red carpet before the taping of the event to check in with some of the most respected songsmiths around today about "Soul Train" 's cultural impact.

"This is the platform for urban music and to be here today, for it to have so much longevity, this is it," "Sexy Can I" crooner Ray J said. "This is passion, this is love, this is music right here."

"The Soul Train Awards is history, man," hitmaking songwriter Sean Garrett added.

Rising R&B face Melanie Fiona agreed, acknowledging the longstanding influence of the iconic production.

"Soul Train Awards are great," she smiled. "They come with a lot of history. They come with a lot of celebration of great music. It's a great event and beautiful people, beautiful night."

For host Taraji P. Henson, the original television broadcast reminds the Hollywood veteran of "good times," and was a cultural touchstone for "The Curious Case of Benjamin Button" actress.

"I just remember learning how to dress and how to dance and wear my hair from 'Soul Train,' " Henson recalled fondly. "That's where I got all my fashion tips."

An array of inventive soul stars will hit the stage at this year's event, including Bruno Mars, Cee Lo, Chrisette Michele, R. Kelly, Keyshia Cole, Ne-Yo and Erykah Badu. R&B luminaries Anita Baker and Ron Isley will be honored as Soul Train Awards Legends.

Detroit soul star Dwele chatted about the enduring legacy of the enterprise, which remained on the air for 37 years and began dishing out coveted hardware in a separate awards show in the '80s.

" 'Soul Train,' period, is music. It's our music from back in the day and it's still relevant currently, and that's a beautiful thing," he said.

Co-host Terrence Howard, who returned with Henson to helm the event once again, maintained that the "Soul Train" phenomenon transcends music and reflects the game-changing strides made by African-Americans over the last few decades.

"It reminds me of the advancement that black people have made over the years 'cause 'Soul Train' really was the beginning of that Black Power movement when we actually could see ourselves. And to have an awards show based upon that 'Soul Train,' it's headed somewhere."

Who are you looking forward to checking out at this year's Soul Train Awards? Let us know in the comments!

Emma Stone Is The Actress We're Most Thankful For In 2010

With winning turn in 'Easy A,' 'Spider-Man' casting and 'SNL' hosting gig, the 22-year-old has had quite a year.
By Eric Ditzian

As MTV News' Thankful Week draws to a close, we begin to cast our gaze away from the big screen and towards tables soon to be the scene of turkey-crazed feasts. But we have one last honor to bestow: the actress we're most thankful for in 2010.

The winner is none other than Emma Stone, a move that completes a nifty "Spider-Man" double win, as we also honored Andrew Garfield — who's stepping into the role of Peter Parker — as the actor we're most thankful for this year. Stone won the part of Gwen Stacy in October, capping a stellar year for the 22-year-old.

From the top-notch teenage rom-com "Easy A" to her "Saturday Night Live" hosting gig to the opportunity to shoot flicks opposite the likes of Steve Carell ("Crazy, Stupid, Love") and Justin Timberlake ("Friends With Benefits"), Stone was already having a great 2010. Then "Spider-Man" director Marc Webb came calling. Her life is never going to be the same — and she couldn't be more excited.

The always-energetic actress called up MTV News in the midst of "Spider-Man" preproduction to talk about what a surreal year it's been and how she's dealing with the pressures of taking on the iconic Marvel series.

MTV: Thanks for calling up to chat.

Emma Stone: Thank you for having me!

MTV: Well, you're going to be very excited in a second.

Stone: What is it? What's it going to be? You like how I'm excited at the mere mention that I'm going to be excited?

MTV: Uh-oh, I really have to come through now. Look out your window — there's a blimp with your face on it!

Stone: Oh my god, it's so beautiful, I'm looking right now! You wanna know what's really insane about that? I actually pulled back the curtain and looked at the sky.

MTV: I'm sorry to disappoint, but I can tell you that every year we honor various people we're thankful for, and this year you're the woman we're most thankful for.

Stone: Oh my god, shut up! Get out of here! I prepared a 10-minute speech, is that OK?

MTV: I'm afraid we don't have enough time. You know, the man we're most thankful for this year is your "Spider-Man" co-star Andrew Garfield.

Stone: Hey, I know that guy! We've met. He's the worst!

MTV: I won't tell him you said that. It has been quite a year for you. "Easy A" gets a great reaction, you're shooting movies with people like Justin Timberlake and Ryan Gosling, you host "Saturday Night Live," and then you land "Spider-Man." Does 2010 feel like a landmark year?

Stone: It feels kind of scary saying this because that means it's only downhill, but it's been the best year of my life. Not just with how lucky I've been work-wise, but with my family and friends. I'm totally terrified for 2011. I have such a disaster mentality, it's not even funny.

MTV: Which raises the question, are you ready for something as big as "Spider-Man"? Can you ever be ready for something like that?

Stone: The way I have to approach it, and I think Andrew would agree, is just like any other movie. You're going to put the same amount of focus into this that you would with anything. It just happens to be an exponentially bigger budget. So there's that. It'll probably feel different when we start to do press, but we won't have to deal with that for another year and a half. And there are harnesses I'm going to have to use in this one. That's the only difference: just the harnesses.

MTV: Seriously, though, it's been quite a year for you with onscreen love interests. The women in the office are jealous — Penn Badgley, Timberlake, Gosling, Garfield. You're a lucky woman ...

Stone: What can I say? You cannot compare them. They are so wonderful in their own ways. Again, it's been an amazing year.

MTV: Has there been one surreal point in particular that kind of encapsulates 2010 for you?

Stone: Hosting "Saturday Night Live." That's always been my ultimate dream. That moment before you come out those doors when Don Pardo says your name and you're standing there ... I had never let myself imagine what that would feel like. That moment when you walk through those doors was probably the most surreal moment, not just of this year, but ever.

MTV: So you guys are in rehearsals for "Spider-Man," right? What is that process like at this point?

Stone: Today I went and did hair tests, because I have blonde hair now since Gwen has blonde hair. My natural hair is blonde, so it's kind of nice. I looked in the mirror and said, "Oh my god, it's me again, it's been so long!" We're finalizing the visual stuff. And I think we'll start actually rehearsing, because we start shooting in two weeks. Andrew and I went and learned about science yesterday. Gwen really likes science, so we learned about science. I was homeschooled, so I never went to chemistry class in a traditional setting like Gwen is into. That was really beneficial.

MTV: There seemed to be so much competition for the role of Gwen Stacy. Do you ever think, "Why me?" What do you think won you the part?

Stone: I ask myself that question every day. I have no f---ing idea. It's the most amazing idea, I can't even tell you. I don't think I ever will figure out how it happened. It's been mind-blowing. I know things will eventually change, so I'm just trying to avoid thinking about it and just enjoy it while it's happening. Ugh, what am I even saying? Don't write any of that down!

Thanksgiving is a time for taking stock, expressing gratitude and, most importantly, overeating. We at MTV News have been gorging all year at movie theaters, so it's about time we looked back and gave thanks to our favorite actors and filmmakers of 2010. Enjoy exclusive interviews with our winners all week long.

Check out everything we've got on "Spider-Man."

Roadrunner Comedy represents the spirit in which Roadrunner Records was originally founded: highlighting brilliant artists that are inherently irreverent and provocative.  The ideals that have made Roadrunner a recognizable brand worldwide are the guidelines by which Roadrunner Comedy will develop.  30 years of representing the best of rock, metal and alternative music have shown that Roadrunner is adept at reaching fans on a widespread and meaningful level, a function Roadrunner seeks to replicate with the launch of Roadrunner Comedy.

Cees Wessels, CEO of Roadrunner Records, said, “We are very excited to launch Roadrunner Comedy, yet another innovative iteration of the Roadrunner brand.  We look forward to welcoming a variety of like-minded comedians to the Roadrunner family—new artists with dynamic talents—that will be making us laugh for years to come.”

Partnering with the talented Doug Stanhope to launch Roadrunner Comedy was an obvious move.  Stanhope’s brutally honest style is shockingly uninhibited, ranging from biting social commentary to the crass and obscene.  His cutting stand-up has landed him appearances on The Howard Stern Show, Comedy Central Presents, Premium Blend, The Man Show, Fox News with Greta Van Sustern, BBC’s Newswipe and The Jerry Springer Show.  Stanhope has taped TV specials for Showtime and UK’s Channel 4.  He was also featured in controversial film The Aristocrats alongside legends like George Carlin, Don Rickles and Chris Rock.  Keep an eye out for new material by Stanhope, slated for a 2011 Roadrunner Comedy debut.

Brian Hennigan, Doug Stanhope’s manager, said, “We needed to find a supportive partner who would let Doug Stanhope be Doug Stanhope. There are millions of people all over the world that Doug hasn't offended and with Roadrunner's help we should be able to reach them all.”
