MTV Began 30 Years Ago Today

It kicked off with footage from the original moon landing, the words, "Ladies and gentlemen...rock and roll..." and the first music video, The Buggles "Video Killed the Radio Star." On August 1, 1981, a new cable channel called MTV launched. MTV would go on to change the music industry making promotional video clips a key part of the music marketing process. During its heyday MTV helped break new wave to a mainstream audience, tear down color barriers for Michael Jackson and Prince, and prove that pop radio didn't have a monopoly on breaking hit songs and new artists. It is easy to look at today's MTV and lament that it really can no longer be considered "music television," but the massive cultural impact of the cable channel must be recognized by any serious observer of pop music over the last 30 years. Not only did MTV make itself into a powerhouse, but also its innovations pointed in new directions for a wide range of creative individuals associated with the music industry.
