Cults Revisit Jonestown For "Go Outside" Video

Considering the song kicks off with the quote from Jim Jones, "To me, death is not a fearful thing. It's living that's treacherous," and the name of the duo, it is no surprise that their video for the song "Go Outside" would incorporate elements of the tragic history of Jonestown and the People's Temple. However, the way in which it is done is fascinating and riveting. Cults, one of my artists to watch for 2011, connected with director Isaiah Seret to put together this clip. He says that he was inspired to bring Madeline Follin and Brian Oblivion, the pair that make up Cults, "inside the world" of the People's Temple. Indeed they are edited into home movie footage of the group that includes film looking like those in the archival clips are singing along to "Go Outside." Isaiah Seret told Paste magazine that he connected with Fielding M. McGehee III, the primary researcher for the Jonestown Archive, while looking into the feasibility of the video. Survivors of the Jonestown Massacre who previewed the video were pleased that it focuses on the lives of People's Temple members instead of graphic footage of their deaths.
