Roger Williams, Pop Star Pianist, Dies At Age 87

American Idol did not start the tradition of TV talent shows leading to recording contracts and the development of pop stars. A young Louis Weertz won as a solo pianist on the TV show Arthur Godfrey's Talent Scouts. The victory led to a recording contract with Kapp Records and a name change to Roger Williams. Soon he found himself with a #1 hit in 1955 playing "Autumn Leaves." That song remains the only solo piano instrumental to reach #1 on the pop chart in the US.
